Gang Life in Baltimore | The New York Times l Almost Whole
-
0:03 - 0:08Everything is a fight. Everything
is a fight. Everything is a fight. -
0:08 - 0:10No one knows the feeling of love here.
-
0:10 - 0:15Everybody's been being mistreated
for so long that love is just unheard of. -
0:16 - 0:20Everyday is just the thought of:
"Am I gonna make it back home tonight?" -
0:20 - 0:22"Am I gonna make it back home tonight?"
-
0:22 - 0:24That's a crazy thought to deal with like...
-
0:24 - 0:29...and just our emotions are just balled up
inside of us. -
0:29 - 0:33We're angry, we're angry and
not at anyone in particular... -
0:33 - 0:35...just coming out angry.
-
0:39 - 0:41Since I was eleven,
I've been getting locked up. -
0:41 - 0:43I'm 25 now. Every year since I was eleven.
-
0:43 - 0:46Central Booking was the worst place
I've ever been. -
0:46 - 0:49It's overpopulated,
non-working facilities, -
0:49 - 0:52you got inmates sleeping
over top of each other. -
0:52 - 0:54There's been people who'd ever protest.
-
0:54 - 0:56And Monday, they were arrested.
They still not let go. -
0:57 - 0:59And it's just a mess, dirty, filthy...
-
0:59 - 1:02Even though they are criminals,
they're still people... -
1:02 - 1:04...and we don't need to treat them
like animals, -
1:04 - 1:07but they are caged in like animals
down there. -
1:10 - 1:12Yeah. I really am kind of nervous
about going down here, you know. -
1:12 - 1:13Why are you nervous?
-
1:14 - 1:15Because I don't like seeing the building.
-
1:17 - 1:18I hate going down here.
-
1:19 - 1:22Sure. I just hope everybody comes out.
-
1:23 - 1:24I want everybody to come so bad.
-
1:24 - 1:26I just don't want it to be a pee-pee,
you know? -
1:26 - 1:29There's gonna be a lot of us.
-
1:31 - 1:32Everybody I talked to said
they're coming out. -
1:32 - 1:35I mean, we should call it a family,
black gorilla family. -
1:35 - 1:38And we all spring out the Black Panthers.
-
1:38 - 1:42You got some people that perceive it
as a gang because they don't understand. -
1:42 - 1:44People fear things they don't understand.
-
1:44 - 1:48So their first thing is to say,
"All right. They are gang. -
1:48 - 1:49They're doing criminal activities."
-
1:50 - 1:52I've been like the sore thumb here.
-
1:52 - 1:54When I was younger,
I was more like a nerd. -
1:54 - 1:57I liked to read Harry Potter.
It was my favorite book. -
1:57 - 2:02And I was picked on when I was younger...
-
2:03 - 2:04...cause I stuck out.
-
2:04 - 2:06I was a little bit smarter
than everybody else. -
2:06 - 2:09So I found myself dumbing
myself down to fit in. -
2:10 - 2:13My last current charge is that I've been
in full violations of probation... -
2:15 - 2:19...for charges that I court in 2014...
-
2:19 - 2:21...dealing with my children's mother.
-
2:22 - 2:25Second degree assault,
I got plead guilty to that. -
2:27 - 2:28Just to hurry up and get out of jail.
-
2:28 - 2:31Put your hands up.
-
2:31 - 2:33(Shouting)
Already. -
2:33 - 2:34Already.
-
2:34 - 2:35"Already."
-
2:37 - 2:39Ya'll gonna go home soon, too.
-
2:39 - 2:44"This is an incredible day for those of us who
have been protesting for the last two weeks. -
2:45 - 2:46It is a sigh of relief for us.
-
2:47 - 2:51A day of joy and
a day of a pleasant surprise." -
2:51 - 2:53"It was only grown from dust...
-
2:53 - 2:55...as the newest residents they are,
-
2:55 - 2:59they'll be exchanging blue uniforms
for orange ones." -
3:02 - 3:05Indescribable, indescribable.
-
3:05 - 3:07I just felt goosebumps everywhere.
-
3:09 - 3:12I just felt good to know that somebody's
at least being charged. -
3:12 - 3:14Somebody's at least
being held accountable -
3:14 - 3:16I think the whole city shared
that feeling... -
3:16 - 3:18...Goosebumps.
-
3:18 - 3:20"Colored have justice!"
-
3:20 - 3:21It begins with bridging the gap
-
3:23 - 3:27Bridging the gap to the regular citizens
-
3:28 - 3:31Interviewer "You don't consider yourself
a regular citizen?" -
3:33 - 3:36Hum... and it's crazy that I don't,
it's crazy that I don't. -
3:41 - 3:43I don't know why I don't.
-
3:43 - 3:46But I am a citizen here though.
-
3:46 - 3:48I am a citizen here, I am a citizen here,
-
3:48 - 3:50and I want to be treated like one
-
3:51 - 3:52I definitely want to be treated like one
-
3:53 - 3:56I've always had a feeling that
I was meant to be great. -
3:56 - 3:58"You do have given new energy
to people -
3:58 - 4:01that are people called thugs,
that are people called gangsters -
4:01 - 4:03but you have called them righteous..."
-
4:03 - 4:06I dont like to be seen like my ego is big
-
4:06 - 4:08but there is just something
inside of me that... -
4:08 - 4:09War.
-
4:09 - 4:13(shouting)
-
4:13 - 4:17And finally for once, just being active
with those, I feel whole... -
4:17 - 4:18almost.
-
4:18 - 4:20Almost whole.
