"Women of Hope" | Morley | TEDxWomen

  • 0:14 - 0:17
Thank you, Pat. What a blessing to be here
  • 0:17 - 0:19
in the spirit of resilience and hope.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
Standing next to me is my dear friend,
    Robert Makatengae.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    (Applause)
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    This song was inspired
by a television program I watched,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    about women and war.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
And sometimes there's no place to turn
  • 0:37 - 0:40
when something hits you so hard,
    other than music
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    or a song,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
or something you create, a prayer.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    The chorus is inspired by
    Aung San Suu Kyi.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    In 2003 she was released
  • 0:52 - 0:54
from house arrest for 24 hours.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
And the military there, the hunta,
thought maybe a few hundred people
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    would come and hear her.
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    And see her.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    But over a million people
came to hear what she had to say.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
And out of that big group of people,
one person stood forward and said,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    "We're feeling so helpless,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    living under this dictatorship,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
what can we do, we have nothing?"
  • 1:14 - 1:17
And she said, "If you're feeling helpless
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    help someone."
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    Women of hope.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    (Music)
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    They stood together
  • 1:41 - 1:44
under a tree in tall grass
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    on TV
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    telling the world
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    their story
  • 1:54 - 1:57
We will be left to wander
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    and fade away
  • 2:01 - 2:04
Soldiers came and took our husbands
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    at the break of day
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    We will live on
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    then fade away
  • 2:15 - 2:18
Soldiers came and killed our children
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    at the break of day
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    Women of hope
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    Women of change
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    Women of war and pain
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    I believe the almighty knows
each and every one of you
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    by your name
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    Women of hope
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    Women of change
  • 2:40 - 2:43
Women of love, joy, no shame
  • 2:43 - 2:45
You've got something this little life
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    can never take away
  • 2:52 - 2:55
Running through the darkness of night
  • 2:55 - 2:58
with a child by her side
  • 2:58 - 3:01
Oh Lord, won't you give them
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    a shining armor of light
  • 3:05 - 3:08
Oh Lord, won't you give them
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    a shining armor of light
  • 3:17 - 3:20
Daybreak brings a sign of new life
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    with the power to stand
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    Crossing the border
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    she said,
"You will grow free on this land"
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    Women of hope
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    Women of change
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    Women of war and pain
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    I can feel your power
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    in these words she said
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    help someone
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    help someone
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    Nobody really knows
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    how far they will go
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    to keep on living
  • 4:32 - 4:35
    Nobody really knows
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    how far they will go
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    to keep on giving
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    and forgiving
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    Aung San Suu Kyi
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    living under house arrest
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    for her peaceful protest
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    under house arrest
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    for her peaceful protest
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    When her people asked her
    for a message
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    she said
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 5:20 - 5:23
    help someone
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    help someone
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    help someone
  • 5:37 - 5:40
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    help someone
  • 5:42 - 5:44
Now we know the words, let's sing.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    help someone
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 5:53 - 5:56
    help someone
  • 5:57 - 6:00
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    help someone
  • 6:04 - 6:07
    If you're feeling helpless
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    help someone
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    People of hope
  • 6:13 - 6:14
    People of change
  • 6:14 - 6:17
People of love, joy, no shame
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    I believe the almighty
  • 6:19 - 6:21
knows each and every one of you
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    by your name
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    Thank you.
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    (Applause)
