-
0:25 - 0:27As you can see, these instruments are...
-
0:27 - 0:29these are the same instruments
-
0:29 - 0:30but they're just played differently.
-
0:30 - 0:33With my violin, I play classical music.
-
0:33 - 0:36With my fiddle,
I play old-time fiddle music. -
0:36 - 0:38There is also two different ways
you can play the violin. -
0:38 - 0:39There's classical music and
-
0:39 - 0:41there's old-time fiddle music.
-
0:42 - 0:45Classical music could be
considered more strict. -
0:45 - 0:48You really have to follow
the way the music is written -
0:48 - 0:52and to be a professional-class player,
you need good posture. -
0:54 - 0:57Personally, classical music
wasn't my thing. -
0:57 - 0:59I am a guy who doesn't really
like to follow the rules -
0:59 - 1:02and fiddle music gave me
the freedom to play whatever I want. -
1:03 - 1:04My name is Lia
-
1:04 - 1:06and my name is Kai.
-
1:06 - 1:08We are here today to talk to you about
-
1:08 - 1:09how playing an instrument
-
1:09 - 1:11can open unexpected doors
to new experiences. -
1:11 - 1:13Playing instruments hasn't only given us
-
1:13 - 1:15an appreciation for music,
-
1:15 - 1:17but also unique life-experiences
-
1:17 - 1:19we would have never had otherwise.
-
1:20 - 1:22When I was four, my mom
had this crazy idea -
1:22 - 1:23to get us start to play
-
1:23 - 1:25on some kind of musical instrument.
-
1:25 - 1:27So, she brought us
to a music teacher in Chiluac, -
1:27 - 1:30who showed us all
the different varieties of instruments. -
1:30 - 1:33One instrument that really
intrigued me was the violin. -
1:33 - 1:35I told her I really wanted
to get started on it, -
1:35 - 1:37and off we went.
-
1:37 - 1:38After a couple of years, I decided
-
1:38 - 1:40to follow my brother's footsteps
-
1:40 - 1:41and take on the violin as well.
-
1:42 - 1:44We started taking lessons from teachers
-
1:44 - 1:46around the Fraser Valley every weekend.
-
1:47 - 1:50Starting a musical instrument
not only helped my musical sense, -
1:50 - 1:52but it can also give you
-
1:52 - 1:53a better future by getting jobs
-
1:53 - 1:58by touring or playing
in bands or even teaching kids. -
1:58 - 2:00Every summer we go to fiddle camps
-
2:00 - 2:02in contests all around Canada.
-
2:02 - 2:05We get to meet new people,
it's so much fun. -
2:05 - 2:08It may be only for two weeks,
but it's so worth it. -
2:08 - 2:10And if you ever decide
to play a musical instrument, -
2:10 - 2:12I am sure there is
a camp for it somewhere, -
2:12 - 2:14and hopefully you can make
-
2:14 - 2:16as many friends as we did,
-
2:16 - 2:18because you can have
a really good time and jam. -
2:18 - 2:20Speaking of fiddle camps,
-
2:20 - 2:22it's better than it sounds because
-
2:22 - 2:24we get to see our friends from Alberta,
-
2:24 - 2:26Saskatchewan, and even Manitoba.
-
2:27 - 2:30It's the one thing our family
looks forward to every year. -
2:30 - 2:32It gives us the chance
to share our passion with others. -
2:32 - 2:34In these camps, we learn new tunes,
-
2:34 - 2:37we get taught by
the best fiddle players in Canada, -
2:37 - 2:41and like she said before, we meet new friends.
-
2:43 - 2:45Um...playing music
-
2:45 - 2:47not only gave us confidence
in our playing ability, -
2:47 - 2:49but in everyday life experience
such as going to school. -
2:49 - 2:52When I was in grade one,
-
2:52 - 2:54I was the shyest little boy
you could ever meet; -
2:54 - 2:56I'd be to afraid to talk to anybody,
-
2:56 - 2:58my teachers would
always ask me questions, -
2:58 - 3:00I'd be just freeze up
and not know what to say. -
3:00 - 3:02The only people I was
really comfortable around -
3:02 - 3:04were my parents.
-
3:04 - 3:05Playing a musical instrument can give you
-
3:05 - 3:07something to be proud of
-
3:07 - 3:08and something
your parents can be proud of. -
3:08 - 3:12It can give you a head start
by playing in school bands -
3:12 - 3:13or even music classes.
-
3:14 - 3:17Not only do I love playing
violin on a daily basis, -
3:17 - 3:19but it also helps me with stress relief.
-
3:19 - 3:22Say I come home one day
and I have lots of homework -
3:22 - 3:23and I'm just not having
the greatest day. -
3:23 - 3:26I pick up my violin
and cool down a little bit. -
3:27 - 3:29Music also got me and
my brother closer in a way. -
3:29 - 3:31Yeah, sure we have
our ups and downs -
3:31 - 3:33just like any other pair of siblings.
-
3:33 - 3:37And, yeah sure it may bug me sometimes
when he doesn't count in a song -
3:37 - 3:39and I don't know when to start playing
-
3:39 - 3:42but people usually say
we are more like friends than siblings. -
3:42 - 3:44It also gives me and my sister
-
3:44 - 3:46something to talk about,
something we can relate to -
3:46 - 3:47and we can jam
-
3:47 - 3:50and like she said before,
it gives you career advantages -
3:50 - 3:52such as playing in a band.
-
3:52 - 3:55Now we want you
to pick up an instrument -
3:55 - 3:56and just get inspired by the music.
-
3:56 - 3:59You may not find
the right instrument on the first try: -
3:59 - 4:02for example, I started
playing guitar a couple of years back -
4:02 - 4:04and I didn't think
I'd get anywhere with it, -
4:04 - 4:07but I have to admit,
I am not that bad at it. -
4:07 - 4:09And I've been playing
piano and cello -
4:09 - 4:11half as long as
I've been playing violin -
4:11 - 4:14and I'm already playing
advanced tunes on both instruments. -
4:14 - 4:17Music can also help you
when you are bored, -
4:17 - 4:19like when you come home
and there is nothing to do -
4:19 - 4:23you can just pick up your instrument
and just start playing to pass time. -
4:23 - 4:24I hope all of you will learn
some kind of music -
4:24 - 4:27whether is singing
or playing an instrument. -
4:30 - 4:31It may be hard at first
-
4:31 - 4:33but you will eventualy get used to it.
-
4:33 - 4:35Me and my sister,
when we first started performing, -
4:35 - 4:38we were always
too scared to go on a stage. -
4:38 - 4:41Our legs would be shaking,
I wouldn't know what to say, -
4:41 - 4:43and would always repeat myself.
-
4:44 - 4:47But now we have two CDs out,
we write our own tunes, -
4:47 - 4:49we compete in contests all around Canada,
-
4:49 - 4:53we're starting a programme,
a charity programme, -
4:53 - 4:54to start teaching kids the fiddle
-
4:54 - 4:57and we both played in the Olympics.
-
4:57 - 4:58I hope our story will inspire you,
-
4:58 - 5:01cause... hey! if you have got
a passion for music -
5:01 - 5:03don't be afraid
to start chasing that dream. -
5:03 - 5:05Thank you and we wish you
the best of luck and -
5:05 - 5:08we are going end off
with a tune here. -
5:22 - 6:00(Violin music)
-
6:00 - 6:02(Applause)
-
6:02 - 6:03Thank you!
