    Hi, Mrfixitrick here...
  • 0:16 - 0:20
and today we're going to give a demonstration
  • 0:20 - 0:24
of the Magnetic Drive Plasma Ball.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
Here's the idea with the magnetic drive.
  • 0:28 - 0:33
Okay, we've got six neodymium magnets
  • 0:33 - 0:37
glued to the bottom of the plasma ball.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
There are six neodymium magnets also
  • 0:41 - 0:45
in the top of this rotating disc here
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    which is attached to a
  • 0:49 - 0:53
blower motor, a 12-volt blower motor inside this contraption.
  • 0:53 - 0:58
With the magnets, these six magnets
  • 0:58 - 1:02
are all North-up; these six magnets are also North-up.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
And when they go together, they go together in repelling mode.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
And it's all controlled by remote control.
  • 1:10 - 1:14
  • 1:14 - 1:18
You can see that the ball
  • 1:18 - 1:22
has a magnetic coupling with the
  • 1:22 - 1:26
with the rotating disc here. Part of my
  • 1:26 - 1:31
vacuum chamber here...It's got a 1/2 inch thick
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    polycarbonate base, and we're going
  • 1:35 - 1:39
to put the Plasma Ball inside of that,
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    and it's free to rotate
  • 1:43 - 1:47
in there, and just going to set that on top
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    of our rotating magnetic drive,
  • 1:51 - 1:55
and see what happens. Ok we've got
  • 1:55 - 2:00
    a magnetic drive! In spite of it going through the 1/2 inch polycarbonate;
  • 2:00 - 2:04
the fields have to go through the polycarbonate.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
Ok, this is our experimental apparatus here...
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    where we have a polycarbonate
  • 2:12 - 2:16
structure with a Plasma Ball inside.
  • 2:16 - 2:20
The Plasma Ball is lit up currently,
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    and it's self-powered with 4 AAA batteries
  • 2:24 - 2:29
in it's base. So what we're going to do...this is a protective cover for this experiment
  • 2:29 - 2:33
more than anything else. Eventually we'll make this into
  • 2:33 - 2:37
    a vacuum plasma container.
  • 2:37 - 2:41
But for now, it's protection. And we're going to get
  • 2:41 - 2:45
a nice close-up of this thing spinning at high-speed.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
  • 2:49 - 2:53
I guess we're ready, so let's dim the lights...
  • 2:53 - 2:57
and fire things up! Oh, one last detail..
  • 2:57 - 3:02
    Safety glasses! One for you...
  • 3:02 - 3:06
Thank-you. I have two observers here.
  • 3:06 - 3:10
today, observing me doing crazy things...
  • 3:10 - 3:14
Oh, one more thing I have to do here...
  • 3:14 - 3:18
I've gotta put on my Lab Coat! Pretty snazzy, eh?
  • 3:18 - 3:22
I'll just model it here, although you won't be able to see anything, but trust me
  • 3:22 - 3:26
    It's white. Therefore it's official!
  • 3:26 - 3:30
That's what they teach us in school...wear white things,
  • 3:30 - 3:35
and you can say you are official! Ok,
  • 3:35 - 3:39
    ahhh, lights...there we go...
  • 3:39 - 3:43
It's a little wobbly, but we'll see. Oh look at that. That's pretty cool already!
  • 3:43 - 3:47
We see with a little bit of spinning,
  • 3:47 - 3:51
The plasma....it comes to a stop, the plasma keeps rotating...
  • 3:51 - 3:55
The gases keep rotating. It has momentum! Exactly!
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    Ok, wheee!
  • 3:59 - 4:04
    That's pretty cool. so, yeah,
  • 4:04 - 4:08
    Yeah, it's pretty shakey!
  • 4:08 - 4:12
I don't know how far we're gonna get with this! I'm just going to shut it down, and we
  • 4:12 - 4:16
can watch it stop now, and it keeps rotating...
  • 4:16 - 4:20
    Cool! ...it also seems
  • 4:20 - 4:24
the arms seemed to stay up high there, didn't they? I'll try that again...
  • 4:24 - 4:28
  • 4:28 - 4:32
  • 4:33 - 4:37
Ok, I'm going to shut it down now...
  • 4:37 - 4:41
    Wheee, yes, the arms
  • 4:41 - 4:45
all stay up at the top and rotate; they don't go down toward
  • 4:45 - 4:49
the bottom while it's still rotating. That's pretty cool.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
So what would be the speed, so far?
  • 4:53 - 4:57
So far, we've only gone up to what 400 rpm or so. We're going to try
  • 4:57 - 5:01
to shoot for like 3000 or somewhere in that range. See if its holding...
  • 5:01 - 5:06
It's dubious that we're going to make it. I think we're gonna crash,
  • 5:06 - 5:10
before that happens. If we get 1000, we should celebrate. That's ok, that's ok.
  • 5:10 - 5:14
So, ok, it could just, well I don't know what it could do,
  • 5:14 - 5:18
that's why we're trying it. I just have to double-check
  • 5:18 - 5:22
if we are ok here, is anything weird going to happen? It shouldn't jump off the whole table
  • 5:22 - 5:26
    unless we have levitation...
  • 5:26 - 5:30
and if that's the case, we can all jump for joy!
  • 5:30 - 5:35
We'd have the cheapest levitating device yet! There I'm going to hold it like
  • 5:35 - 5:39
    this.
  • 5:39 - 5:43
  • 5:43 - 5:47
  • 5:47 - 5:51
What do you have there now?
  • 5:51 - 5:55
    1000? Yes, very nearly 1000, 900
  • 5:55 - 5:59
  • 5:59 - 6:03
Look at the beam, it's amazing!
  • 6:03 - 6:07
It's like it pops up all of a sudden. Wow, yeah!
  • 6:07 - 6:12
see what it does...1100. 1100, Ok we'll shut it down...
  • 6:12 - 6:16
    Wheeee! Hmmm...
  • 6:16 - 6:20
Interesting...I would have figured they would stay on the equator...
  • 6:20 - 6:24
but it creates shapes, eh? Yes, it was almost an hour-glass shape
  • 6:24 - 6:28
the way it looked in the camera, here.
  • 6:28 - 6:32
I think we did something to it...something strange happened...
  • 6:33 - 6:37
    haha, poor thing!
  • 6:37 - 6:41
ok, let's take it up again, let's take it up to
  • 6:41 - 6:45
    some sort of Vmax here...
  • 6:45 - 6:49
Try to find the right rpms...
  • 6:49 - 6:53
    500...
  • 6:53 - 6:57
  • 6:57 - 7:01
    800...1000
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    Ohhh! hahaha.
  • 7:05 - 7:09
Nearly 1100 there. She popped out of her top there...
  • 7:10 - 7:14
Ok, we need a pause for the cause, and regroup on this one! (clap, clap)
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    Yay! So far, so good!
  • 7:18 - 7:22
  • 7:22 - 7:26
    Whoops...
  • 7:26 - 7:30
Ah, the battery tray just came out and got stuck to the magnet...
  • 7:30 - 7:34
  • 7:34 - 7:42
    Whoo!...Ok, enough of that...
Title:
Magnetic Drive Plasma Ball
Description:

Mrfixitrick and gang spin up a Plasma Ball with a magnetic drive, to test the drive for further experiments. We noticed the "run-on" effect of the plasma gases when stopping the Plasma Ball. We also began to see a "central tendril" effect at speed...shortly before a "near-catastrophic failure"! ;)

Back to the drawing board...but a fun test, and good to know that this magnetic drive can still work through 1/2 inch thick polycarbonate plate.
