-
7 ways to caption your videos!!
-
In no particular order.
-
1) Writing down your captions on a piece of
paper and holding it up.
-
Not the quickest solution.
-
But you can be creative!
-
2) Alternatively you can also scan these papers
and then put them in when you're editing.
-
3) Or you can add the captions when you are
editing the video as text. Again you can use
-
whatever font/color you that you like.
-
4) you can write a text file where you write
from what time to what time you say what thing,
-
and then you do that for every line or every
text that you want.
-
That's a terrible, terrible idea though
-
It takes so much time! I've
tried this before and it takes hours. By far,
-
I would say, the slowest way to do this! And...
-
No.
-
5) Or you can write a script for the video
and then copy paste that into this little
-
box and then YouTube will let you time it
so that it appears at the right time. Or if
-
you don't have a script you can watch the
video and then type the captions at the same
-
time and then time it later. A good thing
with writing a script though is that your
-
"text program" whatever it is that you're
using, is probably better at spelling than
-
your browser or your editing software.
-
6) Or you can watch the video and type in
the captions as you're watching it.
-
YouTube has this feature that says "pause while typing"
But that doesn't work in my experience.
-
This could be brilliant but it's not really. Instead
YouTube just plays the video whenever it wants.
-
And that makes me very stressed and I feel
like I have to type super fast. So maybe not
-
for the best thing for me at least.
-
[sidenote] OK. The "pause while typing button" has never worked for me before.
-
Until today when I'm making this video and trying to show you what it looks like.
-
I don't know if YouTube has fixed this since I last uploaded a video, which would be great news!
-
Or it's just messing with me and it'll go back to not working again as soon as I'm done uploading this.
-
7) And now the last one, the one that I prefer.
-
But is not the best one, definitely not. And not the one I should be using.
-
Automatic captions.
-
"But automatic captions don't work!"
-
I know.
-
But you can edit them!!
And the good thing with is that they're already timed.
-
It might not be super accurate and
have the right words. But at least it has
-
them in the right place and you don't have
to stretch and drag that little thing. And
-
like change, this word should have been over
here instead, and it's a silent bit and there
-
shouldn't be any words here. It understands
that fairly well and it makes it a little bit easier.
-
Also this encourages me to speak more slowly
-
and clearly. So maybe it'll get all the words
right and the timing will be better.
-
However this doesn't always pause when you're writing
and it doesn't have the best spellchecker.
-
And also YouTube doesn't always provide automatic
captions. It is supposed to do if you're speaking English.
-
But idk, for some reason it doesn't
always work. And then this feature doesn't work at all
-
and then you have to write it all yourself
-
and then again back to super frustrating when I'm typing and it plays anyway.
-
Yeah, no. Not recommended.
-
SO IN CONCLUSION. I would advise myself to
do number five on this list.
-
Which is writing a sprint and then copy paste that, and timing it.
-
Probably not going to listen to that though
-
and just keep on fighting the struggle with
automatic captions, because
-
I'm stubborn and that seems like it should be easier, but it's not.
-
And also I don't have scripts for all my videos.
-
I have for this one though because
otherwise I couldn't have done these ones.
-
And if you want to listen to someone explain further WHY you should have captions on your videos,
-
because you should,
-
you can watch Rikki's video.
-
I'll put a link to that in the description.
-
Also subscribe to her because
she's really cool, and her tumblr!
-
But yeah let me know how you caption your
videos. Is it one of the things I listed in this?
-
If it's something else, do please let
me know.
-
Maybe it's even easier then my none-easy ways of doing it.
-
Or just which way do you
think sound the easiest.
-
Let me know and have a nice life!
-
Goodbye.
