Sekolah Harapan Bangsa (School of Hope)

  • 0:04 - 0:06
    Since the beginning...
  • 0:07 - 0:13
I thought about all the places,
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    especially in Sabah,
  • 0:17 - 0:21
where we could build Indonesian schools.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
So why not, if we could build one Indonesian school in this area of Ulu Kimanis.
  • 0:27 - 0:36
So we can teach children from nearby. Children of Indonesian citizens can learn here.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
A school that is called Tunas Harapan Bangsa.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
So in the beginning, I felt quite sad.
  • 0:46 - 0:57
When I was traveling around and saw children that are still underaged and having to work.
  • 0:57 - 1:02
Why do their parents keep bringing them to the work sites?
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    This has become a problem.
  • 1:07 - 1:19
That was when I thought about how I could find a way to build a school in Ulu Kimanis.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
In the early stages, we had no teachers at all.
  • 1:25 - 1:32
    Maybe the word had spread.
  • 1:32 - 1:38
So many Indonesians who had teaching certificates
  • 1:39 - 1:44
or some degree in education came and applied to become teachers.
  • 1:45 - 1:52
In the beginning, two female teachers and one male teacher applied.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
Meliati Toding, she is behind us at the moment.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    She stayed until now.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
She was one of our pioneers.
  • 2:01 - 2:06
From the time we started this school, it was a private school.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
So the responsibility to cover everything falls with the students' parents.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
We pay RM 500 for this place every month.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
The building's floor is made with 300 bags of cement.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
All of it was donated by Chinese people.
  • 2:25 - 2:32
The parents never had to fork out money, not even one cent, for this school.
  • 2:33 - 2:45
From the foundation made of 300 bags of cement, and all of the wooden walls were sponsored by the Chinese.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
The roof of the entire school was also sponsored by the Chinese.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    It was all free.
  • 2:53 - 2:59
We only waited for parents to send their children to this school.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
They didn't have to lose anything to support this school.
  • 3:07 - 3:11
Mr. Petrus is still trying to get Indonesian migrant workers in Sabah to send their kids to school instead of work.
  • 3:12 - 3:17
There are many such schools in Sabah that still do not receive support from the Indonesian Government.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
