How blue jeans were invented | Moments of Vision 10 - Jessica Oreck

  • 0:07 - 0:13
    In a Moment of Vision...
  • 0:13 - 0:17
It's the height of the Gold Rush,
    1850s California.
  • 0:17 - 0:22
A young tailor named Jacob Davis notices
    that his gold-mining customers
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    are wearing through pants faster
    than they can patch them.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    In a moment of vision,
  • 0:27 - 0:32
    Davis adds reinforcing metal rivets
    to his pant design,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    strategically placing them
    at points of strain,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    like the corners of pockets
and the base of the fly.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    The enhanced trousers are soon
    in high demand.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
In order to take out a patent on
    the highly successful riveted pant,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    Davis needs a business partner.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    He approaches the supplier
    of his cloth,
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    a dry goods merchant
by the name of Levi Strauss.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    Strauss and Davis begin manufacturing
    pants out of denim,
  • 0:59 - 1:04
and continue to modify the design
    to accommodate their customers.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
It is rumored that the removal
    of the crotch rivet
  • 1:07 - 1:09
was due to a complaint from the miners
  • 1:09 - 1:14
that squatting too near a campfire
    in their typical underwear-free fashion
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    could be painful.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    Jeans continued to be modified
    and diversified over the years,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    eventually becoming
    an everyday fashion item
  • 1:24 - 1:27
for both work and play by the 1960s.
  • 1:27 - 1:34
Today, 96% of American consumers own
at least one, if not many, pairs of jeans.
