The joy of less | Kim Coupounas | TEDxBoulder

  • 0:06 - 0:10
I want to take you back
    to the winter of 1993.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
My husband and I are living in Boston.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    We're newly married,
and we're kind of early on
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    in our A-type high-octane
    business careers.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
So we were working all the time.
  • 0:19 - 0:20
We didn't have much time for fun,
  • 0:20 - 0:25
and as avid backpackers and climbers,
we longed for time in nature.
  • 0:25 - 0:30
So hallelujah, we managed to escape
    for a long weekend-backpacking trip
  • 0:30 - 0:33
in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    We were enchanted
    by the notion of meandering
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    into this frozen wintry wonderland,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
breathing in the smell of the pines,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    feeling the crunch! crunch! crunch!
of the snow beneath our snowshoes,
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    and snuggling up
next to a campfire at night.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
So, in preparation for this trip,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    we bought every winter
    camping gizmo and doodad
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    our young wallets could afford.
  • 1:00 - 1:05
So there we were, in this beautiful,
    pristine winter wonderland
  • 1:06 - 1:09
with 80 pounds each on our backs.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    (Laughter)
  • 1:11 - 1:15
Now, our dream vacation backpacking trip
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    - probably the only one
we were going to get that year -
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    turned into a nightmare.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
We had welts on our shoulders,
    blisters on our feet,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    sweat-soaked base layers.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
We were seduced by the allure of more,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
and we didn't just have more on our backs,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
you might say that we were
    "more-on" backpackers.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
So after a bunch of trips like that,
we took all of those learnings,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    and my husband and I
    founded an outdoor company
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    on the basic notion
that when it comes to connection
  • 1:42 - 1:46
in the outdoors and your gear,
    less really is more.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
We really had found the key
to fun and freedom in the outdoors,
  • 1:50 - 1:53
and it was simple: go light.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
So let's talk about the culture of more.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
When we think about the word 'more,'
we think more money, more sex,
  • 2:00 - 2:04
    more friends, more respect,
    more success, more power, right?
  • 2:06 - 2:09
So where does all this fascination
    with more come from?
  • 2:09 - 2:13
From the rise of industrial capitalism
at the turn of the 20th century.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    Suddenly, mass-produced products
    were available to everyone,
  • 2:16 - 2:20
    life-enhancing products
that raised the standard of living.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    Suddenly, we had more freedom,
    more education, more wealth,
  • 2:23 - 2:27
    higher wages and more democracy.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
But let's talk about some of the things
    that also came with that.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    Suddenly, we filled our days
    from morning to night
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    with no time to breathe,
and we had so many choices.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
As a society, we were consumed
    with the consumption of things.
  • 2:42 - 2:47
Now, tell me, why do we need
    24 flavors of ranch dressing?
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    (Laughter)
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    So is it any wonder
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    what this obsession with more
has brought on a global basis?
  • 2:54 - 2:57
Folks, we're gobbling up the planet,
  • 2:57 - 3:00
and well, we're not having a heck
of a lot of fun while we're doing it.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    Capitalism is a good thing,
  • 3:03 - 3:07
but it has lost its way, and so have we.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
I get the allure of more.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
I know the power of the dark side.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
I think to myself how I look
    so hot, so powerful,
  • 3:19 - 3:21
and so sexy in those shoes.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    I've got to have them.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
So I plunk down my credit card,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
and I have that immediate rush
    of gratification.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    And I take them home
    in their fancy packaging
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    and I stand in front
    of the full length mirror.
  • 3:33 - 3:34
I put them on my feet,
  • 3:35 - 3:38
and I have that sickening realization
  • 3:38 - 3:41
of just how much I put on my credit card,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
and that they freaking hurt my feet!
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    (Laughter)
  • 3:47 - 3:50
And what's left after that initial rush,
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    but emptiness and pain?
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    Fast forward to 2002,
  • 3:57 - 4:00
my husband and I are building
    an awesome company.
  • 4:00 - 4:04
We have product awards and media hits
    coming out of our ears,
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    we are rowing internationally,
  • 4:05 - 4:09
and we are riding this huge wave
    of traditional business success,
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    but we're working more
    than 100 hours a week.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    We're pouring capital in.
  • 4:14 - 4:19
    We're buying ad-buys for a single page
that cost more than 20,000 dollars each.
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    We're buying trade show booths
that cost more than a house.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
And you know, all of that
was in the pursuit of more:
  • 4:28 - 4:33
    more market share, more growth,
    more recognition, more success.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    Can you see the irony
    of building a company
  • 4:37 - 4:41
all about less but living all
of your time in the land of more?
  • 4:43 - 4:45
And what did it really get us?
  • 4:45 - 4:48
It got us less time with each other,
    less time with the family,
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    less time with friends,
    less time in spiritual pursuit,
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    less time working out,
    and ironically,
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    less time in nature.
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    We were running our business
    like the "more-on" backpacker.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
I want to be honest and tell you
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    that the seduction of more
    led me personally
  • 5:09 - 5:11
down a very, very dark path.
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    I was emotionally,
    spiritually, and physically
  • 5:15 - 5:18
so worn out and so out of balance
  • 5:18 - 5:23
that I spent the next eight years
    having five miscarriages,
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    three failed in-vitro fertilization rounds
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    and spending a fortune
in Western and Eastern medical treatments.
  • 5:31 - 5:35
    Can you imagine seeing
    your baby's heartbeat
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    at 12 weeks via ultrasound
  • 5:39 - 5:42
only to find out a few weeks later
that the baby had died in your belly?
  • 5:52 - 5:55
Why are we so afraid of the word 'less'?
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    We think we'll have lack.
    We think we'll be judged.
  • 5:59 - 6:01
We think we won't have enough.
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    We think we're worried
    what other people will say.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
And all of that is rooted in fear.
  • 6:06 - 6:09
    But good people,
what the heck are we afraid of?
  • 6:09 - 6:10
We are living in a civilization
  • 6:10 - 6:14
    with so much prosperity,
    and abundance, and wealth.
  • 6:16 - 6:23
Happiness, when it comes from buying
    things and stuff, is fleeting,
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    and therefore, an illusion.
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    Let's reframe the word 'less,'
  • 6:29 - 6:30
    'less' doesn't mean lack.
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    'Less' doesn't mean lack.
  • 6:34 - 6:38
    'Less' means less stress,
    less anxiety, less anger,
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    less worry, and more happiness,
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    joy, connection, and abundance.
  • 6:47 - 6:51
So, after eight years of fertility
    treatments and trying everything,
  • 6:51 - 6:55
everything to try and have a child,
  • 6:55 - 6:57
I was brought to my knees,
  • 7:00 - 7:03
and everything in me screamed, "Stop!"
  • 7:07 - 7:10
So I did. I got quiet.
  • 7:10 - 7:13
    I stopped being the CEO
of the company that I cofounded.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    I stepped off boards,
    I eliminated commitments.
  • 7:16 - 7:20
    I stopped chasing every notion
I'd been told was my ticket to happiness,
  • 7:20 - 7:24
and I stopped with the attachments,
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    and all of those things
    that weren't serving me
  • 7:27 - 7:31
    like self-judgment, and blame,
    and stress, and worry.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    And after I cleared out
    the clutter of my life,
  • 7:37 - 7:38
and I spent time in nature,
  • 7:38 - 7:41
    and I reconnected
with my family and my friends,
  • 7:41 - 7:44
    I started to sing again,
and I spent time in prayer.
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    This was the result.
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    (Applause)
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    Let's be honest,
  • 7:58 - 8:04
    I have trained and worshipped
at the high altars of more,
  • 8:06 - 8:12
but I know in my bones the abundance
and joy that comes from less.
  • 8:14 - 8:17
Make no doubt, we all have
    the power to turn away
  • 8:17 - 8:21
    from the dark side
    to choose a different path,
  • 8:22 - 8:27
to change the rules of the game,
    to reverse the destructive forces
  • 8:27 - 8:31
    we have wrought on humanity
    and our biosphere.
  • 8:32 - 8:36
    I'm in the business
of selling you things, but what if,
  • 8:37 - 8:41
    imagine, what if we all
    bought fewer things?
  • 8:41 - 8:43
And when we did buy things,
  • 8:43 - 8:48
we bought from brands and companies
that were aligned with our values?
  • 8:50 - 8:55
What if we trusted and had faith
that on the other side of this wall,
  • 8:55 - 8:59
this illusion, this falsehood of more,
  • 8:59 - 9:03
is a life of abundance and joy
    just waiting for us?
  • 9:05 - 9:07
I want to leave you with a question:
  • 9:08 - 9:13
What is that abundance, that joy
    that your heart aches for,
  • 9:15 - 9:19
    and what can you have
less of to make room for it?
  • 9:19 - 9:20
    (Applause)
