at TechnologyEvangelist.com. -
0:03 - 0:06With me I've got Nicholas once again,
from the Participatory Culture Foundation. -
0:07 - 0:09Those are the guys who make Democracy Player
-
0:09 - 0:11Nicholas, welcome!
>> Hey, how are you? -
0:11 - 0:15>> Doing great, how about yourself?
>> .... thanks. -
0:15 - 0:20>> So you guys are on the cusp of
releasing Democracy Player 0.9.5 -
0:20 - 0:22This kind of rolls right off the tongue.
-
0:22 - 0:24Tell us a little bit
about this new release. -
0:25 - 0:27>> Yep this is a big update for us
-
0:27 - 0:32and it's the biggest update
that you'll see before our 1.0 comes out. -
0:32 - 0:37We have a lot of important stuff in here
a lot of it is behind the scenes -
0:37 - 0:40but some of this up you'll notice ///
is a redesigned interface -
0:40 - 0:43It's smoother and solider /// and slicker-
-
0:45 - 0:47We have some nice things, like,
-
0:47 - 0:50for mac users it'll generate thumbnails
automatically, -
0:51 - 0:55if you want to download a video
you don't have that yet for 10 minutes /// -
0:55 - 0:57And that's something that we're
definitely working on, -
0:57 - 1:00there's proxy support
that are a bit torrent support -
1:01 - 1:05better -- it does a better job resuming
if something gets interrupted, -
1:06 - 1:10and all knowledge .... ///
a smoother and cleaner experience -
1:11 - 1:13and it's a big step toward the 1.0.
-
1:14 - 1:18>> You know, one thing I noticed is that
as each build keeps getting released -
1:18 - 1:21the system seems to use less and less RAM
and get faster and faster and faster -
1:22 - 1:24in its ability to just playback files
and download files, -
1:24 - 1:28because I remember working with a beta,
I think like .8 or something like that -
1:28 - 1:31and it was a pretty big RAM hog.
-
1:31 - 1:34How are you coming on the optimization
of democracy at this point? -
1:36 - 1:38>> That's definitely a big focus for us,
and as you know, -
1:39 - 1:41in the past two versions we've done a lot
to reduce the .... ///, -
1:41 - 1:47improve the speed and that's going to be
something that we continue to work on -
1:47 - 1:51which it's not clear right now whether
we'll be doing some big changes -
1:51 - 1:55before or after 1.0 but you know,
over the next six months, -
1:55 - 1:58we're going to continue to see
much better performance -
1:58 - 2:02of using less resources,
feeling faster and more responsive. -
2:02 - 2:04So we definitely see that as important.
-
2:05 - 2:07>> Now you mentioned that
this is one of the -- at least I believe -
2:07 - 2:10you mentioned this is
one of the final releases before 1.0 -
2:10 - 2:12or at least it's very close
to your road to 1.0. -
2:12 - 2:16What do we have left to get to 1.0,
what can we expect in 1.0? -
2:18 - 2:25>> Yeah the big thing that you expect
-- you will see in 1.0s is stability -
2:25 - 2:27and we're going to be doing
a lot of bug fixing -
2:27 - 2:31trying to nail down some of
the last final bugs -
2:31 - 2:33that we haven't been able to fix so far.
-
2:33 - 2:35the biggest challenge //////
-
2:35 - 2:39is just being able to reproduce
the ////// system -
2:39 - 2:41where we can see it happen
-
2:41 - 2:44because there's so many different kinds
of setups out there -
2:44 - 2:47that above not only happen you
a specific circumstances -
2:47 - 2:49and that makes it hard for us
to track it down and fix it. -
2:49 - 2:52Once we see it happening, you know,
we can always fix it -
2:53 - 2:57and so, stability clicking about is definitely
the biggest priority. -
2:58 - 3:01There's also just, you know,
a few finishing touches. -
3:01 - 3:05We want to make it easier for people that use
remote controls, komatsu //// player -
3:05 - 3:07something like that,
to have a few more ways -
3:07 - 3:10that people can customize and interact
-
3:10 - 3:14with it so it's sort of it's also going
-
3:14 - 3:15to be clean up around the edges but I
-
3:15 - 3:17think it will feel like more complete
-
3:17 - 3:19experience one of the biggest things
-
3:19 - 3:21that's about to happen we're going to be
-
3:21 - 3:23renaming democracy player and we've
-
3:23 - 3:25found that a lot of people get confused
-
3:25 - 3:30by the name and they when they first
-
3:30 - 3:31hear about it they think that it only
-
3:31 - 3:34has content related to politic on which
-
3:34 - 3:37is definitely not occasion that what we
-
3:37 - 3:39intend to rip Anene so we feel like it's
-
3:39 - 3:42important for us to find in your name we
-
3:42 - 3:45have one that we think is going to work
-
3:45 - 3:46or just you know going through some
-
3:46 - 3:49legal stuff and we're also getting a new
-
3:49 - 3:51icons and website design so as part of
-
3:51 - 3:54that one when I process we're going to
-
3:54 - 3:58be launching a new name new new style
-
3:58 - 4:01that's like their am asking you bid to
-
4:01 - 4:03the final thing and what I think right
-
4:03 - 4:06now is probably the weakest part of the
-
4:06 - 4:08democracy flight experience is the
-
4:08 - 4:10channel that you're rewriting that from
-
4:10 - 4:13scratch the version you see now is based
-
4:13 - 4:15on distance offers us out there it
-
4:15 - 4:17doesn't exactly fit on what we're doing
-
4:17 - 4:19is starting over from scratch making it
-
4:19 - 4:23very fast very responsive and once we
-
4:23 - 4:25have a good foundation
-
4:25 - 4:28built we're going to be a lot of work to
-
4:28 - 4:31add that a rating systems find more ways
-
4:31 - 4:34to turn off the best content as we've
-
4:34 - 4:36seen the talent that you know reach
-
4:36 - 4:38nearly a thousand different channels
-
4:38 - 4:41becomes more and more important find
-
4:41 - 4:43amazing filtering up the best stuff so
-
4:43 - 4:44want to make it easier for people to
-
4:44 - 4:47share channels great channels and see
-
4:47 - 4:49what people really liked and these are
-
4:49 - 4:51not a subscriber stuff that looks
-
4:51 - 4:55exactly when the service it feels like a
-
4:55 - 4:57next natural extension for democracy
-
4:57 - 4:59player is going to get PMP supports such
-
4:59 - 5:01as the PlayStation Portable the video
-
5:01 - 5:03iPod or other small portable video
-
5:03 - 5:05players and I know that that's not
-
5:05 - 5:07currently a feature of democracy player
-
5:07 - 5:08at least the ability to take the videos
-
5:08 - 5:10that I've downloaded and push it to
-
5:10 - 5:13these other devices mainly because it's
-
5:13 - 5:14extremely complex i mean the video ipod
-
5:14 - 5:16is going to take a totally different
-
5:16 - 5:18video format than the PSP which is going
-
5:18 - 5:19to take a totally different video format
-
5:19 - 5:22then a place for sure when is a mobile
-
5:22 - 5:24device now is that on your road map to
-
5:24 - 5:25actually add and is that going to be a
-
5:25 - 5:28one point 0 feature or later and you
-
5:28 - 5:30know how are you going to deal with that
-
5:30 - 5:32thinking the portable devices like the
-
5:32 - 5:34iPad or PSP something that we definitely
-
5:34 - 5:37and it's not going to happen for long
-
5:37 - 5:41point out we feel like our mission from
-
5:41 - 5:44one point hours to make a solid and
-
5:44 - 5:47excellent desktop you can we use every
-
5:47 - 5:50day and really rely upon that's that's
-
5:50 - 5:51what we wanted to go home when they'll
-
5:51 - 5:54get a good foundation in touch from
-
5:54 - 5:56there we'd like to see democracy player
-
5:56 - 5:59you know be able to get as content out
-
5:59 - 6:01more different devices getting onto your
-
6:01 - 6:03TV more usually onto any portable
-
6:03 - 6:07devices that you're using and so we're
-
6:07 - 6:08going to start tapping it make some in
-
6:08 - 6:12stages and in may and may mean that we
-
6:12 - 6:13start with the ability to sync to the
-
6:13 - 6:16most popular devices to sync file
-
6:16 - 6:18formats that they already play then
-
6:18 - 6:20later on we add the ability to transcode
-
6:20 - 6:24one format into another format and so
-
6:24 - 6:26that you know more of your videos are
-
6:26 - 6:29able to play on your ipod version but
-
6:29 - 6:32that's you know that's definitely coming
-
6:32 - 6:34Nicholas last time we talked we actually
-
6:34 - 6:37went to you and we we talked at that
-
6:37 - 6:39time itunes was one version lower
-
6:39 - 6:40really didn't have very good video
-
6:40 - 6:43support since then itunes has added a
-
6:43 - 6:45whole new video catalog you've got shows
-
6:45 - 6:48downloads of episodes of television
-
6:48 - 6:51shows and movies and whatnot and they've
-
6:51 - 6:53changed the way they deal with video how
-
6:53 - 6:56does that compete with the moxy does it
-
6:56 - 6:58compete with democracy and why are you
-
6:58 - 6:59different or why are you better than
-
6:59 - 7:03itunes in that front yeah I can't judge
-
7:03 - 7:05made some improvements to their video
-
7:05 - 7:07software but you know the focus that
-
7:07 - 7:10they have is really on accumulating a
-
7:10 - 7:14collection of videos for example movies
-
7:14 - 7:15that you buy out the store or music
-
7:15 - 7:18videos we both restore accumulating sort
-
7:18 - 7:21of a certain kind of collection and our
-
7:21 - 7:23focus is more on the flow of the
-
7:23 - 7:25internet the flow videos that is
-
7:25 - 7:27becoming more and more part of people's
-
7:27 - 7:30online experience and I think you know
-
7:30 - 7:32we're really offering an experience that
-
7:32 - 7:35that's very different to those way
-
7:35 - 7:38beyond the approach that itunes think so
-
7:38 - 7:40you know the channel model that we have
-
7:40 - 7:43really let you handle watch the videos
-
7:43 - 7:47coming in you know seeing seeing what's
-
7:47 - 7:50on a variety of channels organizing them
-
7:50 - 7:53in different ways and I think you know
-
7:53 - 7:54we still have them beads in terms of
-
7:54 - 7:57video experience you know from a
-
7:57 - 7:59publisher standpoint I think the big
-
7:59 - 8:00differentiator between democracy and
-
8:00 - 8:03itunes is torrent support I can directly
-
8:03 - 8:06download a torrent video file and as I'm
-
8:06 - 8:08publishing my high-definition 1080p
-
8:08 - 8:11videos which we do the bandwidth has
-
8:11 - 8:13taken off of me and so now I no longer
-
8:13 - 8:15have to pay for the full distribution of
-
8:15 - 8:16the file maybe a little bit now and I
-
8:16 - 8:18think that's really one of the big
-
8:18 - 8:21powerful features of democracy and you
-
8:21 - 8:22know you guys get kudos for that for
-
8:22 - 8:24having that from the beginning I mean
-
8:24 - 8:25that's that's really what makes you guys
-
8:25 - 8:26different and stand out from the rest of
-
8:26 - 8:29crowd yeah i think that the BitTorrent
-
8:29 - 8:32support that we have is definitely
-
8:32 - 8:34something that you know I to you know
-
8:34 - 8:37can't compete with and we also have a
-
8:37 - 8:39lot more flexibility on video form you
-
8:39 - 8:41know both on mac and windows now where
-
8:41 - 8:44is the play flash video files which is
-
8:44 - 8:46the most popular ominous video files are
-
8:46 - 8:49a lot bigger variety of
-
8:49 - 8:51then you could call you itunes and
-
8:51 - 8:55Windows Media Player or anything else is
-
8:55 - 8:57out there that has would be a video
-
8:57 - 9:00organizers will do down well Nicholas
-
9:00 - 9:02it's a great product and we always enjoy
-
9:02 - 9:04chatting with you and I hope you'll come
-
9:04 - 9:05back soon when you release version 1
-
9:05 - 9:07point 0 whatever it will be called at
-
9:07 - 9:09that point thank you so much that you
-
9:09 - 9:18have a great day I believe you come back
