Effective and Safer 3D Print Smoothing with Epoxy not Acetone 3DBurn Ep 4

  • 0:00 - 0:04
So I wanted to find a method of smoothing my 3d models without using acetone.
  • 0:04 - 0:08
So, I did a little bit a research and
I think of found the perfect method
  • 0:08 - 0:12
Stick around to see how you can smooth
    your 3d prints
  • 0:18 - 0:21
Okay. So here we have the Darth Vader Melted Mask from one of my previous videos.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
You can check that out from the link in
the description below or from a little
  • 0:25 - 0:27
I up in the top right hand corner.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
What you'll notice is that the lines aren't
very smooth at all and are very prominent
  • 0:30 - 0:36
So what we will do is grab the little
plastic container and our Z-Poxy PT 39
  • 0:36 - 0:41
    resin
  • 0:41 - 0:44
Now I'm going to eye-ball it here and
  • 0:44 - 0:51
we'll pour some into the plastic container
  • 0:55 - 0:57
and as you can see there that's the
    clear resin
  • 0:57 - 1:01
ready to go! Now the next step is we need
    to add the hardener
  • 1:01 - 1:07
    to complete the epoxy.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
So once again I'm eye-balling it here and
  • 1:10 - 1:14
    there's the hardener.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
Now I've sped up this footage but this is me mixing in the hardener and the resin together
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    so they react.
  • 1:22 - 1:27
Now you can see that the mixture is very
cloudy and it will eventually go clear
  • 1:27 - 1:32
once it goes on to the model itself.
  • 1:32 - 1:38
So what we'll do is we'll grab out trusty
    paintbrush
  • 1:38 - 1:41
and start applying the Z-Poxy to our Darth Vader Melted Mask model.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    Let's start the time-lapse footage!
  • 1:49 - 1:54
Okay so while I'm applying the epoxy here I'll tell you a little bit about the product. So it's
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    from a company called Zap
  • 1:55 - 1:59
and the exact name the product is the
    S-Poxy
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    PT-39 and its
  • 2:02 - 2:05
quoted as being a thirty minute
    solution.
  • 2:05 - 2:11
So, for me though, I would
definitely leave it for 12 hours because
  • 2:11 - 2:14
I just don't see it setting any time
    soon than that.
  • 2:14 - 2:19
Now this is a good alternative to
acetone smoothing as well as another
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    product out there called
  • 2:21 - 2:25
XTC 3D from a company called
    Smooth-On.
  • 2:25 - 2:31
I picked this particular one up off
eBay and I paid about thirty one dollars
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    Australian
  • 2:32 - 2:36
and you can find this overseas as well
so if you living in the US or Canada
  • 2:36 - 2:41
you'll be able to purchase this product
as well. I'll just pop a picture of the box up on
  • 2:41 - 2:43
the screen so you can see it.
  • 2:43 - 2:49
And there it is. This is the very first
time I've used the product as well.
  • 2:49 - 2:54
So what you're seeing here is my first
attempt and I i think it really shows
  • 2:54 - 2:58
for beginner at least anyway, how a first
    attempt could actually turn out.
  • 2:58 - 3:03
Now with a little bit more practice, I
know I can do a better job of this in
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    the future, so
  • 3:04 - 3:08
for everyone watching don't judge me on
this. This is just my first time.
  • 3:08 - 3:13
So after all that rambling let's have a
look and see what the final product
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    actually looks like
  • 3:14 - 3:18
after its been sitting for about 12 hours.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
After all that awesome Time Lapse footage , here we go!
  • 3:21 - 3:25
Now you'll see it's really nice and smooth and
  • 3:25 - 3:29
all those ugly lines from before are all
    gone. Awesome!
  • 3:29 - 3:33
Now this is was my first time using the Z-Poxy solution, so
  • 3:33 - 3:37
I ran into a few issues an I thought I would discuss them in like a
  • 3:37 - 3:42
top 10 countdown things not to do. So here we go!
  • 3:42 - 3:46
Number Ten! Make sure you do this in a
    well-ventilated area because even though
  • 3:46 - 3:48
it says that there is no odours,
  • 3:48 - 3:51
it does get quite fumey, so
  • 3:51 - 3:56
make sure you are definitely in a
    well-ventilated area. Number Nine!
  • 3:56 - 4:00
Okay, so these two things here are you
    most important so
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    no matter what wear gloves.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
This stuff is an epoxy so it's just
    like super glue.
  • 4:06 - 4:11
and we'll stick your hands site what ever
you do, just make sure you wear gloves.
  • 4:11 - 4:16
Number Eight! Make sure you have the right tools for the job so in this case make
  • 4:16 - 4:19
sure you've got the right size brushes
    for the right size application.
  • 4:19 - 4:24
In this example I would have used a finer brush for the more intricate
  • 4:24 - 4:25
    details inside the
  • 4:25 - 4:29
model and on the outside I would have
used probably a slightly bigger brush
  • 4:29 - 4:34
Number Seven! Make sure you've got some Isoprpyl
  • 4:34 - 4:38
Alcohol handy for rinsing your brushes and the container as well.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
Because it will stick to it and if you
    don't get rid of it
  • 4:41 - 4:44
it'll just be lumpy mass. Number Six!
  • 4:44 - 4:48
If you don't want your 3d model to stick
    to your desk or table
  • 4:48 - 4:52
after you apply the Z-Poxy solution I would make sure you put something underneath it
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    like
  • 4:53 - 4:56
a placemat or some baking paper.
  • 4:56 - 5:02
Number Five! Whatever you do don't pick up your model for at least I would say 12
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    hours
  • 5:03 - 5:07
I did mine in the first hour or two and I
did leave some finger prints on the
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    model itself
  • 5:08 - 5:12
you can see a right here and even though it doesn't really distract from it much
  • 5:12 - 5:16
I think that it looks a little bit unprofessional
  • 5:16 - 5:21
Number Four! One of things that it does say on the Z-Poxy bottles
  • 5:21 - 5:25
is to make sure you puncture the top of
    the bottle.
  • 5:25 - 5:28
What I did instead is I chopped three
    millimeters off the top
  • 5:28 - 5:33
and now I find the solution comes out a
lot easier. Before it was like a really
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    really thick syrup
  • 5:34 - 5:38
that was just so hard to squeeze out. Now, it just pours out!
  • 5:38 - 5:43
Number Three! One of the other things that I should have done
  • 5:43 - 5:48
is attach the model to some sort of stand.
  • 5:48 - 5:52
with double-sided tape or blue TAC. Now the reason I should have done this
  • 5:52 - 5:54
is because when you get to the edges
  • 5:54 - 5:59
it gets really hard to apply it smoothly
  • 5:59 - 6:02
and also if you put it on paper, that's
    what it looks like.
  • 6:02 - 6:07
Number Two! Now this is definitely
    something to look out for.
  • 6:07 - 6:11
Next time when I was doing something
like this with all the intricate spaces
  • 6:11 - 6:12
    in here,
  • 6:12 - 6:15
I would start here first instead of starting
    on the outside.
  • 6:15 - 6:19
Reason being is that you can get into
all the fine places without having to
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    worry about moving the model
  • 6:20 - 6:24
too much and you can also tip it up on
    its side.
  • 6:24 - 6:29
Hold it there. No problems whatsoever! You can see into the crevices a lot better
  • 6:29 - 6:35
where as if you do the outside first all
this stuff in here is a lot harder to get to
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    which is what I found.
  • 6:36 - 6:40
So starting here first, ending here.
  • 6:40 - 6:45
Number One.So this is probably one of
the most important tips that I've got
  • 6:45 - 6:45
    for you.
  • 6:45 - 6:50
When you get to your 3d model, try not to
    lather it on
  • 6:50 - 6:53
too thick. If you have a look around his
mouth he looks like a drooling
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    Bulldog.
  • 6:54 - 6:59
Now while that looks cool it's not the
effect that I was going for this
  • 6:59 - 7:00
    model so
  • 7:00 - 7:03
next time I would just put it on.... not
    thick
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    but not too thin either.
  • 7:06 - 7:10
That's it for another episode of 3D Burn.
I really hope you enjoyed it.
