Once in Seven Years | Barış Özcan | TEDxBahcesehirUniversity
-
0:12 - 0:13The world is changed.
-
0:14 - 0:16I feel it in the water.
-
0:16 - 0:18I feel it in the earth.
-
0:18 - 0:20I smell it in the air.
-
0:21 - 0:23Much that once was is lost;
-
0:25 - 0:29for none now live who remember it.
(The Lord of the Rings) -
0:31 - 0:32Hello,
-
0:32 - 0:34I'm a person who tries to tell stories.
-
0:34 - 0:36So I wanted to start with the
-
0:36 - 0:39prologue of one of my favorite stories.
-
0:39 - 0:41It's a story that tells the world is
-
0:41 - 0:43changing, and in a way, it's a story that
-
0:43 - 0:45changes the world.
-
0:47 - 0:50Curiously enough, not only the world which
-
0:50 - 0:51can be evaluated as the place we live
-
0:51 - 0:54and as a great living being; but also
-
0:54 - 0:56we, as each of us being a small world
-
0:56 - 0:59who lives in it
-
1:00 - 1:01changes constantly.
-
1:01 - 1:03As we change,
-
1:03 - 1:05we change the world too.
-
1:06 - 1:08So I try to shoot documentary films
-
1:08 - 1:09in order to see those
-
1:09 - 1:12changes better.
-
1:13 - 1:17To document the world and people
-
1:17 - 1:19living on it in a better way.
-
1:20 - 1:22As Tarkovsky says;
-
1:22 - 1:24"Sculpting in time".
-
1:26 - 1:27But why?
-
1:27 - 1:30Why do we try to stop the time which is
-
1:30 - 1:32slipping by between our hands?
-
1:33 - 1:34Is it because we fear of what it
-
1:34 - 1:35transforms us into,
-
1:35 - 1:38or to seize the moment?
-
1:39 - 1:40"Gather ye rosebuds
-
1:40 - 1:42While ye may".
-
1:43 - 1:45Why did the poet write these lines?
-
1:47 - 1:49Because, believe it
-
1:49 - 1:50or not,
-
1:50 - 1:52everyone in this saloon
-
1:52 - 1:54will stop breathing one day.
-
1:54 - 1:56Because, with every moment,
-
1:56 - 1:58out stories are coming to an end.
-
1:58 - 1:59But we?
-
2:00 - 2:01We want eternity.
-
2:02 - 2:03Or at least, we want to
-
2:03 - 2:06catch the moments we live in,
-
2:06 - 2:07and eternalize them.
-
2:07 - 2:09That's why I try to
-
2:09 - 2:11shoot documentaries.
-
2:12 - 2:14About five years ago from today,
-
2:15 - 2:16when the term Selfie
-
2:16 - 2:18was not invented,
-
2:18 - 2:19one day I picked up my
-
2:19 - 2:21cell phone and took my own
-
2:21 - 2:22photo, to seize the moment.
-
2:23 - 2:24Next day, I took a photo one more
-
2:24 - 2:25time with the same angle.
-
2:26 - 2:27Then one more time,
-
2:27 - 2:29one more time,
-
2:29 - 2:31and I changed it into a project.
-
2:31 - 2:32As an indicator of my effort
-
2:32 - 2:33to seize the moment.
-
2:35 - 2:37And, in the past few days, months;
-
2:37 - 2:41I started shooting video blogs,
-
2:41 - 2:42or in popular terms, vlogs,
-
2:42 - 2:44at YouTube.
-
2:44 - 2:46What I do is to catch small sections
-
2:46 - 2:47from my life, to keep them
-
2:47 - 2:49and to share with others.
-
2:49 - 2:51And I name all of my efforts as
-
2:51 - 2:54personal documentarism.
-
2:56 - 2:58Personal documentarism.
-
2:58 - 2:59But there are other people who
-
2:59 - 3:01does this job, especially the documentary
-
3:01 - 3:03part, much better than me.
-
3:04 - 3:07For example, look at this documentary.
-
3:07 - 3:09Those children, you see, come together
-
3:10 - 3:12for the first time in their lives.
-
3:13 - 3:16They're all
7 years old, ordinary children. -
3:16 - 3:18Of course they all have
-
3:18 - 3:19different life stories, they come
-
3:19 - 3:21from different social environments.
-
3:22 - 3:27So why do you think they were
-
3:27 - 3:29brought together in that zoo,
-
3:29 - 3:32in a cold day of 1963?
-
3:33 - 3:35To do what?
-
3:35 - 3:36To shoot a documentary.
-
3:36 - 3:38To understand what the world
-
3:38 - 3:40will change into, in the future.
-
3:41 - 3:43Because today, in 2016,
-
3:43 - 3:44maybe one of these children works
-
3:44 - 3:47as a salesclerk in a store.
-
3:49 - 3:51And the child near him or her
-
3:51 - 3:53may be the manager of
-
3:53 - 3:55that chain store, who knows?
-
3:56 - 3:58But when we're watching them now,
-
3:58 - 4:00we see them as clean, white
-
4:00 - 4:02empty pages.
-
4:02 - 4:04Everyone will start to fill their
-
4:04 - 4:07notebooks with their own
-
4:07 - 4:09touches, as time passes by.
-
4:10 - 4:12Like Mr. Keating did
-
4:12 - 4:14in Dead Poets Society.
-
4:14 - 4:15And like he had it done.
-
4:15 - 4:17I want you to examine those
-
4:17 - 4:19faces belonging to the past.
-
4:20 - 4:22They don't seem
different from you, do they? -
4:22 - 4:24They feel invincible,
-
4:24 - 4:26like you feel now.
-
4:28 - 4:30For example, look
at these two impishes. -
4:31 - 4:33Their names are Bruce and Neil.
-
4:35 - 4:37They believe that their destinies
-
4:37 - 4:39are to achieve great things,
-
4:39 - 4:40like most of you believe.
-
4:41 - 4:43Especially look at Neil, on the right,
-
4:43 - 4:45talking continuously.
-
4:45 - 4:46His eyes; filled with
-
4:46 - 4:49light, life, hope,
-
4:49 - 4:50such as your eyes.
-
4:50 - 4:51But could those
-
4:51 - 4:53children do what their
-
4:53 - 4:54powers afford?
-
4:54 - 4:56Or did they wait until the ship
-
4:56 - 4:58has sailed?
-
4:59 - 5:01I wonder what did they change into
-
5:01 - 5:03as the world changes.
-
5:03 - 5:06I wish we could see it.
-
5:08 - 5:10The ones who shot this documentary
-
5:10 - 5:11could have thought the
-
5:11 - 5:13same because after 7 years,
-
5:13 - 5:17in the 1970s, they shot the second part
-
5:17 - 5:20of the documentary by visiting these 14
-
5:20 - 5:22children who came to the age of 14.
-
5:23 - 5:26In this part we see Neil as he goes
-
5:26 - 5:28to school with his bicycle.
-
5:28 - 5:30Now he is a student.
-
5:30 - 5:32It's clear in all aspects.
-
5:32 - 5:33Yes he is a student, but what
-
5:33 - 5:35happened to the light in his eyes?
-
5:36 - 5:38It started to dim out.
-
5:39 - 5:41So when 7 more years will pass,
-
5:41 - 5:44will this light totally dim out?
-
5:45 - 5:46The curious documentarists
-
5:46 - 5:48like you and me wondered about
-
5:48 - 5:50the answer of this question and
-
5:50 - 5:52they visited those 21 years old
-
5:52 - 5:54youngsters again.
-
5:55 - 5:57Now it's 1977.
-
5:57 - 5:59You can understand it from
-
5:59 - 6:00Neil's clothes.
-
6:00 - 6:02He got dressed up to date.
-
6:02 - 6:03He applied to Oxford University,
-
6:03 - 6:06but he wasn't accepted.
-
6:06 - 6:08He entered into a different university,
-
6:08 - 6:11but probably he couldn't hold on there.
-
6:12 - 6:15That's why he's not going to school now.
-
6:15 - 6:18During the interview, he is asked;
-
6:19 - 6:21"Would you like to be 7 years old again?"
-
6:22 - 6:24I want you to think about it.
-
6:24 - 6:27Would you like to be 7 years old again?
-
6:29 - 6:30Would you?
-
6:30 - 6:33If you could, what would you change?
-
6:33 - 6:36So why don't you change it now?
-
6:36 - 6:38It is seizing the moment, isn't it?
-
6:38 - 6:40Starting from now on.
-
6:42 - 6:44Neil says no to this question.
-
6:44 - 6:47"I wouldn't like to be 7, because
-
6:47 - 6:49I know that I will be 21 again".
-
6:49 - 6:52But still, he wants to be an important
-
6:52 - 6:55person in life and wants to influence
-
6:55 - 6:56other people's lives.
-
6:56 - 7:00In short, to change himself and the world.
-
7:02 - 7:04So this is Neil and the 4th part
-
7:04 - 7:07of the documentary which sheds light
-
7:07 - 7:10to his 13 friends' lives was published
-
7:10 - 7:13in 1984.
-
7:14 - 7:17And Neil is unemployed
-
7:17 - 7:18and homeless now.
-
7:18 - 7:21So he starts to look for a place to live
-
7:21 - 7:23by going around in England
-
7:23 - 7:24by hitch-hiking.
-
7:24 - 7:25After spending
-
7:25 - 7:28such a life for 7 years,
-
7:28 - 7:29he finally
-
7:30 - 7:34finds a place to live in a small island
-
7:34 - 7:36near Scotland.
-
7:36 - 7:37He even starts to act small
-
7:37 - 7:39parts in a local theatre there.
-
7:40 - 7:42In the life play that he acts on
-
7:42 - 7:43the stage of the world,
-
7:44 - 7:45this time we see him
-
7:45 - 7:47as a real actor.
-
7:47 - 7:49I wonder if he's pleased with himself now.
-
7:50 - 7:52How does he look like?
-
7:53 - 7:55Does he still feel invincible?
-
7:55 - 7:59Does he think that
he can change the world? -
7:59 - 8:01They ask him that;
-
8:01 - 8:02"Do you think you have failed?"
-
8:04 - 8:06I want you to ask this to yourselves.
-
8:06 - 8:09Do you think you have failed?
-
8:10 - 8:12What is the thing we call success?
-
8:12 - 8:14A target we want to reach,
-
8:14 - 8:17a treasure to seek and find.
-
8:17 - 8:18What is success?
-
8:19 - 8:21So do you wonder Neil's answer?
-
8:22 - 8:23"I cannot decide it" he says;
-
8:23 - 8:25"my life hasn't come to an end yet".
-
8:27 - 8:29This is an answer of a person who still
-
8:29 - 8:30believes that he can change.
-
8:30 - 8:33Indeed he's 42 years old,
-
8:33 - 8:34we see him near his childhood
-
8:34 - 8:36friend, Bruce.
-
8:36 - 8:38You remember Bruce, don't you?
-
8:38 - 8:39The boy who was 7,
-
8:39 - 8:40who sits in silence
-
8:40 - 8:42while Neil was
-
8:42 - 8:43speaking continuously.
-
8:43 - 8:44This is him.
-
8:44 - 8:46This documentary actually
-
8:46 - 8:48represents Bruce's life to us
-
8:48 - 8:50with 7 years of breaks too,
-
8:50 - 8:52but his life is more familiar,
-
8:52 - 8:54more ordinary.
-
8:54 - 8:56An education on mathematics,
-
8:56 - 8:59then graduation, then teaching,
-
8:59 - 9:01marriage, two children, etc.
-
9:02 - 9:05So what is Neil doing near his childhood
-
9:05 - 9:07friend after so many years?
-
9:08 - 9:10I want you to revive your memories
-
9:10 - 9:12for the answer.
-
9:12 - 9:14To think about his 21 years old status.
-
9:14 - 9:16You know, he left university
-
9:16 - 9:17but he still
-
9:17 - 9:20wanted to be an important person,
-
9:20 - 9:22to change the world.
-
9:23 - 9:25When they ask him, "How are you
-
9:25 - 9:27going to do that?",
-
9:27 - 9:28he said; "I don't know, maybe
-
9:28 - 9:30I'll go into politics".
-
9:30 - 9:31He couldn't do this for 21 years
-
9:31 - 9:34but in the age of 42, we see him
-
9:34 - 9:36in London, working as a council
-
9:36 - 9:38member in a local parliament.
-
9:38 - 9:41Moreover, 7 years pass
-
9:41 - 9:43and he is promoted to regional assembly.
-
9:43 - 9:457 more years pass and in 2012,
-
9:45 - 9:47when the 8th part of the documentary
-
9:47 - 9:51is published, there is a liberal democrat
-
9:51 - 9:53politician who joined in general
-
9:53 - 9:55elections in England.
-
9:56 - 9:57Maybe you have been waiting
-
9:57 - 9:58for me to tell you
-
9:58 - 10:00a story of success.
-
10:00 - 10:01To tell that he won the elections,
-
10:01 - 10:04he achieved his dreams,
-
10:04 - 10:05a happy ending.
-
10:05 - 10:05But no.
-
10:07 - 10:08He couldn't succeed, couldn't win,
-
10:08 - 10:10because real life stories are
-
10:10 - 10:12filled with obscurities.
-
10:12 - 10:15But isn't it the good side?
-
10:15 - 10:17To be unknown.
-
10:17 - 10:20After all, this documentary
-
10:20 - 10:22in Neil's life and his journey in life
-
10:22 - 10:24hasn't finished yet.
-
10:24 - 10:27And I wait excitedly and curiously
-
10:27 - 10:28for its new episode which will be
-
10:28 - 10:30published in 2019.
-
10:30 - 10:32So, why 7 years?
-
10:33 - 10:35To tell the truth, I couldn't find the
-
10:35 - 10:37answer of this inside the documentary.
-
10:38 - 10:41But biologically, it is said that we
-
10:41 - 10:43become a new person every 7 years.
-
10:43 - 10:44How?
-
10:44 - 10:47I'm going to give details about it,
-
10:47 - 10:49so I put brankets here, then
-
10:49 - 10:50I'll turn back to the documentary.
-
10:51 - 10:52There are about 37 trillion cells
-
10:52 - 10:54in our bodies and as I'm
-
10:54 - 10:56telling this, about 5 million cells
-
10:56 - 10:58of me has died.
-
11:00 - 11:01The same thing happened
-
11:01 - 11:04to you while you are watching
-
11:04 - 11:06or listening to me.
-
11:06 - 11:08But don't worry,
-
11:08 - 11:10because within this month, there will be
-
11:10 - 11:12about 450 billion new cells.
-
11:12 - 11:14More than the numbers of
-
11:14 - 11:15the stars in milkyway.
-
11:15 - 11:17And in 7 years, all of the cells
-
11:17 - 11:20within our bodies will be renewed.
-
11:20 - 11:22Almost all.
-
11:22 - 11:24So biologically, we will be
-
11:24 - 11:25whole new people.
-
11:25 - 11:26I especially say
-
11:26 - 11:28almost all because
-
11:28 - 11:31there is an important exception here,
-
11:31 - 11:32the brain cells.
-
11:32 - 11:34They are not renewed.
-
11:34 - 11:36Yes, that's right.
-
11:36 - 11:38They do not change.
-
11:38 - 11:39What about the ideas,
-
11:39 - 11:41thoughts within them?
-
11:42 - 11:43Maybe we are not aware
-
11:43 - 11:45of the change of the cells
-
11:45 - 11:46in our bodies.
-
11:46 - 11:47It happens out of our control,
-
11:47 - 11:49but to change the ideas,
-
11:49 - 11:51thoughts which are in the
-
11:51 - 11:53only unchangeable
-
11:53 - 11:55cell group, brain cells,
-
11:56 - 12:00it's in your hands.
-
12:00 - 12:01So I close the brackers,
-
12:01 - 12:03now I turn back to the documentary.
-
12:04 - 12:06Roger Eburt, who is a famous film critic,
-
12:06 - 12:09considers this documentary series called
-
12:09 - 12:12"Up" as one of the best 10 movies
-
12:13 - 12:14of all times, in other words,
-
12:14 - 12:16as one of the best 10 stories.
-
12:16 - 12:18And he says that it penetrates into
-
12:18 - 12:19life's mysterious center,
-
12:19 - 12:20because it is more real and
-
12:21 - 12:23actual than classical movies
-
12:23 - 12:25and fictional stories.
-
12:25 - 12:27It is the best to tell
-
12:27 - 12:29human beings' transformation
-
12:29 - 12:31and the unknown in that transformation.
-
12:32 - 12:35But there is a continuous transformation
-
12:35 - 12:38within the characters in the stories that
-
12:38 - 12:39people tell or make up.
-
12:39 - 12:41So, unless there is change
-
12:41 - 12:42there would be no stories.
-
12:43 - 12:45And this transformations generally
-
12:45 - 12:47resembles each other.
-
12:47 - 12:50Joseph Campbell, who makes research
-
12:50 - 12:52about legends and myths, wrote his
-
12:52 - 12:55work called "The Hero
with a Thousand Faces" -
12:55 - 12:58by setting out from these similarities.
-
12:59 - 13:02The legends created
by archaic civilizations and -
13:02 - 13:04the stories told by asunder civilizations
-
13:04 - 13:07always resemble each other.
-
13:08 - 13:11The transformations within these,
-
13:11 - 13:13works like a clock.
-
13:15 - 13:17In all of these,
the hero goes on an inner or -
13:17 - 13:20external journey and he
-
13:21 - 13:23goes on an adventure.
-
13:23 - 13:24Then, by growing up,
-
13:24 - 13:26by changing, transforming,
-
13:26 - 13:29he goes back to home.
-
13:30 - 13:32At first he gets a mysterious call,
-
13:32 - 13:33the call to adventure.
-
13:34 - 13:37Then he realizes that
he needs help, so support -
13:37 - 13:39appears suddenly.
-
13:39 - 13:41Probably from an old man with white beard,
-
13:41 - 13:43from a wise person.
-
13:44 - 13:47Then he leaves his usual comfort zone,
-
13:47 - 13:49his home and
-
13:49 - 13:51he sets off.
-
13:52 - 13:54So our adventure starts, an adventure
-
13:54 - 13:56in this very special world.
-
13:56 - 13:58There, he meets with some obstacles
-
13:58 - 14:00which he tries to overcome
-
14:00 - 14:03by some experiments.
-
14:04 - 14:06Then the greatest obstacle,
-
14:06 - 14:09the hardest test approaches.
-
14:09 - 14:10Like higher education or
-
14:10 - 14:11high school exams.
-
14:11 - 14:13A very hard exam.
-
14:13 - 14:15It is such a great hardship
-
14:15 - 14:16that he starts to live
-
14:16 - 14:18the most distressed moments
-
14:18 - 14:20of his life.
-
14:20 - 14:23And in that moment of crisis,
-
14:23 - 14:26he comes to the threshold of death.
-
14:26 - 14:29Like the way the clock shows,
-
14:29 - 14:31he strikes the bottom.
-
14:33 - 14:34But the one who bides,
-
14:34 - 14:38who can survive,
-
14:38 - 14:40gets his gift, finds his treasure
-
14:40 - 14:42at the end.
-
14:42 - 14:45Because the sun rises right after
-
14:45 - 14:47the night which occurs due to the
-
14:47 - 14:51earth's rotation and
-
14:51 - 14:52we reach to the
-
14:52 - 14:53light and treasure of the sun.
-
14:55 - 14:58All in all, the whole hardships are
-
14:58 - 15:02passed in this
special world of adventures. -
15:03 - 15:04The hero starts to return
-
15:04 - 15:06to his ordinary world.
-
15:06 - 15:09But he has changed.
-
15:09 - 15:11I don't know if 7 years have passed,
-
15:11 - 15:13but he has changed.
-
15:15 - 15:18And he is ready for a new life now.
-
15:19 - 15:22The open-ended subjects in the story
-
15:22 - 15:23are solved,
-
15:23 - 15:25the questions are answered and
-
15:25 - 15:29we reach to the end of story or
-
15:29 - 15:31to a new beginning.
-
15:32 - 15:35Like the clock,
change doesn't have an end. -
15:35 - 15:38The transformation of hour and minute
-
15:38 - 15:39hand, flow the time.
-
15:39 - 15:41As the time flows,
-
15:41 - 15:44we, who are living our personal lives,
-
15:44 - 15:45change gradually.
-
15:45 - 15:47Yes maybe we don't struggle with
-
15:47 - 15:48monsters, but we
-
15:48 - 15:51face with so important problems.
-
15:51 - 15:52Like Neil,
-
15:52 - 15:54like Frodo.
-
15:55 - 15:57Like them, we face with problems too.
-
15:57 - 16:00Because the transformation starts
-
16:00 - 16:02with decisions, choices.
-
16:03 - 16:05And it continues with
-
16:05 - 16:06determination, working
-
16:06 - 16:08and struggle.
-
16:08 - 16:10If there is a treasure that you search
-
16:10 - 16:11for the whole life,
-
16:11 - 16:14of course there is a price for that.
-
16:14 - 16:16"The cave you fear to enter, holds the
-
16:16 - 16:18treasure you seek",
-
16:18 - 16:19says Campbell.
-
16:19 - 16:22In order to find that treasure,
-
16:22 - 16:23do not fear to enter the cave,
-
16:23 - 16:25do not fear of changing,
-
16:25 - 16:27of transformation.
-
16:29 - 16:32Yes, I've had great moments
-
16:32 - 16:34with you today, that I can
-
16:34 - 16:35add to my personal story.
-
16:35 - 16:37So if you'll excuse me,
-
16:37 - 16:39I want to record that moment.
-
16:39 - 16:41Don't stop, you record it too,
-
16:41 - 16:44we've had this together.
-
16:46 - 16:48Our personal stories, with my words,
-
16:48 - 16:51our personal
documentaries coincided today. -
16:52 - 16:54It seem that I have time.
-
16:54 - 16:55One last thing for you,
-
16:55 - 16:58I want to give a last advice.
-
16:58 - 17:01You should start personal documentarism.
-
17:01 - 17:03If there any images,
-
17:03 - 17:05photos,
-
17:05 - 17:06collect them.
-
17:06 - 17:08Try to start a retrospective
-
17:08 - 17:11journey by looking at them.
-
17:11 - 17:13For instance, find a photo of yourself
-
17:13 - 17:15taken 7 years ago.
-
17:16 - 17:18Which dreams you had that day?
-
17:18 - 17:21In which stage are you,
in your personal story? -
17:22 - 17:23Can you remember?
-
17:24 - 17:25How you've changed.
-
17:27 - 17:28And if you can, find a photo of
-
17:29 - 17:32yourself when you were 7.
-
17:34 - 17:37Ask yourself what do you want that child
-
17:37 - 17:38to change into?
-
17:38 - 17:40Change into what?
-
17:40 - 17:41And what does
that child change -
17:41 - 17:45in his world, in the world we live in?
-
17:47 - 17:49Look at that photo again.
-
17:50 - 17:53If you get a little bit closer,
-
17:53 - 17:56you can hear it whispers something to you.
-
17:57 - 18:00Incline your ear. Listen.
-
18:00 - 18:01What does it say?
-
18:02 - 18:03Seize the moment.
-
18:03 - 18:05It turns your life into unusual.
-
18:05 - 18:06Do not fear.
-
18:06 - 18:07Do not avoid.
-
18:07 - 18:08Because you're changing
-
18:09 - 18:12and you're changing the world.
-
18:12 - 18:13Thank you.
-
18:13 - 18:17(Applause)
