    you jack of diamonds
  • 1:20 - 1:24
I know you of old boy,

    I know you of old.
  • 1:29 - 1:34
    You done robbed my pocket,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    you done robbed my pocket
  • 1:40 - 1:45
    of silver and gold, boy,
  • 1:45 - 1:49
    of silver and gold.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    Water Boy,
  • 1:55 - 2:00
    where are you hidin'?
  • 2:01 - 2:04
If you don't come right here,
  • 2:04 - 2:09
I'm gonna tell your pa on you.
  • 2:09 - 2:14
    There ain't no hammer
  • 2:14 - 2:19
    that's on this mountain
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    that ring like mine, boy,
  • 2:24 - 2:29
    that ring like mine.
  • 2:29 - 2:34
I'm gonna bust this rock, boy,
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    from here to Macon.
  • 2:39 - 2:44
All the way to the jail, boy,
  • 2:44 - 2:48
all the way to the jail.
  • 2:49 - 2:56
    Water
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    Boy
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    (Guitar strum)
  • 2:59 - 3:04
    where are you hidin'?
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    (Guitar strum)
  • 3:05 - 3:06
If you don't come right here,
  • 3:06 - 3:08
if you don't come right here,
  • 3:08 - 3:09
if you don't come right here,
  • 3:09 - 3:16
    I'm gonna tell
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    your pa
  • 3:19 - 3:23
    on you.
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    (Guitar strum)
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    (Applause)
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    Thank you.
  • 3:38 - 3:41
That was a song based on
    numerous work songs,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
and it was arranged by Odetta,
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    a hero of mine.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    And this next song, well,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
I do a lot of historical music,
  • 3:50 - 3:52
starting with the Carolina Chocolate Drops
  • 3:52 - 3:54
and continuing on in my solo endeavors.
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    And I believe that knowing
    your history as a musician
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    is super important --
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    it's important as a person,
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    it's important as a country,
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    it's important as a people.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
So I read a lot about where
    the music comes from
  • 4:07 - 4:09
and where this country comes from.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    I've been reading a lot
    about the Civil War
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    and about slavery.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    And it's really tough.
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    You know?
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    It's really tough reading.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    And so as an artist,
what I do with all that emotion,
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    reading these people's stories,
  • 4:20 - 4:22
not just, "Oh, slavery was terrible."
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    Yes, it was.
  • 4:23 - 4:28
    But it's reading individual narratives
of how it was for these people.
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    You know?
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    Then it's like, "Yeah,
    that could've been me."
  • 4:32 - 4:34
And it is people now. You know?
  • 4:34 - 4:35
So what you do with all that emotion
  • 4:35 - 4:37
is you've got to do something with it.
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    As an artist, I write.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
So I wrote a song based on
some of those narratives that I read,
  • 4:41 - 4:44
and it's called, "Come Love Come."
  • 4:44 - 4:46
We're going to do it for you now.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
    (Claps)
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    (Sings) Come love come,
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    the road lies low,
  • 4:58 - 5:02
the way is long and hard, I know.
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    Come love come,
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    the road lies free,
  • 5:05 - 5:08
I'll wait for you in Tennessee.
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    (Music)
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    (Sings) When I was four,
  • 5:23 - 5:28
    my loving mam was cornered
    by the boss's man.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
She turned her head and got struck down,
  • 5:31 - 5:35
they buried her in the cold, cold ground.
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    Come love come,
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    the road lies low,
  • 5:38 - 5:41
the way is long and hard, I know.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    Come love come,
  • 5:43 - 5:44
    the road lies free,
  • 5:44 - 5:47
I'll wait for you in Tennessee.
  • 5:47 - 5:50
    (Music)
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    When I was 12,
  • 5:56 - 5:57
    my father dear
  • 5:57 - 6:01
was strong of arm and free of fear
  • 6:01 - 6:04
until the day he raised his hand,
  • 6:04 - 6:07
then he was sold to Alabama.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    Come love come,
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    the road lies low,
  • 6:11 - 6:14
the way is long and hard, I know.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    Come love come,
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    the road lies free,
  • 6:17 - 6:21
I'll wait for you in Tennessee.
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    (Music)
  • 6:33 - 6:37
When I was 16, found my bloom
  • 6:37 - 6:38
    and found my man,
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    we jumped the broom.
  • 6:40 - 6:43
    We pledged each other
    the rest of our lives
  • 6:43 - 6:46
    and on Saturday nights
    we were man and wife.
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    Come love come,
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    the road lies low,
  • 6:50 - 6:52
the way is long and hard, I know.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    Come love come,
  • 6:55 - 6:56
    the road lies free,
  • 6:56 - 6:59
I'll wait for you in Tennessee.
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    (Music)
  • 7:12 - 7:14
    When I was 18,
  • 7:14 - 7:15
    bugles called
  • 7:15 - 7:18
and boys in blue came o'er the wall.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
I took my chance and followed free,
  • 7:22 - 7:25
they led the way to Tennessee.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    Come love come,
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    the road lies low,
  • 7:28 - 7:31
the way is long and hard, I know.
  • 7:32 - 7:33
    Come love come,
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    the road lies free,
  • 7:35 - 7:38
I'll wait for you in Tennessee.
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    (Music)
  • 7:51 - 7:54
Now here I sit in a tiny shack
  • 7:54 - 7:57
with 13 others at my back.
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    I've sent you word,
  • 7:59 - 8:00
    so all I can do
  • 8:00 - 8:03
is wait and wait and wait and wait
  • 8:03 - 8:08
    and wait
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    and wait for you.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    Come love come,
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    the road lies low,
  • 8:16 - 8:19
the way is long and hard, I know.
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    Come love come,
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    the road lies free,
  • 8:23 - 8:26
I'll wait for you in Tennessee.
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    Come love come,
  • 8:27 - 8:29
    the road lies low,
  • 8:29 - 8:32
the way is long and hard, I know.
  • 8:32 - 8:34
    Come love come,
  • 8:34 - 8:35
    the road lies free,
  • 8:35 - 8:42
I'll wait for you in Tennessee.
  • 8:46 - 8:52
    Oh,
  • 8:52 - 8:57
    oh,
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    oh.
  • 9:00 - 9:06
Whoa ... oh I'll wait for you.
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    I'll wait for you.
  • 9:10 - 9:15
    I'll wait for you
  • 9:15 - 9:17
    I'll wait for you.
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    (Applause)
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    Thank you.
  • 9:33 - 9:37
    So, with the dark
you have to have the light.
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    And in the African-American community,
  • 9:39 - 9:41
it's been the work of many
    hundreds of years
  • 9:41 - 9:43
to find a way to lift ourselves up.
  • 9:43 - 9:48
So I'm going to end with a couple
of tunes from Sister Rosetta Tharpe,
  • 9:48 - 9:51
    one of the more influential
    American music figures
  • 9:51 - 9:53
that most of you probably never heard of.
  • 9:53 - 9:55
If you have, I'm so happy.
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    She's one of the innovators
    of rock 'n' roll guitar,
  • 9:57 - 10:01
and one of the first crossover artists
    from gospel to secular.
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    She's an incredibly important figure,
  • 10:03 - 10:05
and I'm going to talk about her
    whenever I can.
  • 10:05 - 10:07
So these are a couple of her tunes.
  • 10:07 - 10:10
And don't worry -- you're going to get
    your chance to sing.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    (Music)
  • 10:19 - 10:22
    (Sings) Look down, look down
  • 10:22 - 10:25
    that lonesome road
  • 10:25 - 10:28
    before you travel on.
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    Look up, look up
  • 10:32 - 10:35
    and greet your maker,
  • 10:35 - 10:38
    for Gabriel blows his horn.
  • 10:40 - 10:44
    Weary totin' such a load,
  • 10:45 - 10:49
    goin' down that lonesome road.
  • 10:49 - 10:54
    Look down that lonesome road,
  • 10:54 - 10:58
    before you travel on.
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    Look down, look down
  • 11:01 - 11:04
    that lonesome road
  • 11:04 - 11:08
    before you travel on.
  • 11:09 - 11:11
    Look up, look up
  • 11:11 - 11:14
    and greet your maker,
  • 11:14 - 11:18
    for Gabriel blows his horn.
  • 11:19 - 11:23
    Weary totin' such a load,
  • 11:24 - 11:28
    goin' down that lonesome road.
  • 11:28 - 11:31
Look down, look down, look down, look down
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    that lonesome road
  • 11:33 - 11:37
    before you travel on.
  • 11:37 - 11:38
    Up above my head
  • 11:38 - 11:39
    up above my head
  • 11:39 - 11:40
I hear music in the air
  • 11:40 - 11:42
    music in the air.
  • 11:42 - 11:43
    Up above my head
  • 11:43 - 11:44
    up above my head
  • 11:44 - 11:45
I hear music in the air
  • 11:45 - 11:46
I hear music in the air.
  • 11:46 - 11:48
    Up above my head
  • 11:48 - 11:49
    up above my head
  • 11:49 - 11:50
I hear music in the air
  • 11:50 - 11:51
    music in the air
  • 11:51 - 11:52
    and I really do believe
  • 11:52 - 11:54
    I really do believe
  • 11:54 - 11:55
    there's a Heaven somewhere.
  • 11:55 - 11:57
    Up above my head
  • 11:57 - 11:58
    up above my head
  • 11:58 - 11:59
I hear singin' in the air
  • 11:59 - 12:00
    singin' in the air.
  • 12:00 - 12:01
    Up above my head
  • 12:01 - 12:02
    up above my head
  • 12:03 - 12:04
I hear singin' in the air
  • 12:04 - 12:05
I hear singin' in the air.
  • 12:05 - 12:06
    Up above my head
  • 12:06 - 12:07
    up above my head
  • 12:07 - 12:09
I hear singin' in the air
  • 12:09 - 12:10
    singin' in the air
  • 12:10 - 12:11
    and I really do believe
  • 12:11 - 12:12
    I really do believe
  • 12:12 - 12:14
    there's a Heaven somewhere.
  • 12:14 - 12:15
(Speaks) All right now, guitar man!
  • 12:15 - 12:18
    (Guitar music)
  • 12:28 - 12:30
    That's Hubby Jenkins, y'all.
  • 12:33 - 12:34
    (Sings) Up above my head
  • 12:34 - 12:35
    up above my head
  • 12:35 - 12:37
I hear shoutin' in the air
  • 12:37 - 12:38
    shoutin' in the air.
  • 12:38 - 12:39
    Up above my head
  • 12:39 - 12:40
    up above my head
  • 12:40 - 12:41
I hear shoutin' in the air
  • 12:41 - 12:43
I hear shoutin' in the air.
  • 12:43 - 12:44
    Up above my head
  • 12:44 - 12:45
    up above my head
  • 12:45 - 12:47
I hear shoutin' in the air, that's right,
  • 12:47 - 12:49
    and I really do believe
    I really do believe
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    there's a heaven somewhere.
  • 12:51 - 12:53
    (Speaks) All right now,
give me some of that bass.
  • 12:53 - 12:56
    (Bass solo)
  • 13:01 - 13:02
    Yeah!
  • 13:03 - 13:04
    Woo!
  • 13:05 - 13:07
    Jason Sypher on the bass.
  • 13:08 - 13:10
    Jamie Dick on those drums.
  • 13:12 - 13:14
    All right now,
  • 13:14 - 13:15
    I'm running out of time.
  • 13:15 - 13:17
So it's time for y'all to sing.
  • 13:17 - 13:18
    This is the call-and-response.
  • 13:18 - 13:19
    I call, you respond.
  • 13:19 - 13:23
There are so many songs like this,
y'all know how it goes, don't you?
  • 13:23 - 13:24
    You're going to sing along?
  • 13:24 - 13:26
I said, are you going to sing along?
  • 13:26 - 13:27
    Audience members: Yes!
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    Rhiannon Giddens: Here we go!
  • 13:29 - 13:30
    (Sings) Up above my head
  • 13:30 - 13:31
    AM: up above my head
  • 13:31 - 13:33
    RG: music in the air
  • 13:33 - 13:34
    AM: music in the air.
  • 13:34 - 13:35
    RG: up above my head

    AM: up above my head
  • 13:36 - 13:37
    RG: music in the air
  • 13:37 - 13:38

  • 13:45 - 13:47
    there's a heaven somewhere.
  • 13:47 - 13:48
    One more time!
  • 13:48 - 13:49
    Up above my head
  • 13:49 - 13:50
