0:03 - 0:09I'm Chief Sustainability Officer from Max Hamburger
Restaurants, a fast food chain from Sweden. -
0:09 - 0:15In 2002, the two sons of the founders,
Richard and Christopher, -
0:15 - 0:17became in charge of the company.
-
0:17 - 0:21The first thing they did was
to travel in the US together with their father -
0:21 - 0:24and I think they had more than 800 burgers
-
0:24 - 0:26during a period of four weeks.
-
0:26 - 0:32Coming home from the US they,
of course, saw not just the good taste -
0:32 - 0:36but also the long-term consequences
of consuming fast food. -
0:36 - 0:40Therefore, in 2003 we launched our Delifresh menu,
-
0:40 - 0:42that means that we are trying to serve burgers
-
0:42 - 0:48based on low fat, low sugar, less salt
and, of course, fibre-rich breads. -
0:54 - 0:57There are many things we do
in our road to sustainability. -
0:57 - 1:02Another example is, of course,
the way that we are hiring people with disabilities. -
1:02 - 1:04What we are doing is that we are trying to focus
-
1:04 - 1:06not on the people with disabilities,
-
1:06 - 1:09on the other hand, we focus on our managers
-
1:09 - 1:13and try to take away the prejudices by teaching them
-
1:13 - 1:17about the people with disabilities
and how to train them. -
1:17 - 1:20The result of the cause today is that our programme
-
1:20 - 1:23has been highlighted by the European Union
-
1:23 - 1:26and, of course, here are also some pictures
-
1:26 - 1:30where the present Minister of Employment
meets some of the employees. -
1:30 - 1:34In late 2006, Mr Richard Bergfors was concerned,
-
1:34 - 1:39he had seen Al Gore's movie "An Unconvenient truth"
more than sixteen times. -
1:39 - 1:45So, therefore, he came
to the top management team with a question: -
1:45 - 1:50how is the situation in our company?
What is our impact to the climate? -
1:50 - 1:53The result of this was depressing in some ways,
-
1:53 - 1:57meaning that the beef, our prime product,
-
1:57 - 2:01is more than 70% of our total emissions.
-
2:01 - 2:05And with that result on hand,
we decided to call to action. -
2:05 - 2:09(Slide: Putting the carbon on the menu)

2:09 - 2:13(Slide: We offset everything we emit
by planting trees in Africa.) -
2:13 - 2:18Other reaction is, of course, our new
environmental-friendly restaurants, -
2:18 - 2:22that are really focusing on
reduced consumption of energy -
2:22 - 2:28but also the way how the whole restaurant
is environmental deductible. -
2:28 - 2:30Running a fast food company just in Sweden,
-
2:30 - 2:34even if we have the ambition of opening up
new restaurants outside Sweden, -
2:34 - 2:39I'm still amazed over the big recognition
that our programme has had. -
2:39 - 2:41Sir Paul McCartney: In Sweden now
-
2:41 - 2:43they've started to label food
-
2:43 - 2:47to show the costumers
the environmental damage rating, -
2:47 - 2:50so it's giving the people a choice.

2:50 - 2:55You're told that, you know, this burger is going to
-
2:55 - 2:59damage the atmosphere
to the equivalent of this and, so, -
2:59 - 3:03at least the customers then
can look at the goods and say -
3:03 - 3:05well, maybe I don't want to buy them.
-
3:05 - 3:09So it gives them the chance
to buy sensibly and responsibly. -
3:09 - 3:13Pär Larshans: And I can assure you,
Max as a company will continue -
3:13 - 3:16to make efforts to reduce our emissions
-
3:16 - 3:19and inspire others to do the same thing.

Pär has been working at Max for more than 25 years. He is used to deal with such themes as leadership, sustainability or human rights, especially the rights of disabled people. He combines his work at MAX with lectures on behalf of the Swedish foreign ministry, where he works with leaders from China, Russia, India and many other countries on sustainable leadership in business. - Video Language:
