The joy of less | Kim Coupounas | TEDxBoulder
-
0:06 - 0:10I want to take you back
to the winter of 1993. -
0:10 - 0:12My husband and I are living in Boston.
-
0:12 - 0:14We're newly married,
and we're kind of early on -
0:14 - 0:17in our A-type high-octane
business careers. -
0:17 - 0:19So we were working all the time.
-
0:19 - 0:20We didn't have much time for fun,
-
0:20 - 0:25and as avid backpackers and climbers,
we longed for time in nature. -
0:25 - 0:30So hallelujah, we managed to escape
for a long weekend-backpacking trip -
0:30 - 0:33in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
-
0:35 - 0:37We were enchanted
by the notion of meandering -
0:37 - 0:40into this frozen wintry wonderland,
-
0:43 - 0:45breathing in the smell of the pines,
-
0:45 - 0:48feeling the crunch! crunch! crunch!
of the snow beneath our snowshoes, -
0:48 - 0:52and snuggling up
next to a campfire at night. -
0:52 - 0:55So, in preparation for this trip,
-
0:55 - 0:58we bought every winter
camping gizmo and doodad -
0:58 - 1:00our young wallets could afford.
-
1:00 - 1:05So there we were, in this beautiful,
pristine winter wonderland -
1:06 - 1:09with 80 pounds each on our backs.
-
1:09 - 1:11(Laughter)
-
1:11 - 1:15Now, our dream vacation backpacking trip
-
1:15 - 1:17- probably the only one
we were going to get that year - -
1:17 - 1:19turned into a nightmare.
-
1:19 - 1:21We had welts on our shoulders,
blisters on our feet, -
1:21 - 1:24sweat-soaked base layers.
-
1:24 - 1:27We were seduced by the allure of more,
-
1:27 - 1:29and we didn't just have more on our backs,
-
1:29 - 1:32you might say that we were
"more-on" backpackers. -
1:32 - 1:36So after a bunch of trips like that,
we took all of those learnings, -
1:36 - 1:39and my husband and I
founded an outdoor company -
1:39 - 1:42on the basic notion
that when it comes to connection -
1:42 - 1:46in the outdoors and your gear,
less really is more. -
1:46 - 1:50We really had found the key
to fun and freedom in the outdoors, -
1:50 - 1:53and it was simple: go light.
-
1:53 - 1:56So let's talk about the culture of more.
-
1:56 - 2:00When we think about the word 'more,'
we think more money, more sex, -
2:00 - 2:04more friends, more respect,
more success, more power, right? -
2:06 - 2:09So where does all this fascination
with more come from? -
2:09 - 2:13From the rise of industrial capitalism
at the turn of the 20th century. -
2:13 - 2:16Suddenly, mass-produced products
were available to everyone, -
2:16 - 2:20life-enhancing products
that raised the standard of living. -
2:20 - 2:23Suddenly, we had more freedom,
more education, more wealth, -
2:23 - 2:27higher wages and more democracy.
-
2:27 - 2:30But let's talk about some of the things
that also came with that. -
2:30 - 2:34Suddenly, we filled our days
from morning to night -
2:34 - 2:38with no time to breathe,
and we had so many choices. -
2:38 - 2:42As a society, we were consumed
with the consumption of things. -
2:42 - 2:47Now, tell me, why do we need
24 flavors of ranch dressing? -
2:47 - 2:49(Laughter)
-
2:49 - 2:50So is it any wonder
-
2:50 - 2:54what this obsession with more
has brought on a global basis? -
2:54 - 2:57Folks, we're gobbling up the planet,
-
2:57 - 3:00and well, we're not having a heck
of a lot of fun while we're doing it. -
3:00 - 3:03Capitalism is a good thing,
-
3:03 - 3:07but it has lost its way, and so have we.
-
3:09 - 3:11I get the allure of more.
-
3:11 - 3:14I know the power of the dark side.
-
3:15 - 3:19I think to myself how I look
so hot, so powerful, -
3:19 - 3:21and so sexy in those shoes.
-
3:21 - 3:23I've got to have them.
-
3:23 - 3:25So I plunk down my credit card,
-
3:25 - 3:28and I have that immediate rush
of gratification. -
3:28 - 3:30And I take them home
in their fancy packaging -
3:30 - 3:33and I stand in front
of the full length mirror. -
3:33 - 3:34I put them on my feet,
-
3:35 - 3:38and I have that sickening realization
-
3:38 - 3:41of just how much I put on my credit card,
-
3:41 - 3:43and that they freaking hurt my feet!
-
3:43 - 3:45(Laughter)
-
3:47 - 3:50And what's left after that initial rush,
-
3:50 - 3:52but emptiness and pain?
-
3:56 - 3:57Fast forward to 2002,
-
3:57 - 4:00my husband and I are building
an awesome company. -
4:00 - 4:04We have product awards and media hits
coming out of our ears, -
4:04 - 4:05we are rowing internationally,
-
4:05 - 4:09and we are riding this huge wave
of traditional business success, -
4:09 - 4:12but we're working more
than 100 hours a week. -
4:12 - 4:14We're pouring capital in.
-
4:14 - 4:19We're buying ad-buys for a single page
that cost more than 20,000 dollars each. -
4:19 - 4:22We're buying trade show booths
that cost more than a house. -
4:24 - 4:28And you know, all of that
was in the pursuit of more: -
4:28 - 4:33more market share, more growth,
more recognition, more success. -
4:34 - 4:37Can you see the irony
of building a company -
4:37 - 4:41all about less but living all
of your time in the land of more? -
4:43 - 4:45And what did it really get us?
-
4:45 - 4:48It got us less time with each other,
less time with the family, -
4:48 - 4:52less time with friends,
less time in spiritual pursuit, -
4:52 - 4:54less time working out,
and ironically, -
4:54 - 4:56less time in nature.
-
4:59 - 5:02We were running our business
like the "more-on" backpacker. -
5:05 - 5:07I want to be honest and tell you
-
5:07 - 5:09that the seduction of more
led me personally -
5:09 - 5:11down a very, very dark path.
-
5:13 - 5:15I was emotionally,
spiritually, and physically -
5:15 - 5:18so worn out and so out of balance
-
5:18 - 5:23that I spent the next eight years
having five miscarriages, -
5:23 - 5:26three failed in-vitro fertilization rounds
-
5:26 - 5:29and spending a fortune
in Western and Eastern medical treatments. -
5:31 - 5:35Can you imagine seeing
your baby's heartbeat -
5:35 - 5:38at 12 weeks via ultrasound
-
5:39 - 5:42only to find out a few weeks later
that the baby had died in your belly? -
5:52 - 5:55Why are we so afraid of the word 'less'?
-
5:56 - 5:59We think we'll have lack.
We think we'll be judged. -
5:59 - 6:01We think we won't have enough.
-
6:01 - 6:04We think we're worried
what other people will say. -
6:04 - 6:06And all of that is rooted in fear.
-
6:06 - 6:09But good people,
what the heck are we afraid of? -
6:09 - 6:10We are living in a civilization
-
6:10 - 6:14with so much prosperity,
and abundance, and wealth. -
6:16 - 6:23Happiness, when it comes from buying
things and stuff, is fleeting, -
6:23 - 6:25and therefore, an illusion.
-
6:26 - 6:29Let's reframe the word 'less,'
-
6:29 - 6:30'less' doesn't mean lack.
-
6:31 - 6:34'Less' doesn't mean lack.
-
6:34 - 6:38'Less' means less stress,
less anxiety, less anger, -
6:38 - 6:41less worry, and more happiness,
-
6:41 - 6:44joy, connection, and abundance.
-
6:47 - 6:51So, after eight years of fertility
treatments and trying everything, -
6:51 - 6:55everything to try and have a child,
-
6:55 - 6:57I was brought to my knees,
-
7:00 - 7:03and everything in me screamed, "Stop!"
-
7:07 - 7:10So I did. I got quiet.
-
7:10 - 7:13I stopped being the CEO
of the company that I cofounded. -
7:13 - 7:16I stepped off boards,
I eliminated commitments. -
7:16 - 7:20I stopped chasing every notion
I'd been told was my ticket to happiness, -
7:20 - 7:24and I stopped with the attachments,
-
7:24 - 7:27and all of those things
that weren't serving me -
7:27 - 7:31like self-judgment, and blame,
and stress, and worry. -
7:32 - 7:35And after I cleared out
the clutter of my life, -
7:37 - 7:38and I spent time in nature,
-
7:38 - 7:41and I reconnected
with my family and my friends, -
7:41 - 7:44I started to sing again,
and I spent time in prayer. -
7:46 - 7:47This was the result.
-
7:48 - 7:50(Applause)
-
7:57 - 7:58Let's be honest,
-
7:58 - 8:04I have trained and worshipped
at the high altars of more, -
8:06 - 8:12but I know in my bones the abundance
and joy that comes from less. -
8:14 - 8:17Make no doubt, we all have
the power to turn away -
8:17 - 8:21from the dark side
to choose a different path, -
8:22 - 8:27to change the rules of the game,
to reverse the destructive forces -
8:27 - 8:31we have wrought on humanity
and our biosphere. -
8:32 - 8:36I'm in the business
of selling you things, but what if, -
8:37 - 8:41imagine, what if we all
bought fewer things? -
8:41 - 8:43And when we did buy things,
-
8:43 - 8:48we bought from brands and companies
that were aligned with our values? -
8:50 - 8:55What if we trusted and had faith
that on the other side of this wall, -
8:55 - 8:59this illusion, this falsehood of more,
-
8:59 - 9:03is a life of abundance and joy
just waiting for us? -
9:05 - 9:07I want to leave you with a question:
-
9:08 - 9:13What is that abundance, that joy
that your heart aches for, -
9:15 - 9:19and what can you have
less of to make room for it? -
9:19 - 9:20(Applause)
