Rackstraw Downes: Altri pittori | "Exclusive" | Art21

Episode #166: Filmed in Presidio, Texas in late 2010, painter Rackstraw Downes describes why he views the work of some long-deceased painters to be relevant to his own contemporary practice. Paintings by such artists are shown including Claude Lorrain's "Sunrise" (1646-47), Jacob van Ruisdael's "Wheat Fields" (1670), and J.M.W. Turner's "The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons" (1834-35). Despite not using the same techniques as these painters, Downes seeks out their work because he considers it "useful," "provocative," and "like challenges."

Rackstraw Downes views the act of seeing and the art of representation as culturally taught, with different cultures accepting alternative delineations of the world as realistic. Often painted in a panoramic format, Downes's images evince careful attention to details as well as to broad expanses of their surroundings. Created plein air in locations as diverse as metropolitan New York, rural Maine, and coastal and inland Texas—without resorting to the use of photography—his compositions feature horizons that bend according to the way the eye naturally perceives.

Ovviamente ero molto entusiasta di alcuni pittori,

e, in molti casi, si trattava di artisti vissuti
in epoche completamente diverse dalla mia.

MI piace la frase detta da Picasso:

"Alcuni giovani mi sembrano più vecchi
di certi artisti morti molti secoli fa."

[Ride] Ben detto.

Alcuni di questi artisti scomparsi secoli fa,
e le loro opere, sembrano

assolutamente pertinenti ai tuoi interessi di oggi.
E così li cerchi.

Vai a cercare le loro opere. Ho visitato posti anche molto lontani per vedere mostre di Claude Lorrain,

o di Jacob Van Ruisdael, e Constable, e altri ancora.

Turner l'ho un po' evitato, non pensavo fosse bravo.

Poi, un giorno, stavo cercando di dipingere del fumo e del vapore che usciva da uno stabilimento a Pittsburg.

E ho pensato, "Dio mio, quel Turner era un maestro assoluto del vapore".

Constable disse che c'erano dei Turner meravigliosi

che sembravano fatti di vapore dipinto, proprio così.
È esattamente quello che sono.

Non conosco la tecnica del dipinto di Ruisdael.

Non potrei dipingere un Ruisdael.

Non me ne intendo di osservazione, non lo faccio mai.

Io sono quello che si definisce un pittore diretto.
Uso pezzetti di pittura direttamente sulla tela.

Se non funziona, lo tolgo e riprovo con un altro pezzetto.

Non lascio che si secchi per poi metterci un altro strato sopra, e poi un altro.

Non lavoro in quel modo.

Forse è per questo che non ho
forti sentimenti per quei pittori.

Mi sembrano utili e provocativi.

Per me erano sfide. Ci riesci, riesci a farlo così bene?

Tecnicamente non ho accesso alle loro opere.

Ma posso accedervi attraverso varie cose
che i loro quadri fanno.
