Things You Think - When Life Departs

  • 0:15 - 0:17
    [Young child]: Um..You see,
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    there was this dog
that I was really fond of.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
And when they told me that he died
  • 0:22 - 0:25
I cried a lot after that.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    [Young child]: When you die,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    first, you feel all floppy.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
And then, you go...and then you go stiff.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    [Girl]: Everybody dies at
    some point or another.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
[Boy]: There's a illness called "cancer"
  • 0:55 - 0:57
and you can die very quickly from it.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
It must be very powerful, or something.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
[Young child]: And babies don't really die a lot.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
Um, only when you grow up.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
Um...Well, you...you just get too old for your age...
  • 1:12 - 1:15
...and you die, but babies don't die much,
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    so...your brother mightn't die.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    When they told me
that my little brother had died...
  • 1:22 - 1:25
...I thought that they were just joking
and having a bit of fun.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
When I holded him, he was freezing cold.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
And then I realized that he was dead.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
But when they put him into the coffin, um...
  • 1:40 - 1:42
...it made me cry a lot because...
  • 1:42 - 1:44
...I had to..I had to say, "Goodbye."
  • 1:53 - 1:57
[Young child]: I believe in life
    after death, definitely.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    Well...
  • 1:59 - 2:01
..when you're lying in your coffin...
  • 2:01 - 2:04
...it's like you wake up again.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
And there's a lift beside you.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
And you step into this lift...
  • 2:15 - 2:17
...and you go up, up into heaven.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
[Young child]: Imagine you're in a tunnel.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
You walk through it, and then...
  • 2:26 - 2:30
    there's a huge city
    straight in front of you.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    [Young child]: You might meet
    your granny, or..
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    ...granddad that died in 1939.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    [Young child]: Um...
  • 3:04 - 3:06
I think you can't really walk up there.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
I think God gives you special feet...
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    ...to walk around up there.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    And..and there's this big cloud...
  • 3:14 - 3:16
..that you can play football on, like me.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    [Girl]: And I think,
if you're buried up in heaven,
  • 3:29 - 3:32
you drop straight down to Earth.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
[Boy]: I think that when you die,
    you lie there and rot.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    And your..then your soul
    flies up to heaven.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
Or maybe down to the devil,
    if you've been bad.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
[Young child]: There is really a lot of
    embers and fire and lava.
  • 3:47 - 3:51
Because deep down in the Earth's core
    is where Hell is...
  • 3:51 - 3:53
..and there is a lot of lava.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    [Boy]: It's horrible.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
    When you're in hell,
the devil locks you in a cage, and...
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    You...cry out for help.
  • 4:11 - 4:15
    And...and then he
pulls a lever, and everything goes...
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    ...."PFFF."
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    The devil wants a person
    and God wants a person...
  • 4:20 - 4:22
...but it's best to go up to God.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    [Young child]: I think
God looks like an old king.
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    A very old king.
  • 4:38 - 4:42
Maybe his brain has been cut up
    into thousands of pieces.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
I don't know how many people
    are in the world, but...
  • 4:47 - 4:53
...one of the piece thinks about you,
and another thinks about someone else.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    [Young child]: I don't think
    there's a God.
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    [Boy]: I went 'round,
    the whole time,
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    ...screaming in pain,
'cause my head hurt so badly.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
It's hard to decide what you want to do.
  • 5:13 - 5:16
    Whether to go to heaven,
or stay with your mum and dad.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
But, you can see if you'd prefer
to go up there, and be better..
  • 5:23 - 5:25
...or stay down here and live your life.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    [Girl]: Well, I went down
    to the water's edge.
  • 5:31 - 5:34
And then, I just saw these two clouds..
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    ..that looked like
    my great granny and granddad.
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    And then, there was this
    other cloud that just..
  • 5:39 - 5:42
..came up behind it, and it, uh..
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    It looked like a chair.
  • 5:43 - 5:47
And it looked like they were just
sitting on the chair, waving to me.
  • 5:47 - 5:50
    But, some people just say
    I'm superstitious.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
[Boy]: I think that when you die,
you can come back to life...
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    ...as a girl...
  • 5:56 - 5:57
    ...or a boy...
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    ...or a spider...
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    ...or a mouse.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    Or something.
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    [Boy]: Maybe..maybe my brother..
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    ..could come back down
    as a duck.
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    I don't know, really.
  • 6:17 - 6:20
And then I could keep him, maybe.
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    I put my hands together,
    and I say,
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    "Please, please, God,
  • 6:32 - 6:35
can I talk to my brother
    for one minute? Amen."
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    Sometimes. um..
  • 6:40 - 6:43
I dream about my little brother,
  • 6:43 - 6:44
and when he was really, really tiny,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
I used to play with him.
  • 6:46 - 6:49
and I used to teach him, um, how to walk,
  • 6:49 - 6:51
but I know it was a bit soon...
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    Um...
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    ...but that was fun.
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    [Girl]: I think a soul..
  • 6:59 - 7:02
..is like a thing inside your body.
  • 7:02 - 7:05
    Like a ghost, really.
  • 7:06 - 7:09
[Boy]: You can't live without a soul.
  • 7:09 - 7:11
    That's what I believe.
  • 7:15 - 7:19
    [Boy]: It's...your soul that
    makes your heart beat.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
    Maybe...that's what kills you...
  • 7:23 - 7:25
...your soul getting weaker and weaker.
  • 7:26 - 7:31
    [Sounds of children playing,
    a girl jumping rope]
  • 7:39 - 7:41
[Girl]: Well, to tell you the truth...
  • 7:42 - 7:43
...I'm not that scared of dying.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
I mean, to think of all the time I have left.
  • 7:46 - 7:48
I..I'm not scared about it, not now.
