Grassroots Wet'suwet'en Call out for Support
-
0:04 - 0:06Hi, my name is Toghestiy,
-
0:06 - 0:10I come from the Wet'suwet'en Nation which is in north central British Columbia.
-
0:10 - 0:13We have an ongoing camp up in our territory
-
0:13 - 0:16to stop all the pipelines from comin' through our lands.
-
0:16 - 0:22I am one of many people who represent the grassroots population of the Wet'suwet'en people.
-
0:22 - 0:26We've been fighting pipelines since we first heard about them, probably about 8 years ago,
-
0:26 - 0:29and we've been actively fighting over the last 4 years.
-
0:29 - 0:32We've held many camps up in our territories.
-
0:32 - 0:37At present we have a cabin that's built directly in line with the proposed pipelines.
-
0:37 - 0:39If these pipelines come in through our territories,
-
0:39 - 0:40one of the biggest threats that we face
-
0:40 - 0:45is the possibility of a 3 kilometre wide right-of-way
-
0:45 - 0:49cutting through our territories all the way to Kitimat.
-
0:49 - 0:51The reason why we're really upset about this
-
0:51 - 0:54is because the proposed right-of-way and the proposed pipelines
-
0:54 - 0:59are proposing to pass through unceded territories
-
0:59 - 1:03which are the spawning grounds, or the birthplace, of our salmon.
-
1:03 - 1:04We need to protect these places
-
1:04 - 1:10because it's something that's important for not just Wet'suwet'en people, but for all people.
-
1:10 - 1:14If we allow one pipeline in, the rest of the pipelines will soon follow.
-
1:14 - 1:15And we can't allow that to happen.
-
1:15 - 1:16We can't take that risk.
-
1:16 - 1:19No tankers. No pipelines. At all.
-
1:20 - 1:22We have an ongoing camp up in northern, north central BC.
-
1:22 - 1:26People are interested in helping us out, by all means, get a hold of us at
-
1:26 - 1:31http://unistotencamp.wordpress.com/
-
1:31 - 1:34It's a website that we have set up for our camp.
-
1:34 - 1:37All of our contact information is on there.
-
1:37 - 1:40We also have a facebook site called We Support The Unis'tot'en and Grassroots Wet'suwet'en
-
1:40 - 1:42[ http://www.facebook.com/groups/127291627330097/ ]
-
1:42 - 1:44I think it's really important that people become involved in this type of stuff
-
1:44 - 1:47because if we don't, nobody will,
-
1:47 - 1:52and you have to act to mobilize yourselves in order to get change happening on the ground here.
-
1:52 - 1:56So, a call out to everybody: come and support us.
-
1:56 - 1:57We have an ongoing camp,
-
1:57 - 2:01we're in need of supplies, food, whatever you can provide to us.
-
2:01 - 2:04We're there, and we're there to protect our lands,
-
2:04 - 2:07we have a lot of people that are coming out to our camp,
-
2:07 - 2:09and they're in need of a lot of those things as well,
-
2:09 - 2:11so please support us.
-
2:11 - 2:12Misiyh.

- Grassroots Wet'suwet'en Call out for Support

The Unis'tot'en are a clan of the Wet'suwet'en people. They have not given consent for pipeline construction on their unceded territory, which the Pacific Trails Pipeline contractors require under the UN's declaration of FPIC. (Free Prior & Informed Consent)
http://www.facebook.com/groups/127291627330097/
Logging of the pipeline route on Wet'suwet'en territory has begun and crews trying to start construction camps have been informed they are trespassing and left. The Unis'tot'en are asking for allies to help in any way they can to support their ongoing resistance to resource companies, who are operating without concern for democratic procedures and effectively outside the law.
