How the sandwich was invented | Moments of Vision 5 - Jessica Oreck

  • 0:07 - 0:13
    In a Moment of Vision...
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    It's 1762.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
John Montagu is the 4th Earl of Sandwich,
  • 0:18 - 0:23
    a small parish in
    the southwest of England.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    Despite his keen administrative skills,
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    Montagu is a corrupt politician,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    an adulterous husband,
  • 0:29 - 0:36
    and an incessant, degenerate gambler.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
Often, while Montagu is in the midst
    of a particularly high-stakes game,
  • 0:40 - 0:45
he will insist on being served
    his meals at the table.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    In a moment of vision,
though likely inspired by his travels,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
the Earl orders his meat and cheese
    be brought to him
  • 0:51 - 0:54
stacked between two slices of bread
  • 0:54 - 1:00
so that he may eat with one hand
while continuing to gamble with the other.
  • 1:00 - 1:07
    In one notorious episode, Montagu
spends a full day and night gambling.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
It is during the infamous 24 hours
    at the gaming table
  • 1:10 - 1:17
    that Montagu's characteristic handheld
    concession is dubbed "the sandwich."
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    According to one estimate,
  • 1:18 - 1:25
    Americans now consume more than
    300 million sandwiches every day.
