Envision the impossible | Robert van der Wolk | TEDxNBU
-
0:14 - 0:18I'm not a gold-medal-winning
Olympic athlete, -
0:20 - 0:24nor am I a ground-breaking,
discovery-making scientist, -
0:25 - 0:26I'm also not
-
0:26 - 0:29a fortune-500-hundred-business billionaire,
-
0:29 - 0:31well, at least not yet;
-
0:33 - 0:35I'm just a very passionate guy
-
0:35 - 0:37with an extraordinary story
-
0:40 - 0:42and I'd like to tell you my story.
-
0:43 - 0:46My story begins when I was a small boy.
-
0:47 - 0:48I was a dreamer;
-
0:49 - 0:52I was with my head up high in the clouds,
-
0:52 - 0:55not connected with my feet to the ground,
-
0:55 - 0:56and I liked it there.
-
0:57 - 0:58I liked to dream,
-
0:59 - 1:05I liked to look at the impossible
and dream in a fantasy world. -
1:07 - 1:10And I liked it there until that one day
-
1:10 - 1:12in September of 1989.
-
1:14 - 1:16That time my doctor told me,
-
1:17 - 1:21"Robert, you have type 1 diabetes, this
is incurable and this means -
1:22 - 1:28taking insulin shots, living a life
of regularity, consistency, -
1:29 - 1:30and above everything -
-
1:31 - 1:33back to reality.
-
1:34 - 1:36So over the course of the next few years
-
1:37 - 1:41I had to face, this reality.
-
1:42 - 1:44I grew into my teenage years
and on high school, -
1:45 - 1:47like everybody else,
-
1:47 - 1:49I was a rebel - going against the grain
-
1:49 - 1:51and going my own way.
-
1:52 - 1:54But even high school...
-
1:55 - 1:56didn't make it for me.
-
1:56 - 1:59I dropped out of high school
and I started working, -
2:01 - 2:04and by the time I was nearly 21
-
2:05 - 2:06I wasn't satisfied,
-
2:07 - 2:10I wasn't fulfilled with my life
and I had no idea what to do. -
2:11 - 2:15On a Friday evening I went
with some friends to a party, -
2:16 - 2:17I had a drink or two,
-
2:17 - 2:19and I went back home.
-
2:19 - 2:22And on the Saturday morning
that I woke up, -
2:23 - 2:25I will never forget that day,
-
2:26 - 2:30in 2002, on August 16th,
-
2:31 - 2:33I opened up my eyes that morning
-
2:33 - 2:35and my world was black.
-
2:37 - 2:41By the time I realized what was happening
-
2:41 - 2:42panic struck
-
2:43 - 2:47and like a zombie I walked around,
-
2:48 - 2:52trying to find my way around the house
-
2:52 - 2:55that I was living in for over 22 years.
-
2:56 - 2:58And I found the refrigerator,
-
2:59 - 3:01which at that point was my life savior,
-
3:02 - 3:06and I made it through the Saturday,
-
3:06 - 3:07I couldn't find a phone,
-
3:07 - 3:10so I had to make it through
the Saturday and the Sunday, -
3:10 - 3:12and on Monday I finally found that phone,
-
3:13 - 3:15that life-important phone,
-
3:15 - 3:17and I called the hospital
-
3:17 - 3:22and by the time I was able to explain,
they told me, "Come by." -
3:24 - 3:27I asked a friend to drop me
to the hospital -
3:28 - 3:31and there they gave me the explanation,
-
3:31 - 3:34"Well, Robert, you have
proliferative diabetic retinopathy." -
3:35 - 3:42I said, "well... I'm a smart guy...
But I have no clue what that means." -
3:42 - 3:44And, basically, what they said is,
-
3:44 - 3:49"A very thin layer in the back
of your eye detached from your eye, -
3:49 - 3:51like a very thin layer,
-
3:51 - 3:53and this is the reason
why you don't see, -
3:53 - 3:56the reason why your world is black."
-
3:56 - 3:58"So what is there to do?", I asked,
-
3:58 - 4:00and they said, "We can operate you."
-
4:01 - 4:05Because I didn't finish my high school,
I wasn't secure about myself, -
4:06 - 4:07I followed them.
-
4:08 - 4:10And over the course of two years they did
-
4:10 - 4:12intensive procedures and operations on me
-
4:13 - 4:16and slowly but surely I gained
my eyesight back. -
4:18 - 4:20I could see a little bit more
-
4:22 - 4:25but every operation
and every procedure that I got, -
4:26 - 4:28I saw a little bit less.
-
4:28 - 4:34And so it was very hard for me
to live the life that I wanted, -
4:34 - 4:37let alone understand
the life that I wanted to live. -
4:38 - 4:41And so at one point after these two years
-
4:41 - 4:42I hit rock bottom.
-
4:42 - 4:44I became depressed.
-
4:45 - 4:48I made up the bill -
and the bill for me was: -
4:49 - 4:52I have no job, which means
I have no income, -
4:53 - 4:55I have no good health,
-
4:56 - 4:58I have no relationship, no money,
-
4:59 - 5:02I have no eyesight, so I have no future.
-
5:05 - 5:07What to do?
-
5:07 - 5:10By the time I realized what to do,
-
5:12 - 5:14I got to hear a quote by a friend of mine
-
5:15 - 5:17and he told me the following:
-
5:18 - 5:22He said, "People most change
when the pain of -
5:22 - 5:28remaining in the same situation becomes
greater than the fear of changing itself." -
5:29 - 5:31And for me that was absolutely true.
-
5:32 - 5:37I had to change because
being depressed - that was horrible. -
5:38 - 5:40Having no eyesight - that was even worse.
-
5:42 - 5:44So - what to do?
-
5:45 - 5:48And by accident or coincidence,
if you believe in that, -
5:49 - 5:53I stumbled upon a course
on personal development -
5:54 - 5:56and I followed that course.
-
5:58 - 6:01It actually made me feel
a little bit better -
6:01 - 6:04so I thought, OK, let's go
to the next one, and the next one, -
6:05 - 6:09and over the course of two years
and some months, -
6:10 - 6:14I went to several personal
development courses and trainings, -
6:14 - 6:17I got my Bachelor's and my Master's
-
6:18 - 6:21in a science called
"neurolinguistic programming" -
6:21 - 6:24and I learned how to deal
with the lack of eyesight, -
6:25 - 6:27I learned to overcome my depression,
-
6:27 - 6:32and I started to learn how
to envision my life again. -
6:34 - 6:37So... "What is there to do?", I thought.
-
6:38 - 6:41Even though I don't have
a high school diploma, -
6:42 - 6:45I still wanted to go further,
I still wanted to study, -
6:45 - 6:48I still wanted to explore the impossible.
-
6:49 - 6:50And so I did a study.
-
6:52 - 6:55I did a study called
Human Resources Management. -
6:56 - 6:58And I thought, "This is nice,
because for me -
6:58 - 7:02it allows me to do the human part
-
7:02 - 7:03but also the business part,
-
7:04 - 7:09and it allows me to explore
what is there for me within my potential." -
7:11 - 7:14And I did that course in four years -
-
7:15 - 7:17from 2005 to 2009,
-
7:17 - 7:18it went great.
-
7:18 - 7:22I got a lot of support from the people
that were willing to help me out -
7:22 - 7:25and to give me a chance,
-
7:25 - 7:27a chance to discover my potential,
-
7:28 - 7:30to awaken the possibilities and to see
-
7:31 - 7:33how much further I could stretch
my comfort zone. -
7:36 - 7:39This was very nice and I loved it
-
7:40 - 7:42but there was one problem -
-
7:43 - 7:45even though I was lacking the eyesight,
-
7:46 - 7:50the core cause of it all, my diabetes,
was still there. -
7:51 - 7:54And so at one point my doctor told me,
-
7:56 - 8:00"Robert, also your kidneys are failing
-
8:01 - 8:06and within a few months
you'll have to face kidney dialysis." -
8:07 - 8:10And for me understanding what that meant -
-
8:10 - 8:14being stuck on a machine 3 times a week,
for 4 hours every time - -
8:16 - 8:17it meant lack of freedom.
-
8:19 - 8:22And I learned throughout
the past years before -
8:23 - 8:25the following formula.
-
8:26 - 8:29And this formula I hold still true today.
-
8:30 - 8:33You may wonder, "What does this mean?" -
E + R = O, -
8:34 - 8:35well let me tell you.
-
8:35 - 8:40It stands for, "the Event +
your Response to it = your Outcome." -
8:42 - 8:44Even though I was facing kidney dialysis
-
8:45 - 8:51I still wanted to... investigate,
explore and experience -
8:51 - 8:53what is there for me to do.
-
8:54 - 8:55I knew it was inevitable,
-
8:56 - 8:58I knew I had to face it at one time
-
8:59 - 9:01but there was still
a little bit of time, -
9:01 - 9:02just a few months,
-
9:04 - 9:06and having the lack of freedom,
-
9:06 - 9:09which I connected to kidney dialysis,
-
9:10 - 9:13I chose to do the opposite
and to live the ultimate freedom. -
9:14 - 9:17And for me the ultimate freedom was
walking a pilgrimage called -
9:17 - 9:19Santiago de Compostella.
-
9:19 - 9:21And for those of you who know,
-
9:21 - 9:25Santiago is a pilgrimage
of 600 miles or 1,000 km -
9:26 - 9:27and it's heavy.
-
9:28 - 9:30I didn't practice because
I didn't have the time. -
9:30 - 9:32So I took my backpack, 25 kg,
-
9:33 - 9:34stuffed it with everything in,
-
9:35 - 9:37nothing of importance, even my laptop,
-
9:39 - 9:41and I just started walking.
-
9:41 - 9:43From the southern part of France
-
9:43 - 9:47up to the month Pyrenees,
over the Pyrenees, into Spain. -
9:48 - 9:50And on the first day, I remember it
very well, -
9:51 - 9:56I just walked 1% of this 800-km,
at that point, journey -
9:58 - 10:02and I thought, "If this is gonna last
for another 99%, I would be sure -
10:02 - 10:04that I would not make it."
-
10:05 - 10:07But I asked myself a critical question:
-
10:08 - 10:09"Why am I doing this?
-
10:11 - 10:14What is my motivation
for walking this pilgrimage?" -
10:15 - 10:17And I connected it to
this feeling of freedom, -
10:17 - 10:19this ultimate freedom
that I wanted to live. -
10:20 - 10:24And so it gave me the motivation,
it gave me the power -
10:25 - 10:27to face this impossible journey.
-
10:28 - 10:30And over the following 6 weeks
-
10:31 - 10:34I walked that 600-mile,
or 1,000-kilometre pilgrimage. -
10:35 - 10:39And along its way I wrote a book about it.
-
10:40 - 10:42Upon coming home
-
10:43 - 10:45I had to face this kidney dialysis
-
10:46 - 10:49but... something within me changed
-
10:50 - 10:54and... what changed was the following:
-
10:54 - 11:01that even though circumstances
may seem to determine your outcome, -
11:02 - 11:04it's your belief that is most important.
-
11:04 - 11:09So whether you think you can or you think
you cannot, you're always right. -
11:10 - 11:12And so I faced kidney dialysis.
-
11:12 - 11:16In that same year of 2010 when
I was dealing with kidney dialysis -
11:16 - 11:19I started my own company,
-
11:19 - 11:22I graduated from two studies,
among which one university study, -
11:23 - 11:25I wrote and published my book,
-
11:26 - 11:30just to name a couple of examples of
reaching the goals that I wanted to have, -
11:31 - 11:34and I knew that there was
much more within me. -
11:37 - 11:41I wanted to set a new goal,
and this goal was -
11:41 - 11:45even more impossible,
even bigger than the previous one. -
11:46 - 11:49So in 2010, while I was
still on kidney dialysis, -
11:49 - 11:52I thought, "What is also impossible
for me to do?" -
11:54 - 11:55And I figured it:
-
11:55 - 11:57Let's run a marathon!
-
11:58 - 12:01And not just some marathon,
no, let's run The Marathon: -
12:02 - 12:03New York.
-
12:04 - 12:06So I practiced.
-
12:07 - 12:11But unfortunately, in that same year,
I was too late in subscribing. -
12:11 - 12:13This was my attempt number 1.
-
12:14 - 12:16Two years later I wanted to do it again.
-
12:17 - 12:22In 2012 I practiced a lot
and I really went for it, -
12:23 - 12:24with all the passion and motivation,
-
12:24 - 12:27and all the enthusiasm,
and the belief that I could do it, -
12:28 - 12:30I wanted to make it happen.
-
12:31 - 12:33Until I got a phone call
from my doctor again. -
12:34 - 12:36And my doctor this time
called me up and said, -
12:36 - 12:38"Well Robert, how are you doing?"
-
12:38 - 12:42I said, "I'm doing great! I'm feeling
wonderful, even though dialysis, -
12:42 - 12:46even though diabetes, even though the lack
of eyesight, I'm doing great!" -
12:47 - 12:51He said, "Wonderful! Now how would you
like to have 2 new organs?" -
12:51 - 12:55And I thought "Wow...
I didn't see that one coming." -
12:55 - 12:59and for a short time I made up the balance
-
13:00 - 13:04marathon... double organ
transplants... marathon... -
13:05 - 13:08and of course I made the wisest decision,
-
13:08 - 13:10I went for that double organ transplant.
-
13:11 - 13:13And I can tell you it was heavy,
it was very heavy. -
13:13 - 13:16It took me over a year to recuperate.
-
13:17 - 13:21But I always kept that formula
in the back of my head. -
13:22 - 13:24The event does not determine your outcome,
-
13:24 - 13:27it's always how you respond to the event.
-
13:28 - 13:33So, in 2013, I recuperated
-
13:33 - 13:38and I slowly but surely started
to practice and train a little bit more. -
13:38 - 13:41And with the belief that I could do it
-
13:43 - 13:46I planned my journey to do the marathon.
-
13:47 - 13:48When 2014 came,
-
13:49 - 13:51this was my 3rd attempt now,
-
13:51 - 13:54I thought to myself, "OK,
now it has to be done. -
13:55 - 13:57Now I have to surely make it."
-
13:58 - 14:01And so, I subscribed.
-
14:01 - 14:04I got in, I got accepted.
-
14:04 - 14:09And on the coldest day ever recorded
in that year in New York, -
14:10 - 14:12with a temperature that felt like -5
-
14:13 - 14:16and an arctic wind breezing down my spine
-
14:18 - 14:20I ran that marathon.
-
14:20 - 14:22And I finished it.
-
14:23 - 14:26And when I finished it,
even though there were only 2 thoughts -
14:26 - 14:28running through my head -
-
14:28 - 14:301. I want something warm,
-
14:30 - 14:322. I just want to have a bath,
-
14:33 - 14:35there was a 3rd thought running
through my head, -
14:35 - 14:37"Yes, I did it!"
-
14:38 - 14:40You can do anything
that you put your mind into. -
14:44 - 14:47I'll leave you with a last quote
-
14:48 - 14:52and before I do that, I just want to say
-
14:53 - 14:55that even though
my eyesight is getting dimmer, -
14:56 - 14:59my vision upon life
has never been greater. -
15:01 - 15:05So envisioning the impossible and
awakening the possibilities, -
15:07 - 15:09it allows you to do anything.
-
15:10 - 15:12And in my opinion
-
15:13 - 15:19one of the most famous and
greatest boxers of all time, once said: -
15:20 - 15:23"Impossible is just a big word
thrown around by small men -
15:27 - 15:34who'd rather live in a world they've been
given, than to explore the power -
15:35 - 15:37they have to change it.
-
15:38 - 15:41Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion.
-
15:42 - 15:46Impossible is not a declaration,
it's a dare. -
15:47 - 15:49Impossible is potential.
-
15:49 - 15:52Impossible is temporary, and, above all,
-
15:52 - 15:54impossible - it's nothing."
-
15:56 - 16:02So whether you want to be
a gold-medal-winning Olympic athlete, -
16:05 - 16:09a ground-breaking,
discovery-making scientist, -
16:11 - 16:13or a fortune-500-business billionaire,
-
16:13 - 16:15or anything else in your life,
-
16:16 - 16:20you hold the power within that
to determine your own reality, -
16:21 - 16:24to envision the impossible
and to make it come true. -
16:25 - 16:27Thank you very much.
