My name is Brenda and my son Leon is 6 and has Down's Syndrome.
-
He has challenges with communication.
-
He has a lot to say but he can't always get it from his brain to his mouth.
-
A lot of his words sound similar. It's hard to differentiate different words.
-
When he was about three years old we came to Pacer, with our speech therapist from school.
-
Our school people have been with us all the way and a private therapist as well.
-
fantastic team his whole life- surrounded by really good people.
-
So then we tried out the "Go Talk" low tech communication system when he was younger
-
and then we tried the iPod Touch from Pacer.
-
Found that he was a little too young for that at the time and finally bought the iPad
-
it was bigger and easier for him to learn on.
-
So he has had an iPad and Proloquo2go for about a year and a half. He is using it
-
as a supplement to his communication. He signs, talks, and uses the iPad to supplement.
-
So many of his words are similar sounding, if there is a c or k or a p or and m. So it's really hard to differentiate.
-
So our process to use it was ...Proloquo comes loaded with tons of things. I started his own page
-
and added things slowly to it as he got better
-
Now he's getting pretty good. It's not his most primary mode of communication but it's really really nice backup.
-
I see it as really beneficial in the sense that he sees it, hears it, and repeats it.
-
It's another layer of communication for him.

There's a lot of professionals out there that can help.
-
Leo's been blessed with lot's of good good people.
-
It's been really good for him and I only see good things for the future.
