As you can see, these instruments are...
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    these are the same instruments
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    but they're just played differently.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
With my violin, I play classical music.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    With my fiddle,
    I play old-time fiddle music.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
There is also two different ways
    you can play the violin.
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    There's classical music and
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    there's old-time fiddle music.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    Classical music could be
    considered more strict.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    You really have to follow
the way the music is written
  • 0:48 - 0:52
and to be a professional-class player,
    you need good posture.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    Personally, classical music
    wasn't my thing.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    I am a guy who doesn't really
    like to follow the rules
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    and fiddle music gave me
the freedom to play whatever I want.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    My name is Lia
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    and my name is Kai.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
We are here today to talk to you about
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    how playing an instrument
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    can open unexpected doors
    to new experiences.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
Playing instruments hasn't only given us
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    an appreciation for music,
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    but also unique life-experiences
  • 1:17 - 1:19
we would have never had otherwise.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
When I was four, my mom
    had this crazy idea
  • 1:22 - 1:23
to get us start to play
  • 1:23 - 1:25
on some kind of musical instrument.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    So, she brought us
to a music teacher in Chiluac,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    who showed us all
    the different varieties of instruments.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    One instrument that really
    intrigued me was the violin.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
I told her I really wanted
    to get started on it,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    and off we went.
  • 1:37 - 1:38
After a couple of years, I decided
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    to follow my brother's footsteps
  • 1:40 - 1:41
and take on the violin as well.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
We started taking lessons from teachers
  • 1:44 - 1:46
around the Fraser Valley every weekend.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    Starting a musical instrument
not only helped my musical sense,
  • 1:50 - 1:52
but it can also give you
  • 1:52 - 1:53
a better future by getting jobs
  • 1:53 - 1:58
    by touring or playing
in bands or even teaching kids.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
Every summer we go to fiddle camps
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    in contests all around Canada.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
We get to meet new people,
    it's so much fun.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
It may be only for two weeks,
    but it's so worth it.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    And if you ever decide
    to play a musical instrument,
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    I am sure there is
    a camp for it somewhere,
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    and hopefully you can make
  • 2:14 - 2:16
as many friends as we did,
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    because you can have
a really good time and jam.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    Speaking of fiddle camps,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
it's better than it sounds because
  • 2:22 - 2:24
we get to see our friends from Alberta,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    Saskatchewan, and even Manitoba.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
It's the one thing our family
    looks forward to every year.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    It gives us the chance
to share our passion with others.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
In these camps, we learn new tunes,
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    we get taught by
the best fiddle players in Canada,
  • 2:37 - 2:41
and like she said before, we meet new friends.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    Um...playing music
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    not only gave us confidence
    in our playing ability,
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    but in everyday life experience
    such as going to school.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
When I was in grade one,
  • 2:52 - 2:54
I was the shyest little boy
    you could ever meet;
  • 2:54 - 2:56
I'd be to afraid to talk to anybody,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    my teachers would
    always ask me questions,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    I'd be just freeze up
and not know what to say.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    The only people I was
    really comfortable around
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    were my parents.
  • 3:04 - 3:05
Playing a musical instrument can give you
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    something to be proud of
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    and something
your parents can be proud of.
  • 3:08 - 3:12
It can give you a head start
    by playing in school bands
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    or even music classes.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
Not only do I love playing
    violin on a daily basis,
  • 3:17 - 3:19
but it also helps me with stress relief.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
Say I come home one day
and I have lots of homework
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    and I'm just not having
    the greatest day.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    I pick up my violin
and cool down a little bit.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    Music also got me and
my brother closer in a way.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    Yeah, sure we have
    our ups and downs
  • 3:31 - 3:33
just like any other pair of siblings.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
And, yeah sure it may bug me sometimes
when he doesn't count in a song
  • 3:37 - 3:39
and I don't know when to start playing
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    but people usually say
we are more like friends than siblings.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
It also gives me and my sister
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    something to talk about,
    something we can relate to
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    and we can jam
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    and like she said before,
    it gives you career advantages
  • 3:50 - 3:52
such as playing in a band.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    Now we want you
    to pick up an instrument
  • 3:55 - 3:56
and just get inspired by the music.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    You may not find
the right instrument on the first try:
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    for example, I started
playing guitar a couple of years back
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    and I didn't think
    I'd get anywhere with it,
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    but I have to admit,
I am not that bad at it.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    And I've been playing
    piano and cello
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    half as long as
    I've been playing violin
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    and I'm already playing
    advanced tunes on both instruments.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    Music can also help you
    when you are bored,
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    like when you come home
and there is nothing to do
  • 4:19 - 4:23
you can just pick up your instrument
and just start playing to pass time.
  • 4:23 - 4:24
I hope all of you will learn
    some kind of music
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    whether is singing
    or playing an instrument.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
It may be hard at first
  • 4:31 - 4:33
but you will eventualy get used to it.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    Me and my sister,
    when we first started performing,
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    we were always
too scared to go on a stage.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    Our legs would be shaking,
I wouldn't know what to say,
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    and would always repeat myself.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
But now we have two CDs out,
    we write our own tunes,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
we compete in contests all around Canada,
  • 4:49 - 4:53
    we're starting a programme,
    a charity programme,
  • 4:53 - 4:54
to start teaching kids the fiddle
  • 4:54 - 4:57
and we both played in the Olympics.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
I hope our story will inspire you,
  • 4:58 - 5:01
cause... hey! if you have got
    a passion for music
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    don't be afraid
    to start chasing that dream.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
Thank you and we wish you
    the best of luck and
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    we are going end off
    with a tune here.
  • 5:22 - 6:00
    (Violin music)
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    (Applause)
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    Thank you!
