Cairo protest part of the Global Day against Sexual Assaults on Women in Egypt
  • 0:05 - 0:09
Also in response to the Egyptian Upper House (Shura Council) Statements
  • 0:09 - 0:12
Called for by "Uprising of Women in the Arab World"
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    February 12, 2013
  • 0:23 - 0:27
"Safe Square for All, Against Harassment"
  • 0:29 - 0:35
"Harassment won´t do you any good, try again and we´ll break your arm"
  • 0:35 - 0:38
"patience has its limits" (also title of the song playing)
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    "don´t touch me"
  • 0:41 - 0:47
I´m here today because I´m an Egyptian citizen, with a right to walk down the street peacefully and safely,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    like any man or woman.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
What is happening against us is clearly systematic and in order to drive us away from the streets.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
We won´t be driven away. The street is ours.
  • 0:56 - 1:05
This is a global protest against harassment, especially against women in Tahrir Square.
  • 1:05 - 1:12
It is a known premeditated plot to scare women off, and scare those who are new to the revolution.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
We say that we will continue to take to the streets, & won´t be scared away.
  • 1:16 - 1:24
We will face all the attempts to defame Tahrir or to scare the women away.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
You won´t stop us from continuing our revolution,
  • 1:27 - 1:32
we won´t get scared, our voice is not shameful, and our bodies are not cheap.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
We will take to the streets, and protect ourselves well.
  • 1:35 - 1:44
Harassment won´t do you any good, try again and we´ll break your arm.
  • 1:44 - 1:51
Try again and we will break your arm.
  • 1:51 - 2:08
A courageous woman in the Square, and the harasser is a coward dog.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
"Egypt´s Women are a Red Line"
  • 2:10 - 2:20
A woman´s voice is a revolution, Afifi´s presence in the Shura Council is the indecency!
  • 2:20 - 2:29
Egypt´s women are a red line!
  • 2:29 - 2:38
I´m here to say that harassment is not as superficial as they try to portray it.
  • 2:38 - 2:49
That it is just a man rubbing against a woman because streets are crowded, or sexually deprived thugs.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
Harassment has to do with the social norms.
  • 2:53 - 2:58
I´m here because we are citizens, the country and the streets are ours.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
No one will force us to stay home.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
We will wear whatever we want & go wherever we want. The street is ours!
  • 3:04 - 3:07
I´ve been taking part in the revolution since day one.
  • 3:07 - 3:13
Now I´m here with my child & my daughter to affirm that women will be here till the end.
  • 3:13 - 3:18
Egyptian woman, hold your head high!
  • 3:18 - 3:23
You are more dignified than those who stepped on you!
  • 3:23 - 3:34
I´m here to send various messages, first to the Egyptian people.
  • 3:34 - 3:47
I tell them, rest assured for your revolutionary and honored women are safeguarded and dignified.
  • 3:47 - 3:53
The second message is to the Islamists, I tell them,
  • 3:53 - 4:04
respect yourselves and know your limits for you will not manage to disrespect the Egyptian woman specifically.
  • 4:04 - 4:12
I also tell them that women are an integral part of the Egyptian revolution.
  • 4:12 - 4:20
Through these systematic conspiracies, they want to push the women away from the revolution.
  • 4:20 - 4:25
I tell them, shame on you, in your dreams! It won´t happen!
  • 4:25 - 4:31
The women are here to stay and till we attain victory for the revolution, in God´s will.
  • 4:31 - 4:40
Shura Council, Council of disgrace! We will set you on fire.
  • 4:40 - 4:56
I won´t be insulted, yes I will go to the Square.
  • 4:56 - 5:12
The women said it loudly, the council has no legitimacy.
  • 5:12 - 5:22
Bread, Freedom, dignity for the Egyptian (women)
  • 5:22 - 5:25
Here I respond to the Shura Council,
  • 5:25 - 5:32
I ask them, you Shura people, what took you there?
  • 5:32 - 5:41
SCAF said this before, and we rejected it and protested against it. Women will continue to participate.
  • 5:41 - 5:48
Like they have the right to live, we have this right too. Like they have an opinion, we have an opinion too.
  • 5:48 - 5:54
I respond to them with this beautiful chant "Shura Council of disgrace, women are free"
  • 5:54 - 5:57
This is all I have for them, it is a council of disgrace.
  • 5:57 - 6:04
I´m here to tell the Shura Council people that your statements are despicable, and don´t even deserve a response.
  • 6:04 - 6:11
I don´t know who you represent, because you do not represent the people of Egypt nor Islam.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    Honestly, I spit on you!
  • 6:13 - 6:27
    Freedom, Freedom
  • 6:27 - 6:31
To the women at home I say, you should take to the streets,
  • 6:31 - 6:38
some are trying to keep us at home without a voice.
  • 6:38 - 6:44
It is the time to impose our presence. It is a key moment.
  • 6:44 - 6:49
Come out on the streets & defend your rights, it is very important.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
To the women who are afraid of taking to the streets, that I´m scared to.
  • 6:53 - 6:58
I´ve been scared for a long time, not just of demonstrations, of the street itself.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
I´m always very cautious on the street.
  • 7:02 - 7:09
They say it only happens in downtown or at protests, or just in Tahrir.
  • 7:09 - 7:15
There is a problem everywhere, including the posh neighborhoods... Maadi area, Zamalek.
  • 7:15 - 7:24
We have verbal harassment, and also touching, to all kinds of women including those veiled.
  • 7:24 - 7:29
We have to be strong everywhere! Every day we are on the streets we face this problem.
  • 7:29 - 7:34
Whether we are in a taxi, on the metro, driving or walking.
  • 7:34 - 7:39
We´ve had this problem for a long time, the minute you leave your doorstep, you will get harassed.
  • 7:39 - 7:47
Scare me all you want, you won´t be able to banish me.
  • 7:47 - 7:58
The voice of a woman is a revolution.
  • 7:58 - 8:08
Raise your voice, tomorrow your voice will topple them all.
  • 8:08 - 8:17
To the women at home, I know and understand that they might be scared. I understand that.
  • 8:17 - 8:22
Yet, we all should do whatever we can. Those who dare take to the streets should do so.
  • 8:22 - 8:26
It is for her, for her sister, for her daughter, and also for the the men.
  • 8:26 - 8:30
They do this to men and women alike.
  • 8:30 - 8:33
So, take to the streets, and gather your courage.
  • 8:33 - 8:39
If you can´t then do something from where you are. But be positive and defend your rights.
  • 8:39 - 8:43
This is not just about walking on the streets, this is your right to live.
