0:12 - 0:16Hi, Mrfixitrick here...
-
0:16 - 0:20and today we're going to give a demonstration
-
0:20 - 0:24of the Magnetic Drive Plasma Ball.
-
0:24 - 0:28Here's the idea with the magnetic drive.
-
0:28 - 0:33Okay, we've got six neodymium magnets
-
0:33 - 0:37glued to the bottom of the plasma ball.
-
0:37 - 0:41There are six neodymium magnets also
-
0:41 - 0:45in the top of this rotating disc here
-
0:45 - 0:49which is attached to a
-
0:49 - 0:53blower motor, a 12-volt blower motor inside this contraption.
-
0:53 - 0:58With the magnets, these six magnets
-
0:58 - 1:02are all North-up; these six magnets are also North-up.
-
1:02 - 1:06And when they go together, they go together in repelling mode.
-
1:06 - 1:10And it's all controlled by remote control.
-
1:10 - 1:14
-
1:14 - 1:18You can see that the ball
-
1:18 - 1:22has a magnetic coupling with the
-
1:22 - 1:26with the rotating disc here. Part of my
-
1:26 - 1:31vacuum chamber here...It's got a 1/2 inch thick
-
1:31 - 1:35polycarbonate base, and we're going
-
1:35 - 1:39to put the Plasma Ball inside of that,
-
1:39 - 1:43and it's free to rotate
-
1:43 - 1:47in there, and just going to set that on top
-
1:47 - 1:51of our rotating magnetic drive,
-
1:51 - 1:55and see what happens. Ok we've got
-
1:55 - 2:00a magnetic drive! In spite of it going through the 1/2 inch polycarbonate;
-
2:00 - 2:04the fields have to go through the polycarbonate.
-
2:04 - 2:08Ok, this is our experimental apparatus here...
-
2:08 - 2:12where we have a polycarbonate
-
2:12 - 2:16structure with a Plasma Ball inside.
-
2:16 - 2:20The Plasma Ball is lit up currently,
-
2:20 - 2:24and it's self-powered with 4 AAA batteries
-
2:24 - 2:29in it's base. So what we're going to do...this is a protective cover for this experiment
-
2:29 - 2:33more than anything else. Eventually we'll make this into
-
2:33 - 2:37a vacuum plasma container.
-
2:37 - 2:41But for now, it's protection. And we're going to get
-
2:41 - 2:45a nice close-up of this thing spinning at high-speed.
-
2:45 - 2:49
-
2:49 - 2:53I guess we're ready, so let's dim the lights...
-
2:53 - 2:57and fire things up! Oh, one last detail..
-
2:57 - 3:02Safety glasses! One for you...
-
3:02 - 3:06Thank-you. I have two observers here.
-
3:06 - 3:10today, observing me doing crazy things...
-
3:10 - 3:14Oh, one more thing I have to do here...
-
3:14 - 3:18I've gotta put on my Lab Coat! Pretty snazzy, eh?
-
3:18 - 3:22I'll just model it here, although you won't be able to see anything, but trust me
-
3:22 - 3:26It's white. Therefore it's official!
-
3:26 - 3:30That's what they teach us in school...wear white things,
-
3:30 - 3:35and you can say you are official! Ok,
-
3:35 - 3:39ahhh, lights...there we go...
-
3:39 - 3:43It's a little wobbly, but we'll see. Oh look at that. That's pretty cool already!
-
3:43 - 3:47We see with a little bit of spinning,
-
3:47 - 3:51The plasma....it comes to a stop, the plasma keeps rotating...
-
3:51 - 3:55The gases keep rotating. It has momentum! Exactly!
-
3:55 - 3:59Ok, wheee!
-
3:59 - 4:04That's pretty cool. so, yeah,
-
4:04 - 4:08Yeah, it's pretty shakey!
-
4:08 - 4:12I don't know how far we're gonna get with this! I'm just going to shut it down, and we
-
4:12 - 4:16can watch it stop now, and it keeps rotating...
-
4:16 - 4:20Cool! ...it also seems
-
4:20 - 4:24the arms seemed to stay up high there, didn't they? I'll try that again...
-
4:24 - 4:28
-
4:28 - 4:32
-
4:33 - 4:37Ok, I'm going to shut it down now...
-
4:37 - 4:41Wheee, yes, the arms
-
4:41 - 4:45all stay up at the top and rotate; they don't go down toward
-
4:45 - 4:49the bottom while it's still rotating. That's pretty cool.
-
4:49 - 4:53So what would be the speed, so far?
-
4:53 - 4:57So far, we've only gone up to what 400 rpm or so. We're going to try
-
4:57 - 5:01to shoot for like 3000 or somewhere in that range. See if its holding...
-
5:01 - 5:06It's dubious that we're going to make it. I think we're gonna crash,
-
5:06 - 5:10before that happens. If we get 1000, we should celebrate. That's ok, that's ok.
-
5:10 - 5:14So, ok, it could just, well I don't know what it could do,
-
5:14 - 5:18that's why we're trying it. I just have to double-check
-
5:18 - 5:22if we are ok here, is anything weird going to happen? It shouldn't jump off the whole table
-
5:22 - 5:26unless we have levitation...
-
5:26 - 5:30and if that's the case, we can all jump for joy!
-
5:30 - 5:35We'd have the cheapest levitating device yet! There I'm going to hold it like
-
5:35 - 5:39this.
-
5:39 - 5:43
-
5:43 - 5:47
-
5:47 - 5:51What do you have there now?
-
5:51 - 5:551000? Yes, very nearly 1000, 900
-
5:55 - 5:59
-
5:59 - 6:03Look at the beam, it's amazing!
-
6:03 - 6:07It's like it pops up all of a sudden. Wow, yeah!
-
6:07 - 6:12see what it does...1100. 1100, Ok we'll shut it down...
-
6:12 - 6:16Wheeee! Hmmm...
-
6:16 - 6:20Interesting...I would have figured they would stay on the equator...
-
6:20 - 6:24but it creates shapes, eh? Yes, it was almost an hour-glass shape
-
6:24 - 6:28the way it looked in the camera, here.
-
6:28 - 6:32I think we did something to it...something strange happened...
-
6:33 - 6:37haha, poor thing!
-
6:37 - 6:41ok, let's take it up again, let's take it up to
-
6:41 - 6:45some sort of Vmax here...
-
6:45 - 6:49Try to find the right rpms...
-
6:49 - 6:53500...
-
6:53 - 6:57
-
6:57 - 7:01800...1000
-
7:01 - 7:05Ohhh! hahaha.
-
7:05 - 7:09Nearly 1100 there. She popped out of her top there...
-
7:10 - 7:14Ok, we need a pause for the cause, and regroup on this one! (clap, clap)
-
7:14 - 7:18Yay! So far, so good!
-
7:18 - 7:22
-
7:22 - 7:26Whoops...
-
7:26 - 7:30Ah, the battery tray just came out and got stuck to the magnet...
-
7:30 - 7:34
-
7:34 - 7:42Whoo!...Ok, enough of that...
- Title:
- Magnetic Drive Plasma Ball
- Description:
-
Mrfixitrick and gang spin up a Plasma Ball with a magnetic drive, to test the drive for further experiments. We noticed the "run-on" effect of the plasma gases when stopping the Plasma Ball. We also began to see a "central tendril" effect at speed...shortly before a "near-catastrophic failure"! ;)
Back to the drawing board...but a fun test, and good to know that this magnetic drive can still work through 1/2 inch thick polycarbonate plate.
