Fashion Designer / Creative Director of Nellie Partow | Nellie Partow | TEDxMarthasVineyard
-
0:13 - 0:14Thank you guys so much.
-
0:14 - 0:17My name is Nellie Partow.
-
0:17 - 0:21I'm a fashion designer,
based out of New York City. -
0:22 - 0:26I'm here today to talk a little bit
about the journey of life, -
0:26 - 0:31and share a little bit about
my experiences in a creative field, -
0:31 - 0:34and a little bit about some experiences
I've had in my life, -
0:34 - 0:37and hopefully can give you guys
-
0:37 - 0:39some insight onto what I've learned.
-
0:39 - 0:42I do have a couple of questions
for the audience, -
0:42 - 0:44if I can get a raise of hands --
-
0:44 - 0:48How many people
are currently living their dream? -
0:49 - 0:51That's impressive.
-
0:51 - 0:53That's amazing.
-
0:53 - 0:56And how many people
are working towards a dream? -
0:56 - 0:59OK, incredible, me too.
-
0:59 - 1:03Well, I'd like to share a little bit
about my dream, -
1:03 - 1:08and how I became working
in the field of the fashion industry. -
1:08 - 1:11I was really young, I was 8 years old.
-
1:11 - 1:15I was fortunate to know
exactly what I wanted to pursue -
1:16 - 1:19and fell in love with design,
-
1:19 - 1:23and the creativity behind it,
the craft that goes into it, -
1:23 - 1:26and all the details and the elements
-
1:26 - 1:29that really define
being a fashion designer. -
1:30 - 1:34So I made sure that I pursued
absolutely everything I could -
1:34 - 1:37to make this dream come true.
-
1:37 - 1:39And knowing that I wanted
to start my own label, -
1:39 - 1:42I made sure I went to business school,
-
1:42 - 1:45and got a degree in business management
-
1:45 - 1:49in order to know how to run
and operate my own company. -
1:50 - 1:53After graduating from business school,
-
1:53 - 1:57I ended up going to
Parsons School of Design in New York. -
1:57 - 1:59And while I was at Parsons,
-
1:59 - 2:04I was fortunate to have the experience
to work at Donna Karan. -
2:04 - 2:06And upon graduation,
-
2:06 - 2:10I landed my first position
designing for Calvin Klein. -
2:11 - 2:14And after Calvin Klein, I was fortunate
-
2:14 - 2:17and had the opportunity
to work with John Varvatos. -
2:17 - 2:22And after about 10 years
of design experience in the industry, -
2:22 - 2:25I decided to take the plunge
and start my own company. -
2:25 - 2:28It was an incredible experience.
-
2:29 - 2:33So about little over 3 years ago now,
I started my own label. -
2:34 - 2:39And I have an interesting hobby
that I had along this journey. -
2:40 - 2:43I'm also a competitive boxer.
-
2:43 - 2:47And a little bit about that story,
because people find it quite interesting. -
2:47 - 2:51I was fifteen years old
and always loved sports. -
2:51 - 2:54But wanted to be athletic --
-
2:54 - 2:56didn't like going to the gym.
-
2:56 - 2:59So, I walked pass a boxing gym
-
2:59 - 3:02and thought this could be
an interesting workout. -
3:02 - 3:06I didn't know that I was walking
into Team USA's doors. -
3:07 - 3:10And the head trainer
pulled me aside there and said, -
3:10 - 3:13within a month of training there,
he said, -
3:13 - 3:16"You have what it takes to be a fighter."
-
3:16 - 3:19And I thought it was crazy,
I knew my mom would kill me, -
3:19 - 3:23and I said, "No way,
I don't even want to get hit in the face. -
3:23 - 3:26That just does not sound
interesting to me at all." -
3:26 - 3:29And he said OK.
We went to some live fights. -
3:29 - 3:30He took me to some live fights.
-
3:30 - 3:32It's as if he knew what he was doing,
-
3:32 - 3:35I completely fell in love with the sport.
-
3:35 - 3:37And so within a couple of months,
-
3:37 - 3:40I was in the ring
in Compton in Los Angeles -
3:41 - 3:44with my parents watching,
and I started fighting. -
3:45 - 3:47It was a hobby of mine
-
3:47 - 3:51that I have continuously lived
throughout my design career. -
3:52 - 3:55And one defining moment for me
was in 2007, -
3:56 - 3:59I fought in Madison Square Garden
-
3:59 - 4:01for the New York Daily News
-
4:02 - 4:05Golden Gloves Championship Title.
-
4:05 - 4:08That was an incredible
defining moment for me. -
4:08 - 4:10I'll never forget.
-
4:10 - 4:13I was getting my hand wrapped;
I was extremely nervous -- -
4:13 - 4:16pretty much on the same page
as I am right now. -
4:16 - 4:20And my heart was pounding,
I was getting excited, -
4:20 - 4:22and I was trying to get my head
-
4:22 - 4:24in the mind frame
of getting into the ring. -
4:24 - 4:26My trainer was wrapping my hands.
-
4:26 - 4:30And this is something that I had done
many fights before. -
4:31 - 4:34And he pulled me on the side
before we walked out and he said, -
4:34 - 4:37"I just want you to know one thing:
-
4:37 - 4:42win, lose, none of this matters,
unless you are genuinely having fun." -
4:42 - 4:46When I wallked out into the ring,
it was an incredible moment for me. -
4:46 - 4:48I won the title that night,
-
4:48 - 4:52but I walked away
with a far more enriching lesson. -
4:55 - 4:59I realized that it's not about winning
a title -
4:59 - 5:03or making it in this career
that I've dreamed about for so long. -
5:04 - 5:07It's really about the measure of joy
that we have along the way -
5:07 - 5:09throughout this entire process.
-
5:09 - 5:12I think as human beings
we get so caught up -
5:12 - 5:15in trying to get to these end points,
-
5:15 - 5:18whether it's with our career,
or with finances, -
5:18 - 5:21or with personal goals
that we put on ourselves, -
5:21 - 5:25and we tend to forget to enjoy the process
-
5:25 - 5:29and to really live
and to not constanly measure ourselves -
5:29 - 5:32by where we are at
and where we want to be. -
5:32 - 5:36So I think the true creative process
and the true beauty of life -
5:36 - 5:39is really being able
to enjoy these moments. -
5:40 - 5:43So I hope that on some way
I'm able to send that message -
5:45 - 5:49that I know all know,
but so easily forget, including myself. -
5:50 - 5:53And I hope that that helps.
-
5:53 - 5:56Now I'm going to ask somebody
from the audience -
5:56 - 5:58to come up so we can do
three rounds of sparring. -
5:58 - 6:01So I need a volunteer.
(Laughter) -
6:01 - 6:02I'm just kidding.
-
6:02 - 6:04Thank you guys so much.
-
6:04 - 6:07I really appreciate you taking the time
to listen to me today. -
6:07 - 6:08I appreciate it.
-
6:08 - 6:10(Applause)
