0:03 - 0:06With me, I've got Nicholas once again,
from a Participatory Culture Foundation. -
0:07 - 0:09Those are the guys who make
"Democracy Player". -
0:09 - 0:11-Nicholas, welcome!
-Hi, how are ya? -
0:11 - 0:13Doing great, how about yourself?
-
0:13 - 0:15Amazing, thanks.
-
0:15 - 0:20So, you guys are on the cusp of
releasing Democracy Player 0.9.5, -
0:20 - 0:22it just kinda rolls right off the tongue.
-
0:22 - 0:24Tell us a bit about this new release.
-
0:26 - 0:27Yeah, this is a big update for us,
-
0:28 - 0:32it's the biggest update you'll see before
our 1.0 comes out. -
0:33 - 0:37We have a lot of important stuff in here,
a lot of it's behind the scenes, -
0:37 - 0:40but some of the stuff you'll notice
is a redesigned interface, -
0:40 - 0:43it's smoother and simpler and slicker.
-
0:45 - 0:48We have some nice things like
the MAC users, -
0:48 - 0:50it will generate thumbnails automatically.
-
0:51 - 0:55If you want to download a video and
don't have that yet for Windows or Linux, -
0:55 - 0:57that's something that
we're definitely working on. -
0:57 - 1:00There's proxy support,
better BitTorrent support. -
1:01 - 1:05It does a better job resuming downloads
if something gets interrupted. -
1:06 - 1:10And all in all, I just think it's a
smoother and cleaner experience, -
1:11 - 1:13and it's a big step towards
the update coming out. -
1:14 - 1:18You know, one thing I noticed is that as
each build keeps getting released, -
1:18 - 1:22the system seems to use less and less
RAM, and get faster and faster and faster -
1:22 - 1:25in its ability to playback files
and download files. -
1:25 - 1:29'Cause I remember working with the beta,
I think it was 0.8 or something like that, -
1:29 - 1:31and it was a pretty big RAM hog.
-
1:31 - 1:35How are you coming on with the
optimisation of Democracy at this point? -
1:36 - 1:40That's definitely a big focus for us as
you know with the past few versions -
1:40 - 1:45we've done a lot to reduce the number use,
improve the speed and that's -
1:45 - 1:47going to be something
that we continue to work on. -
1:47 - 1:51It's not clear right now whether we will
be doing some big changes before -
1:51 - 1:56or after 1.0, but, you know, over the next
6 months we're going to continue to see -
1:56 - 2:01much better performance, but using less
resources, feeling faster more responsive. -
2:02 - 2:04So, we have to see that as important.
-
2:05 - 2:09You mentioned that this is one, at least
I believe you mentioned, that this is -
2:09 - 2:12one of the final releases before 1.0,
or at least close to your road to 1.0. -
2:13 - 2:16What do we have left to get to 1.0?
What can we expect in 1.0? -
2:20 - 2:27The big thing that you'll see in 1.0 is
stability and we'll be doing a lot of -
2:27 - 2:32bug fixing, trying to nail down some of
the last final bugs that we haven't been -
2:32 - 2:37able to fix so far. The biggest challenge
on our end for that is just being able to -
2:37 - 2:42reproduce the bugs; finding a system
where we can see it happen because there -
2:42 - 2:46are so many different kinds of setups out
there that a bug may only happen in -
2:46 - 2:49those specific circumstances, and that
makes it hard for us to track it down -
2:49 - 2:54and fix it. Once we see it happening, you
know, we can always fix it, and so -
2:54 - 2:57stability, fixing bugs is definitely the
biggest priority. -
2:58 - 3:02There's also just a few finishing
touches - we wanna make easier for -
3:02 - 3:06people to use remote controls with
Democracy Player if they have something -
3:06 - 3:11like that. I have a few more ways that
people can customise and interact with it, -
3:11 - 3:16so it's mostly gonna be cleanup around
the edges, but I think it'll feel -
3:16 - 3:18a more complete experience.
-
3:18 - 3:22One of the biggest things that's about to
happen is we're going to be renaming -
3:22 - 3:27Democracy Player and we've found a lot
of people get confused by the name and -
3:29 - 3:33when they first hear about it they think
that it only has content related to -
3:33 - 3:37politics on it, which is definitely not
the case and not what we intended with -
3:37 - 3:43the name, so we feel like it's important
for us to find a new name. We have one -
3:43 - 3:48that we think is gonna work, we're just
going through some legal stuff and we're -
3:48 - 3:52obviously getting a new icon and
website design so as part of that -
3:52 - 4:001.0 process we're gonna be launching a
new name, new style for the player and -
4:00 - 4:01that's gonna be big too.
-
4:02 - 4:07But the final thing, and what I think is
the weakest part of the Democracy Player -
4:07 - 4:11experience is the channel guide; we're
rewriting that from scratch. -
4:11 - 4:15The version you see now is based on some
existing software that is out there and -
4:15 - 4:17doesn't exactly meet our needs.
-
4:17 - 4:21So what we're doing is starting over from
scratch, making something very fast, -
4:21 - 4:26very responsive and once we have a
good foundation built -
4:26 - 4:32we're going to be doing a lot of work to
add a rating system, find more ways to -
4:32 - 4:33trickle off the best content.
-
4:34 - 4:38As we've seen the channel guides reach
nearly a thousand different channels, -
4:39 - 4:43it becomes more and more important for us
to find ways of filtering the best stuff. -
4:43 - 4:47So we wanna make it easier for people to
share channels, rate channels, -
4:47 - 4:51and see what people really like and not
just subscribe to stuff that looks -
4:51 - 4:54attractive on the surface or on the guide.
-
4:55 - 4:58It feels like the next natural extension
for Democracy Player's gonna get is -
4:58 - 5:03PNP support such as PlayStation portable,
the video iPod or other small portable -
5:03 - 5:07video players and I know that's not
currently a feature of Democracy Player, -
5:07 - 5:11at least the ability to take the videos
that I've downloaded and push it to these -
5:11 - 5:14other devices, mainly because it's
extremely complex. -
5:14 - 5:18The video iPod is going to take a totally
different video format than the PSP which -
5:18 - 5:23is going to take a totally different
format than a Place4sure mobile device. -
5:23 - 5:27Is that on your roadmap to add, and is
that gonna be a 1.0 feature or later? -
5:27 - 5:29And how are you gonna deal with that?
-
5:30 - 5:35Yeah, syncing portable devices like that
is definitely something we wanna do. -
5:36 - 5:38It's not gonna happen for 1.0.
-
5:39 - 5:45We feel like our mission for 1.0 is to
make a solid and excellent desktop app -
5:46 - 5:49that you can use every day
and really rely upon. -
5:49 - 5:53That's what we wanna do for 1.0;
get a good foundation in place. -
5:53 - 5:58From there we'd like to see
Democracy Player be able to get us -
5:58 - 6:02content out on more different devices,
get it onto your TV more easily, -
6:02 - 6:05on any portable devices that you're using.
-
6:06 - 6:08So we're going to start tackling that.
-
6:08 - 6:13It may come in stages and it may
mean that we start with the ability to -
6:13 - 6:17sync to the most powerful devices to sync
file formats that they already play. -
6:18 - 6:22Then, later on, we add the ability to
transfer from one format into another, -
6:25 - 6:28so more of your videos are able to
play under iPod, for example. -
6:29 - 6:32That's definitely coming for us.
-
6:32 - 6:38Nicholas, last time we talked, we actually
went to you and that time, iTunes was -
6:38 - 6:41one version lower and it didn't have
good video support. -
6:41 - 6:47Since then, iTunes has added a whole new
video catalog, you have episodes of -
6:48 - 6:52shows and movies and whatnot, and they've
changed the way they deal with video. -
6:53 - 6:57How does that compete with Democracy?
Does it compete with Democracy? -
6:57 - 7:00And why are you better and different
than iTunes on that front? -
7:03 - 7:07Yeah, iTunes has made some improvements
to the video software but the focus they -
7:07 - 7:13have is really on accumulating
a collection of videos, for example, -
7:13 - 7:17movies that you buy off of the store,
music videos that you buy from the store, -
7:17 - 7:20and accumulating a
certain kind of collection. -
7:21 - 7:24Our focus is more on
the flow of the internet. -
7:24 - 7:27The flow of videos that is becoming
more and more a part of peoples' -
7:27 - 7:28online experience.
-
7:29 - 7:34I think we're really offering
an experience that's very different and -
7:34 - 7:38goes way beyond the approach
that iTunes pitched. -
7:39 - 7:43The channel model that we have really
lets you handle lots of videos coming in. -
7:46 - 7:51Seeing what's on a variety of channels,
organising that in different ways and -
7:52 - 7:55I think we still have them beat
in terms of video experience. -
7:57 - 8:00From a publisher standpoint, I think the
big differentiator between Democracy -
8:00 - 8:02and iTunes is torrent support.
-
8:03 - 8:07I can directly download a torrent
video file and as I'm publishing my -
8:07 - 8:13high-definition 1080p videos, which we do,
the bandwidth is taken off of me and so -
8:13 - 8:15now I no longer pay for the full
distribution of the file, -
8:15 - 8:16or maybe a little bit now.
-
8:16 - 8:20And I think that's really one of the big,
powerful features of Democracy. -
8:21 - 8:24You guys get kudos for having that
from the beginning. -
8:24 - 8:27That's really what makes you guys
different and stand out from the -
8:27 - 8:28rest of the crowd.
-
8:28 - 8:32Yeah, I think that the BitTorrent support
that we have is definitely something that -
8:32 - 8:39iTunes can't compete with and we also have
a lot more flexibility with video formats. -
8:40 - 8:44Both on Mac and Windows now, both able to
play Flash video files which are the most -
8:44 - 8:46popular online video files now.
-
8:47 - 8:52And a lot bigger variety of formats than
you can play on iTunes or -
8:52 - 8:58Windows media player or anything else
that tries to be a video organiser -
8:58 - 8:59or video downloader.
-
9:00 - 9:03Well, Nicholas, it's a great product and
we always enjoy chatting with you and -
9:03 - 9:06I hope you'll come back soon when you
release version 1.0; -
9:06 - 9:08whatever it'll be called at that point.
-
9:08 - 9:10-Thank you so much.
-You have a great day. -
9:10 - 9:12I'll definitely come back.
You too, take care.
