Alan Watts - Life and Music (HD quality)
-
0:19 - 0:21In music, one doesn't make
-
0:21 - 0:23the end of the composition
-
0:23 - 0:25the point of the composition.
-
0:25 - 0:27If that were so, the best conductors
-
0:27 - 0:29would be those who played fastest.
-
0:29 - 0:32And there would be composers
-
0:32 - 0:35who wrote only finales.
-
0:35 - 0:37[laughs] People would go to concerts
-
0:37 - 0:39just to hear one crashing chord--
-
0:39 - 0:43and that's the end [laughs].
-
0:43 - 0:46But, we don't see that as, uh, something
-
0:46 - 0:46brought by our education
-
0:48 - 0:50into our everyday conduct.
-
0:50 - 0:51We've got a system of schooling
-
0:51 - 0:53that gives a completely different impression.
-
0:53 - 0:57It's all graded and what we do is we put the
-
0:57 - 1:00child into the corridor of this grade system
-
1:00 - 1:03with a kind of, "come on kitty kitty kitty"
-
1:03 - 1:06and now you go to kindergarten, you know, and that's a
-
1:06 - 1:07great thing because when you finish that
-
1:07 - 1:11you get into first grade and then, come on,
-
1:11 - 1:13first grade leads to second grade and so on.
-
1:13 - 1:14And then you get out of grade school you got high school
-
1:14 - 1:16and it's revving up--the thing is coming--
-
1:16 - 1:19and then you've got to go to college.
-
1:19 - 1:21And, by jove, then you get into graduate school.
-
1:21 - 1:22And when you're through with graduate school
-
1:22 - 1:25you go out and join the world.
-
1:25 - 1:27And then you get into some racket
-
1:27 - 1:29where you're selling insurance
-
1:29 - 1:31and they've got that quota to make.
-
1:31 - 1:33And you're going to make that.
-
1:33 - 1:34And all the time the thing is coming.
-
1:34 - 1:35It's coming, it's coming --that great thing--
-
1:35 - 1:38the success you're working for.
-
1:38 - 1:40Then when you wake up one day
-
1:40 - 1:41about 40 years old
-
1:41 - 1:43and you say, "My god I've arrived!"
-
1:43 - 1:45"I'm there!"
-
1:45 - 1:47And you don't feel very different
-
1:47 - 1:49from what you've always felt.
-
1:49 - 1:50And there's a slight let down because you feel
-
1:50 - 1:52there's a hoax.
-
1:52 - 1:53And there was a hoax.
-
1:53 - 1:54A dreadful hoax.
-
1:54 - 1:56They made you miss everything
-
1:56 - 1:59We thought of life by analogy with a journey
-
2:00 - 2:01with a pilgrimage
-
2:01 - 2:03which had a serious purpose at the end.
-
2:03 - 2:05And the thing was to get to that end.
-
2:05 - 2:06Success or whatever it is...
-
2:06 - 2:08or maybe heaven after you're dead.
-
2:08 - 2:11But, we missed the point the whole way along.
-
2:11 - 2:13It was a musical thing and you were supposed
-
2:13 - 2:20to sing or to dance while the music was being played.
