0:07:18.833,0:07:25.230 What was this comet that mysteriously paved the way for the coming of the British monarchy? 0:07:25.230,0:07:31.030 Well, believe it or not, that same comet--the very same comet 0:07:31.030,0:07:33.596 that initiated the British monarchy 0:07:33.596,0:07:37.917 sailed over London once again in 1682. 0:07:38.871,0:07:44.515 This time, everyone was asking the question, where do comets come from? 0:07:44.515,0:07:47.660 Do they signal the death of the king? 0:07:47.660,0:07:51.917 Why do we have messengers from the heavens in the sky? 0:07:51.917,0:07:56.150 Well, one man dared to penetrate the secrets of comets, 0:07:56.150,0:07:58.196 and that was Isaac Newton. 0:07:58.196,0:08:05.511 In fact, when Isaac Newton was only 23 years old, he stumbled upon the universal force of gravitation. 0:08:05.511,0:08:13.782 According to one story, he was walking on his estate in Wilsthorpe and he saw an apple fall. 0:08:13.782,0:08:15.638 And then Isaac Newton saw the moon. 0:08:15.638,0:08:20.306 And then he asked the key question which helped to unlock the heavens: 0:08:20.306,0:08:27.436 "If apples fall, does the moon also fall?" 0:08:27.436,0:08:30.674 And the answer was: Yes. 0:08:30.674,0:08:37.848 And that answer overturned thousands of years of mystery and speculation about the motions of the heavens. 0:08:37.848,0:08:44.097 The moon is in free fall just like an apple. 0:08:44.097,0:08:48.176 The moon is constantly falling toward the earth. 0:08:48.176,0:08:52.005 It doesn't hit the Earth because it spins around the Earth, and the Earth is round, 0:08:52.005,0:08:57.218 but it's acting under a force--a force of gravity. 0:08:58.912,0:09:01.702 So, Newton immediately tried to work out the mathematics. 0:09:01.702,0:09:07.842 And he realized that the mathematics of this 1600's was not sufficient to work out the motion 0:09:07.842,0:09:10.302 of a falling moon. 0:09:10.302,0:09:12.509 So, what did Isaac Newton do? 0:09:12.509,0:09:17.564 When he was 23 years old, not only did he stumble upon the force of gravity, 0:09:17.564,0:09:20.861 but he also created Calculus. 0:09:20.861,0:09:27.158 In fact, he created Calculus at the rate at which you learn it when you are a freshman in college. 0:09:27.158,0:09:29.522 And why did he create Calculus? 0:09:29.522,0:09:33.964 To calculate the motion of a falling moon. 0:09:33.964,0:09:37.358 The mathematics of this age was incapable of calculating 0:09:37.358,0:09:40.952 the trajectories of objects moving under an inverse square force field. 0:09:40.952,0:09:46.541 And that's what Isaac Newton did; he worked out the motion of the moon, 0:09:46.541,0:09:49.970 and then he realized that if he understands the moon, 0:09:49.970,0:09:56.556 he also understands the motion of the planets in the solar system. 0:09:57.571,0:10:00.513 And Isaac Newton invented a new telescope. 0:10:00.513,0:10:05.690 It was the reflecting telescope, and he was tracking the motion of this comet. 0:10:06.597,0:10:12.833 Well, it turns out that everyone was talking about the comet, including a rather wealthy Englishman by the name of Edmund Halley. 0:10:15.156,0:10:20.867 So, Edmund Halley, being a wealthy merchant, decided to make a trip to Cambridge 0:10:20.867,0:10:26.109 to talk to England's illustrious scientist, Sir Isaac Newton. 0:10:26.109,0:10:30.633 Well, Edmund Halley asked Newton, "What do you make of this comet?" 0:10:30.633,0:10:34.067 "No one understands comets, they're a mystery." 0:10:34.067,0:10:39.167 "They've been fascinating people for centuries, for millennia--what are your thoughts?" 0:10:39.167,0:10:42.649 And then, I paraphrase, but Isaac Newton said something like this. 0:10:42.649,0:10:52.886 He said, "Oh, that's easy. That comet is moving at a perfect ellipse. It's moving in an inverse square force field." 0:10:52.886,0:10:59.223 "I've been tracking it every day with my reflecting telescope, and the path of that comet 0:10:59.223,0:11:03.425 conforms to my mathematics exactly." 0:11:03.425,0:11:07.446 And, of course, we don't know what Edmund Halley's reaction was, but I paraphrase. 0:11:07.446,0:11:16.191 He must have said something like this, "For God's sake, man, why don't you publish the greatest work 0:11:16.191,0:11:19.351 in all of scientific history? 0:11:19.351,0:11:25.702 If correct, you have decoded the secret of the stars, the secret of the heavens. 0:11:25.702,0:11:28.696 Nobody understands where comets come from!" 0:11:28.696,0:11:35.879 And then Newton responded and said, "Oh, well, it costs too much. I mean, I'm not a wealthy man." 0:11:35.879,0:11:42.268 "It would cost too much to summarize this calculus that I've invented and to work out all the motion of the stars." 0:11:42.268,0:11:47.864 And then Halley must have said this, "Mister Newton, I am a wealthy man." 0:11:47.864,0:11:58.218 "I have made my fortune in congress.
