  • 0:01 - 0:03
Welcome to innovator tribe, outside the bubble.
  • 0:03 - 0:09
A show about bridging the gap between the inspiration of idea to the creation of a product.
  • 0:09 - 0:26
    [music]
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    Amar, what's up man?
  • 0:28 - 0:29
How are you doing today, bro?
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    Man, I'm blessed, man,
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    I'm happy, you know
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    I'm positive
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    I'm focused
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    I'm...I'm doing good.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    And
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    I'm excited about this episode.
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    Me too, man, I think
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    I think it's about time
  • 0:41 - 0:43
I think this is a necessary episode
  • 0:43 - 0:46
because I feel like people are really
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    wondering, like,
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    who are you guys?
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    [laughs] Yeah
  • 0:51 - 0:52
Who are you guys to, you know,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
tell us about, uh, how to build the app
  • 0:54 - 0:56
and how to start a company
  • 0:56 - 1:00
and, uh, yeah, how...how to raise money
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    all that stuff, like,
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    who are these guys?
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    and, you know,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
why have they created this podcast?
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    because, hey,
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    there's like thousands
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    of podcasts out there
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    like, everyday,
someone's coming up with a new podcast
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    [laughter]
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    Truth
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    You know, everybody coming up
    with new podcasts
  • 1:18 - 1:19
But, what's different about this podcast?
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    I honestly can't say that
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    there's anything different about this
    podcast
  • 1:23 - 1:25
But I can tell you that
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    this podcast was created
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    it was created because
we really wanted to help people
  • 1:29 - 1:32
Everything you just said is right on
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    right on point
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    so yeah
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    and
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    we've been focused so much
  • 1:36 - 1:39
on figuring out how we can add value for
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    non-technical technologists
  • 1:42 - 1:45
who had that urging itch to, you know
  • 1:45 - 1:47
create a...a app or work on a startup
  • 1:47 - 1:50
and we've just been so focused on, like
  • 1:50 - 1:52
and, I'm happy to take a step back
  • 1:52 - 1:55
and to share our story a little bit
  • 1:55 - 1:58
and how this space within technology
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    is so exciting
  • 2:00 - 2:02
and you have so much to leverage
  • 2:02 - 2:04
from where you're, where you're at today
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    because Tony and myself,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
we, we were in those shoes before
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    no technology experience,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
and found ourselves in an environment now
  • 2:14 - 2:17
where we can teach other people
about what we learned in the past
  • 2:17 - 2:19
and how it can help you build your ideas.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    But, I...I'm humbled and excited
  • 2:23 - 2:24
to just be in that position today.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    Yeah, definitely
  • 2:26 - 2:27
You know, one of the things
  • 2:27 - 2:29
that, when you're working on an idea
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    and building on an idea
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    or building a technology startup
  • 2:33 - 2:35
or building any company at all,
  • 2:35 - 2:36
you know the 'why' is very important.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
We want to share with you guys the 'why'
  • 2:38 - 2:42
But we also want to share with you guys
    how.
  • 2:42 - 2:42
    And
  • 2:42 - 2:47
A few other general tips and experiences
  • 2:47 - 2:49
that we've had over the last couple months
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    building and launching a podcast,
  • 2:52 - 2:57
    because neither of us [laughs]
have ever worked on a podcast ever.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
We were definitely listeners of it
  • 2:59 - 3:02
But, creating a podcast was not something
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    that we were familiar with
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    and
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    we literally
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    since we launched this thing
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    have had a thousand downloads.
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    And that's
  • 3:10 - 3:11
And that's why I'm so exciting
  • 3:11 - 3:13
it's because we reached this point
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    where
  • 3:14 - 3:18
we see the vision of where this platform is growing
  • 3:18 - 3:20
and we want to just take the time
  • 3:20 - 3:22
just to connect with our listeners
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    and really pull you in
  • 3:23 - 3:25
and be a part of this
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    of this growth
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    and
  • 3:27 - 3:28
where we're taking this moving forward
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    and
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    we have some really
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    we have something really special
  • 3:34 - 3:34
    for this show too,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
that you gotta wait until the end
  • 3:36 - 3:36
    to listen for
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    because it's going to
  • 3:38 - 3:38
    it's going to be
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    it's going to be important
  • 3:39 - 3:41
for how you can contribute to
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    where we're taking this thing
    moving forward
  • 3:42 - 3:45
and gotta listen to the end
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    to really be a part
  • 3:46 - 3:47
to be a part of that
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    so, yeah
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    it's really cool.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
we haven't done something like this before.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
And, uh, yeah, you gotta wait
    until the end
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    until we get that
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    get to the announcement.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
Yeah man, so, I mean, I think
  • 3:58 - 4:01
You know, if you are tired of the intro,
  • 4:01 - 4:03
let's get to it, man [laughs]
  • 4:03 - 4:05
let's get it to the meat and potatoes.
  • 4:05 - 4:31
    [music]
  • 4:31 - 4:32
If this is the first episode
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    that you ever listen to
  • 4:34 - 4:35
from Innovator's Tribe: Outside the Bubble
  • 4:35 - 4:36
I'm sure you're already asking yourself
  • 4:36 - 4:37
    who are these guys?
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    And don't worry,
  • 4:39 - 4:42
there are some of our very first listeners
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    who probably are asking themselves
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    that question a little bit,
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    because we haven't really explained
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    our background
  • 4:48 - 4:49
and just, how we got to this point.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
And so, I'm happy to, you know,
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    really share that story now.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
And it kind of goes way back
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    to, um, our college days,
  • 4:57 - 5:01
because Tony and I went to the same
    university
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    back in Chicago
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    and the polyuniversity
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    at that's when
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    I met this guy.
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    I was like:
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    "You know what?
  • 5:07 - 5:08
He seems to be pretty smart.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    He seems to, you know,
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    have his stuff together."
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    and it's kind of funny,
  • 5:12 - 5:14
like, I'm not sure if he remembers this,
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    but we were driving somewhere
  • 5:16 - 5:18
and he told me that he,
  • 5:18 - 5:18
    he said, "Amar,
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    like, I don't know when
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    but at some point,
  • 5:21 - 5:23
we're going to be building a
    business together."
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    And, we said this
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    when we were in school
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    and it's kind of funny
  • 5:26 - 5:28
to see it actually come to life today, but,
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    Yeah that's crazy
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    that's crazy,
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    I really don't remember that.
  • 5:32 - 5:36
    [laughs]
  • Not Synced
    Yeah man, yeah [laughs]
  • Not Synced
    Those are
  • Not Synced
    Those are the damn lines
  • Not Synced
    I don't know
  • Not Synced
We were coming from a party
  • Not Synced
    or something like that
  • Not Synced
    [laughs] yeah
  • Not Synced
    Uh, but, you know
  • Not Synced
    it's crazy because
  • Not Synced
    you know,
  • Not Synced
    fast forward however many years
  • Not Synced
    you know, here we are
  • Not Synced
    you know, building something
  • Not Synced
and you know, I think it's interesting
  • Not Synced
    because, you know
  • Not Synced
    this definitely was not
  • Not Synced
    the first idea
  • Not Synced
that we had a conversation about
  • Not Synced
    on working on something together
  • Not Synced
but it just kind of made sense
  • Not Synced
just based off of our own
    personal experiences
  • Not Synced
    building our own technologu start-ups
  • Not Synced
and working on our own ideas
  • Not Synced
    yeah
    and
  • Not Synced
    eventually kind of coming together
  • Not Synced
    to work on something
  • Not Synced
    that we felt would really
  • Not Synced
you know, not only, you know, highlight
  • Not Synced
    start-up, uh, entrepreneurs and
  • Not Synced
    start-up founders
  • Not Synced
but really allow us to share
    our own experiences
  • Not Synced
as people who are not only entrepreneurs
  • Not Synced
    and start-up founders
  • Not Synced
    but also people who actually
  • Not Synced
    work within product development
  • Not Synced
    and product management
  • Not Synced
    at very large,
    multi-million dollar companies
  • Not Synced
    where we have literally
  • Not Synced
you know, have built web applications
  • Not Synced
    have built mobile applications
  • Not Synced
that, you know, hundreds of thousands
  • Not Synced
if not millions of people have touched
  • Not Synced
or used over the last few years.
  • Not Synced
I know where I want to start
    this story right now,
  • Not Synced
    this is back when
  • Not Synced
    when I first entered into
    corporate America
  • Not Synced
    I started into that field
  • Not Synced
knowing that I had an itching
    to build a web application
  • Not Synced
and by this point Toye was
    already in Chicago
  • Not Synced
in accelorator, working on his start-up
  • Not Synced
    called "Good.gov"
  • Not Synced
    and I was...
    Goodgov.co
  • Not Synced
    [laughs] Goodgov.co
  • Not Synced
Aw, you just, you just need
to bust my chops like that
  • Not Synced
    Ok, ok, but yeah
  • Not Synced
He was working on his start-up
  • Not Synced
    Back in Chicago
  • Not Synced
that I clearly forgot the name of.
  • Not Synced
    But
  • Not Synced
    I was learning through him
  • Not Synced
    through that experience of
  • Not Synced
just listening to him talk about
  • Not Synced
    how he was itneracting with
  • Not Synced
    investors and
  • Not Synced
    to how he was
working on getting his prototype together
  • Not Synced
    and connecting with customers
  • Not Synced
and I was seeing him in action
  • Not Synced
and watching him craft his idea
  • Not Synced
    into an actual business
  • Not Synced
    and so
  • Not Synced
like I was taking that back
    into figuring out
  • Not Synced
    "Ok, I have this idea
