Fashion Designer / Creative Director of Nellie Partow | Nellie Partow | TEDxMarthasVineyard

  • 0:13 - 0:14
    Thank you guys so much.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    My name is Nellie Partow.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    I'm a fashion designer,
based out of New York City.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
I'm here today to talk a little bit
    about the journey of life,
  • 0:26 - 0:31
and share a little bit about
my experiences in a creative field,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
and a little bit about some experiences
    I've had in my life,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
and hopefully can give you guys
  • 0:37 - 0:39
some insight onto what I've learned.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
I do have a couple of questions
    for the audience,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
if I can get a raise of hands --
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    How many people
    are currently living their dream?
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    That's impressive.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    That's amazing.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    And how many people
    are working towards a dream?
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    OK, incredible, me too.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
Well, I'd like to share a little bit
    about my dream,
  • 1:03 - 1:08
    and how I became working
in the field of the fashion industry.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
I was really young, I was 8 years old.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    I was fortunate to know
exactly what I wanted to pursue
  • 1:16 - 1:19
and fell in love with design,
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    and the creativity behind it,
the craft that goes into it,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
and all the details and the elements
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    that really define
    being a fashion designer.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
So I made sure that I pursued
    absolutely everything I could
  • 1:34 - 1:37
to make this dream come true.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    And knowing that I wanted
    to start my own label,
  • 1:39 - 1:42
I made sure I went to business school,
  • 1:42 - 1:45
and got a degree in business management
  • 1:45 - 1:49
in order to know how to run
    and operate my own company.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    After graduating from business school,
  • 1:53 - 1:57
    I ended up going to
Parsons School of Design in New York.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
And while I was at Parsons,
  • 1:59 - 2:04
I was fortunate to have the experience
    to work at Donna Karan.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    And upon graduation,
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    I landed my first position
    designing for Calvin Klein.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
And after Calvin Klein, I was fortunate
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    and had the opportunity
    to work with John Varvatos.
  • 2:17 - 2:22
    And after about 10 years
of design experience in the industry,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
I decided to take the plunge
    and start my own company.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    It was an incredible experience.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
So about little over 3 years ago now,
    I started my own label.
  • 2:34 - 2:39
And I have an interesting hobby
that I had along this journey.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    I'm also a competitive boxer.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
And a little bit about that story,
because people find it quite interesting.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
    I was fifteen years old
    and always loved sports.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
But wanted to be athletic --
  • 2:54 - 2:56
didn't like going to the gym.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
So, I walked pass a boxing gym
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    and thought this could be
    an interesting workout.
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    I didn't know that I was walking
    into Team USA's doors.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    And the head trainer
pulled me aside there and said,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
within a month of training there,
    he said,
  • 3:13 - 3:16
"You have what it takes to be a fighter."
  • 3:16 - 3:19
And I thought it was crazy,
I knew my mom would kill me,
  • 3:19 - 3:23
    and I said, "No way,
I don't even want to get hit in the face.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    That just does not sound
    interesting to me at all."
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    And he said OK.
We went to some live fights.
  • 3:29 - 3:30
He took me to some live fights.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
It's as if he knew what he was doing,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
I completely fell in love with the sport.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
And so within a couple of months,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    I was in the ring
    in Compton in Los Angeles
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    with my parents watching,
    and I started fighting.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
It was a hobby of mine
  • 3:47 - 3:51
    that I have continuously lived
    throughout my design career.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
And one defining moment for me
    was in 2007,
  • 3:56 - 3:59
I fought in Madison Square Garden
  • 3:59 - 4:01
for the New York Daily News
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    Golden Gloves Championship Title.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    That was an incredible
    defining moment for me.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    I'll never forget.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    I was getting my hand wrapped;
    I was extremely nervous --
  • 4:13 - 4:16
pretty much on the same page
    as I am right now.
  • 4:16 - 4:20
    And my heart was pounding,
    I was getting excited,
  • 4:20 - 4:22
and I was trying to get my head
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    in the mind frame
    of getting into the ring.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
My trainer was wrapping my hands.
  • 4:26 - 4:30
And this is something that I had done
    many fights before.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
And he pulled me on the side
before we walked out and he said,
  • 4:34 - 4:37
"I just want you to know one thing:
  • 4:37 - 4:42
win, lose, none of this matters,
unless you are genuinely having fun."
  • 4:42 - 4:46
When I wallked out into the ring,
it was an incredible moment for me.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
I won the title that night,
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    but I walked away
with a far more enriching lesson.
  • 4:55 - 4:59
I realized that it's not about winning
    a title
  • 4:59 - 5:03
or making it in this career
that I've dreamed about for so long.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
It's really about the measure of joy
that we have along the way
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    throughout this entire process.
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    I think as human beings
    we get so caught up
  • 5:12 - 5:15
in trying to get to these end points,
  • 5:15 - 5:18
    whether it's with our career,
    or with finances,
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    or with personal goals
    that we put on ourselves,
  • 5:21 - 5:25
and we tend to forget to enjoy the process
  • 5:25 - 5:29
    and to really live
and to not constanly measure ourselves
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    by where we are at
and where we want to be.
  • 5:32 - 5:36
So I think the true creative process
and the true beauty of life
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    is really being able
    to enjoy these moments.
  • 5:40 - 5:43
So I hope that on some way
I'm able to send that message
  • 5:45 - 5:49
    that I know all know,
but so easily forget, including myself.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
And I hope that that helps.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
Now I'm going to ask somebody
    from the audience
  • 5:56 - 5:58
to come up so we can do
    three rounds of sparring.
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    So I need a volunteer.
    (Laughter)
  • 6:01 - 6:02
    I'm just kidding.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    Thank you guys so much.
  • 6:04 - 6:07
I really appreciate you taking the time
    to listen to me today.
  • 6:07 - 6:08
    I appreciate it.
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    (Applause)
