Introducing Tablets with Google Play for Education

  • 0:00 - 0:04
    (Music starts.)
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    It's an amazing touch screen
    education right now.
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    It's totally different than
the classroom that we grew up in.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    It's the future.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    I love being the superintendent
    of this district.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
We work with 7400 wonderful kids.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    These children do absolutely
    remarkable things.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    (Music continues.)
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    Every student in Hillsborough
from K to 4 has their own personal tablet.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
We decided to pull them out in the middle
of the year which something you never do.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
And it was unbelievable how smooth
and easy the roll out went.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    " Am I tech savvy!???"
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    No....
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    (Nancy giggles...)
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    I was personally ecstatic
    because I love technology.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    We all got the tablets.
And they took off with that.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
It kind of spread like wildfire.
They were taking it out and
  • 0:49 - 0:52
trying to figure how to use it and while
the kids were showing them how to use it.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
You just press it and then it opens. See?
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    ( School bell rings..)
When they have a tablet in their hands...
  • 0:59 - 1:01
...they become so much more engaged.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    Things have completely changed
    in the way I teach.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
You're going to be choosing a math app
that you would like to practice.. ok?
  • 1:07 - 1:10
Using the Google Play for Education store
is very very easy. It will ask me to send
  • 1:10 - 1:13
It will ask me to send out whatever
app I have chosen to the entire group.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
We have all our math app here...
    or move screen here.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    Apps for Social studies,
    I found them for science.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    - I learnt how to count money...
    - ...how to spell stuff.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
It will help me read books...
  • 1:24 - 1:27
We do have some kids over here working on
math, some kids here working on reading
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    and the teacher can get
    all this data instantly.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
What's the answer, boys and girls?
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    (Kids) Seventy!
    (Teacher) Seventy. Beautiful.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
Give yourself a big pat on the back.
    Very very good job.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    (Kids murmuring)
  • 1:39 - 1:42
One of the most wonderful things
    is individual instruction.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
... you are really doing a good job.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
On an app that we used today,
  • 1:45 - 1:49
no one in the room knew that they were
all reading at different reading level.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    (Kids reading on the tablets.)
  • 1:51 - 1:54
So I can be very specific
    to that one child.
  • 1:54 - 1:59
    - And that is absolutely amazing to me.
    - See if you can problem solve before me.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
They loved to show me things and
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    they helped the others that
    were struggling with it.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
They became partners in the classroom.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    Ok. Open up the tablets...
  • 2:10 - 2:12
It's no longer the special lesson.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    It's the new pencil,
it's the new paper, it's the new book.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    Students will be learning
    whenever they want,
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    whereever they want,
    whenever it's convenient for them.
  • 2:22 - 2:29
    - It's education everywhere at all times...
    - ...which is what a teacher's dream is. So...
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    Some spectacular things are going
    to happen in the classrooms.
  • 2:34 - 2:38
