0:00:15.124,0:00:18.331 Can the mind really heal the body? 0:00:18.346,0:00:21.553 And if so, is there[br]any scientific evidence 0:00:21.553,0:00:25.500 to convince skeptical physicians like me? 0:00:25.516,0:00:28.783 These are the questions that fueled[br]the last few years of my research 0:00:28.796,0:00:32.267 and what I discovered[br]is that the scientific community, 0:00:32.267,0:00:36.527 the medical establishment,[br]has being proving for over 50 years, 0:00:36.527,0:00:38.754 that the mind can heal the body. 0:00:38.754,0:00:41.474 We call it the "placebo effect". 0:00:41.474,0:00:43.965 And we've been trying[br]to outsmart it for decades. 0:00:43.965,0:00:45.640 (Laughter) 0:00:45.640,0:00:49.716 The placebo effect is a thorn in the side[br]of the medical establishment. 0:00:49.716,0:00:53.142 It's an inconvenient truth,[br]that gets in between, 0:00:53.142,0:00:57.722 trying to bring new treatments, new[br]surgeries into the medical establishment. 0:00:57.722,0:01:02.766 So it's a problem![br]Supposedly. 0:01:02.766,0:01:04.981 But I actually think,[br]this is really good news! 0:01:04.981,0:01:07.246 The placebo effect is excellent news! 0:01:07.246,0:01:09.398 Because it's concrete evidence 0:01:09.398,0:01:13.566 that the body holds within it[br]innate self-repair mechanisms 0:01:13.566,0:01:19.752 that can make unthinkable[br]things happen to the body. 0:01:19.752,0:01:21.275 So, if you find this surprising, 0:01:21.275,0:01:24.394 if you have a hard time believing[br]that the body can heal itself, 0:01:24.394,0:01:27.472 you need look no further than[br]The Spontaneous Remission Project, 0:01:27.472,0:01:30.357 a database compiled[br]by the Institute of Noetic Sciences 0:01:30.357,0:01:33.668 of over 3500 case studies[br]in the medical literature 0:01:33.668,0:01:38.224 of patients who have gotten better[br]from seemingly "incurable" illnesses. 0:01:38.224,0:01:40.951 You think there's such[br]a thing as an incurable illness? 0:01:40.951,0:01:44.089 I swear, if you go look at this database,[br]it will blow your mind. 0:01:44.089,0:01:45.487 Everything is in there. 0:01:45.487,0:01:48.596 Stage 4 cancers that disappeared[br]without treatment. 0:01:48.596,0:01:52.679 HIV positive patients,[br]that became HIV negative. 0:01:52.679,0:01:56.506 Heart disease, kidney failure,[br]diabetes, high blood pressure, 0:01:56.506,0:01:59.533 thyroid disease,[br]autoimmune diseases, gone. 0:01:59.533,0:02:02.952 A great example of this[br]in the medical literature, 0:02:02.952,0:02:08.419 is a case study from 1957 of Mr. Wright[br]who had advanced lymphosarcoma. 0:02:08.419,0:02:12.307 So, things weren't going well for[br]Mr. Wright, time was really running out. 0:02:12.307,0:02:18.255 He had tumors the size of oranges in his[br]armpits, neck, chest, abdomen. 0:02:18.255,0:02:20.334 His liver and spleen were enlarged, 0:02:20.334,0:02:23.741 and his lungs were filling up with[br]two quarts of milky fluid every day 0:02:23.741,0:02:26.293 that have to be drained[br]in order for him to breathe. 0:02:26.293,0:02:28.239 But Mr. Wright wasn't giving up hope. 0:02:28.239,0:02:31.020 He had heard about[br]this wonder drug called Krebiozen, 0:02:31.020,0:02:32.715 and he was begging his doctor, 0:02:32.715,0:02:36.348 "Come on, just give me some of that[br]Krebiozen, it's all going to be good." 0:02:36.348,0:02:39.973 Now, unfortunately the Krebiozen was[br]only available on a research protocol 0:02:39.973,0:02:43.381 and the protocol required that the doctor[br]be able to make an assessment 0:02:43.381,0:02:46.106 that says that this guy has[br]at least three months to live. 0:02:46.106,0:02:48.437 And his doctor,[br]Dr. West just couldn't do that. 0:02:48.437,0:02:50.967 But Mr. Wright was tenacious[br]and he didn't give up. 0:02:50.967,0:02:52.643 He kept badgering his doctor, 0:02:52.643,0:02:56.129 until finally his doctor was like,[br]"OK, fine I'll give you the Krebiozen." 0:02:56.129,0:02:57.941 So he dosed him up on a Friday, 0:02:57.941,0:03:01.126 not expecting that Mr. Wright[br]would make it through the weekend. 0:03:01.126,0:03:04.554 But to his utter shock, when Dr. West[br]came in to do rounds on Monday, 0:03:04.554,0:03:06.792 Mr. Wright was up,[br]walking around the wards, 0:03:06.792,0:03:09.609 and his tumors had shrunk[br]to half of their original size. 0:03:09.609,0:03:12.108 They had melted like[br]snowballs on a hot stove. 0:03:12.108,0:03:14.854 And ten days after getting[br]the Krebiozen, they were gone. 0:03:14.854,0:03:17.484 So Mr. Wright was up[br]rocking and rolling like praising 0:03:17.484,0:03:21.023 Krebiozen as the miracle drug[br]he believed it to be, for two months, 0:03:21.023,0:03:23.413 until the initial reports[br]came out about Krebiozen 0:03:23.413,0:03:26.819 that said that it didn't really look like[br]Krebiozen was working so well. 0:03:26.819,0:03:30.286 Mr. Wright fell into a deep depression[br]and his cancer came back. 0:03:30.286,0:03:34.998 This time Dr. West decided to get sneaky,[br]and he told his patient, that, 0:03:34.998,0:03:38.825 "You know that Krebiozen that you got,[br]that was a tainted version, not so good. 0:03:38.825,0:03:42.487 But I got us some ultrapure[br]highly concentrated Krebiozen, 0:03:42.487,0:03:45.249 This stuff's got it going on." 0:03:45.249,0:03:49.621 He then injected Mr. Wright[br]with nothing but distilled water. 0:03:49.621,0:03:53.963 And once again, the tumors disappeared,[br]the fluid in his lungs went away. 0:03:53.963,0:03:57.227 Mr. Wright was up rocking and rolling[br]for another two months. 0:03:57.227,0:03:59.783 And then the American[br]Medical Association blew it, 0:03:59.783,0:04:01.683 by publishing a nationwide study 0:04:01.683,0:04:05.884 that proved definitively[br]that Krebiozen was worthless. 0:04:05.884,0:04:10.092 Two days later, Mr. Wright,[br]after hearing this news, died. 0:04:10.092,0:04:12.384 Soon after that,[br]I came across another study 0:04:12.384,0:04:15.851 in the medical literature[br]that was the stuff of fairy tales. 0:04:15.851,0:04:18.386 Three baby girls were born,[br]delivered by a midwife, 0:04:18.386,0:04:22.570 on Friday the 13th in the Okefenokee[br]Swamp, near the Georgia-Florida border. 0:04:22.570,0:04:25.022 And the midwife pronounced[br]that these three babies, 0:04:25.022,0:04:27.968 born on such a fateful day,[br]were all hexed. 0:04:27.968,0:04:31.267 The first, she said, would die[br]before her 16th birthday. 0:04:31.267,0:04:34.035 The second, before her 21st. 0:04:34.035,0:04:36.737 The third, before her 23rd birthday. 0:04:36.737,0:04:41.383 And as it turned out, the first girl died[br]the day before her 16th birthday, 0:04:41.383,0:04:44.654 the second died the day[br]before her 21st birthday, 0:04:44.654,0:04:47.667 and the third girl, who knew what[br]had happened to the other two, 0:04:47.667,0:04:50.295 got wind of that, and the day[br]before her 23rd birthday, 0:04:50.295,0:04:52.344 she showed at the hospital[br]hyperventilating, 0:04:52.344,0:04:54.559 begging them,[br]to make sure she survived. 0:04:54.559,0:04:57.007 She wound up dying that night. 0:04:57.007,0:05:00.423 These two case studies are great[br]examples from the medical literature 0:05:00.423,0:05:05.427 of the placebo effect, and[br]its opposite, the nocebo effect. 0:05:05.427,0:05:08.812 When Mr. Wright got that distilled[br]water and his tumors melted away, 0:05:08.812,0:05:11.329 that's a great example[br]of the placebo effect. 0:05:11.329,0:05:13.901 When you get a seemingly[br]inert treatment 0:05:13.901,0:05:16.845 and yet something is happening[br]physiologically in the body, 0:05:16.845,0:05:18.617 such that the disease goes away. 0:05:18.617,0:05:20.690 The nocebo effect is the opposite. 0:05:20.690,0:05:23.933 So the three hexed girls are[br]an example of the nocebo effect. 0:05:23.933,0:05:27.357 When the mind's belief that something[br]bad is going to happen in the body 0:05:27.357,0:05:29.519 then it comes to manifest. 0:05:29.519,0:05:32.578 So the scientific literature,[br]medical journals 0:05:32.578,0:05:34.641 like the New England Journal of Medicine 0:05:34.641,0:05:37.250 and the Journal of the American[br]Medical Association, 0:05:37.250,0:05:40.983 these scientific journals are[br]full of evidence that the placebo effect, 0:05:40.983,0:05:44.147 and the nocebo effect[br]are incredibly powerful. 0:05:44.147,0:05:46.295 We've known this since the 1950s, 0:05:46.295,0:05:49.111 and we've seen countless case studies 0:05:49.111,0:05:52.036 that show that in almost[br]everything you study, 0:05:52.036,0:05:55.946 if you give people[br]a fake treatment, a sugar pill 0:05:55.946,0:05:59.963 a saline injection, or most effectively,[br]a fake surgery, 0:05:59.963,0:06:03.980 (Laughter)[br]- yeah, really - 0:06:03.980,0:06:07.799 18-80% of the time, people get better. 0:06:07.799,0:06:11.206 And it's not just in their mind,[br]that's what I thought in the beginning, 0:06:11.206,0:06:14.274 like "Oh! They're just feeling better,[br]they're thinking better." 0:06:14.274,0:06:16.666 But is not.[br]It's actually in their physiology. 0:06:16.666,0:06:17.966 This is measurable. 0:06:17.966,0:06:20.164 You can actually see[br]what happens to the body. 0:06:20.164,0:06:22.292 So for example patients getting placebos 0:06:22.292,0:06:24.346 were found to have ulcers that healed, 0:06:24.346,0:06:28.234 colons that became less inflamed,[br]bronchi that dilated, 0:06:28.234,0:06:31.918 warts that disappeared, cells[br]looked different under the microscope. 0:06:31.918,0:06:34.064 It's provable, it's happening in the body, 0:06:34.064,0:06:36.686 even though it's initiated by the mind. 0:06:36.686,0:06:40.657 So, when you look at these,[br]some of the studies are just amazing. 0:06:40.657,0:06:42.199 I love the Rogain studies. 0:06:42.199,0:06:44.864 You get a bunch of bald men,[br]you give them placebos. 0:06:44.864,0:06:48.161 They grow hair![br](Laughter) 0:06:48.161,0:06:52.320 The opposite is also true,[br]so if you give people a placebo 0:06:52.320,0:06:54.372 and you tell them it's chemotherapy, 0:06:54.372,0:06:56.782 they vomit, and they lose their hair. 0:06:56.782,0:06:58.916 So this is really happening in the body. 0:06:58.916,0:07:00.225 My question was, 0:07:00.225,0:07:04.104 Is it just the mind's positive belief[br]that's making this happen? 0:07:04.104,0:07:07.069 Not according to Harvard[br]researcher Ted Kaptchuk. 0:07:07.069,0:07:10.926 According to him, he thinks[br]that the most essential part 0:07:10.926,0:07:15.086 is actually the nurturing care[br]of a healthcare provider, 0:07:15.086,0:07:18.230 more so even than the mind's[br]positive belief 0:07:18.230,0:07:23.474 that some of the studies actually say[br]that the doctor is the placebo or can be. 0:07:23.474,0:07:25.457 So Ted Kaptchuk wanted to study this, 0:07:25.457,0:07:28.294 and he did a great study[br]looking at patients 0:07:28.294,0:07:30.531 that were getting placebos for an illness, 0:07:30.531,0:07:32.767 for treatment of an illness[br]and he told them, 0:07:32.767,0:07:35.180 "You're getting a placebo,[br]there's nothing in here, 0:07:35.180,0:07:40.375 inert ingredients, nothing active."[br]They still got better. 0:07:40.375,0:07:44.677 Most likely, Kaptchuk postulated,[br]because they felt tended, nurtured, 0:07:44.677,0:07:48.841 they felt like they were doing something,[br]they felt like somebody cared. 0:07:48.841,0:07:53.489 So to say that you can heal yourself[br]is sort of a misnomer. 0:07:53.489,0:07:55.158 You know, the body can heal itself. 0:07:55.158,0:07:57.935 The body has these innate[br]natural self repair mechanisms, 0:07:57.935,0:08:02.168 but the scientific data[br]proves that you need 0:08:02.168,0:08:06.616 the tending nurturing care of a healthcare[br]provider, of some sort, of a healer, 0:08:06.616,0:08:08.882 to facilitate that process. 0:08:08.882,0:08:11.032 It's not an easy process[br]to go through alone, 0:08:11.032,0:08:12.488 so it makes a big difference 0:08:12.488,0:08:15.273 if somebody else is holding[br]that positive belief with you. 0:08:15.273,0:08:18.810 But the problem is while[br]the doctor can be the placebo, 0:08:18.810,0:08:21.455 the doctor can also be the nocebo. 0:08:21.455,0:08:24.614 So, what patients need from us,[br]as healthcare providers, 0:08:24.614,0:08:30.881 they need us to be forces of healing,[br]not forces of fear or pessimism. 0:08:30.881,0:08:34.518 So every time your doctor tells you,[br]"You have an incurable illness, 0:08:34.518,0:08:39.683 you're going to have to take that[br]medication for the rest of your life," 0:08:39.683,0:08:41.841 or God forbid,[br]you get cancer and they say, 0:08:41.841,0:08:45.326 "You've got a 5% five-year survival rate," 0:08:45.326,0:08:49.211 it's really no different that when[br]that midwife told those three baby girls 0:08:49.211,0:08:50.989 that they were hexed. 0:08:50.989,0:08:53.768 It's a form of medical hexing[br]that's so prevalent. 0:08:53.768,0:08:56.316 As doctors, we think[br]we're being realistic, you know? 0:08:56.316,0:08:58.356 We're giving people[br]the kind of information 0:08:58.356,0:08:59.782 we think they need to know, 0:08:59.782,0:09:01.648 but we actually can be harming them. 0:09:01.648,0:09:03.896 Instead we need be more[br]like Dr. West. You know? 0:09:03.896,0:09:06.335 Taking that distilled water,[br]"Really Mr.Wright, 0:09:06.335,0:09:08.972 I promise, this is going to[br]do it for you." 0:09:08.972,0:09:12.731 But do we have to count on[br]our doctors to dupe us? 0:09:12.731,0:09:16.231 Do we have to get fake surgeries[br]and fake drugs, 0:09:16.231,0:09:19.231 and wind up in clinical trials? 0:09:19.231,0:09:22.378 This is what led[br]the next phase of my research. 0:09:22.378,0:09:24.271 So in my last TEDx talk, l talked about 0:09:24.271,0:09:26.349 a new wellness model that I developed, 0:09:26.349,0:09:28.500 called the Whole Health Cairn, 0:09:28.500,0:09:31.574 and this came about[br]as part of my research, 0:09:31.574,0:09:35.664 trying to find how else can[br]we harness this mind's power 0:09:35.664,0:09:39.189 that's clearly evidenced by[br]the placebo effect and the nocebo effect, 0:09:39.189,0:09:41.778 can we do something without[br]being in a clinical trial? 0:09:41.778,0:09:45.488 And my hypothesis was[br]that in order to heal ourselves, 0:09:45.488,0:09:47.492 in order to be optimally healthy, 0:09:47.492,0:09:52.704 we need more than just a good diet,[br]regular exercise program, 0:09:52.704,0:09:56.324 getting enough sleep, taking your[br]vitamins, following your doctor's orders. 0:09:56.324,0:09:59.046 Those things all are great,[br]and critical and important. 0:09:59.046,0:10:01.987 But I also came to believe that[br]we need healthy relationships, 0:10:01.987,0:10:05.500 a healthy professional life,[br]a healthy creative life, 0:10:05.500,0:10:08.177 a healthy spiritual life,[br]a healthy sex life, 0:10:08.177,0:10:10.685 a healthy financial life,[br]a healthy environment. 0:10:10.685,0:10:14.194 In essence, we need a healthy mind. 0:10:14.194,0:10:17.981 So I wanted to try to prove this, and[br]I went into the medical literature 0:10:17.981,0:10:20.799 and the copious data that I found, 0:10:20.799,0:10:25.187 proving that all of those things[br]are essential, really blew my mind. 0:10:25.187,0:10:27.562 I compiled them all into my upcoming book, 0:10:27.562,0:10:31.600 "Mind Over Medicine: Scientific[br]Proof You Can Heal Yourself". 0:10:31.600,0:10:35.638 But I want to give you a few highlights[br]about what this is all about. 0:10:35.638,0:10:38.370 So you can see from[br]the Whole Health Cairn, 0:10:38.370,0:10:40.945 that all this facets are built upon[br]a foundation stone 0:10:40.945,0:10:43.136 that I call your Inner Pilot Light. 0:10:43.136,0:10:45.913 And for me that's the essential[br]authentic part of you, 0:10:45.913,0:10:47.691 that knows what's true for you. 0:10:47.691,0:10:49.568 That's willing to tell you the truth 0:10:49.568,0:10:52.028 about maybe what's out[br]of alignment in your life, 0:10:52.028,0:10:55.059 what stones in your Whole Health Cairn[br]might be out of balance. 0:10:55.059,0:10:57.539 And as you see I've put the body,[br]physical health, 0:10:57.539,0:10:59.349 on the top of the Whole Health Cairn 0:10:59.349,0:11:01.829 because it's the most fragile,[br]the most precarious, 0:11:01.829,0:11:04.200 and the most easy to kind[br]of fall out of balance 0:11:04.200,0:11:06.594 if other things in your life[br]aren't going so well. 0:11:06.594,0:11:10.544 So what I found in the medical data[br]is that relationships matter. 0:11:10.544,0:11:14.600 People that have a strong social network[br]have half the rate of heart disease 0:11:14.600,0:11:17.008 compared to those who are lonely. 0:11:17.008,0:11:22.972 Married people are twice as likely[br]to live long lives than unmarried people. 0:11:22.972,0:11:25.004 In fact, curing your loneliness may be 0:11:25.004,0:11:28.514 the most important measure of prevention[br]you can enact upon your body. 0:11:28.514,0:11:32.504 More so than quitting smoking[br]or starting to exercise. 0:11:32.504,0:11:34.678 Your spiritual life matters. 0:11:34.678,0:11:38.917 Those who attend religious services[br]live up to fourteen years longer. 0:11:38.917,0:11:40.601 Your professional life matters. 0:11:40.601,0:11:44.470 You really can work yourself to death.[br]In Japan they call it karoshi. 0:11:44.470,0:11:50.878 Death by overwork, and the survivors[br]of those who die of karoshi, 0:11:50.878,0:11:54.213 can actually apply for workman's[br]comp-like benefits in Japan. 0:11:54.213,0:11:58.103 But it's not just Japan, it's actually[br]happening even more in the United States, 0:11:58.103,0:11:59.897 we just don't get benefits here. 0:11:59.897,0:12:02.893 So one study found that people[br]that fail to take their vacation, 0:12:02.893,0:12:06.014 are actually a third more likely[br]to get heart disease. 0:12:06.014,0:12:08.289 Your attitude really matters. 0:12:08.289,0:12:12.180 Ηappy people live 7 to 10 years[br]longer than unhappy people, 0:12:12.180,0:12:18.055 and optimists are 77% less likely[br]to get heart disease than pessimists. 0:12:18.055,0:12:19.864 So how does this happen? 0:12:19.864,0:12:23.584 What is happening in the brain[br]that is making the body change? 0:12:23.584,0:12:25.608 This is what was fascinating to me. 0:12:25.608,0:12:29.048 I found that the brain communicates[br]with all the cells in the body 0:12:29.048,0:12:31.523 via hormones and neurotransmitters. 0:12:31.523,0:12:34.153 So, for example, if you have[br]a negative thought, belief 0:12:34.153,0:12:37.930 or feeling in the brain,[br]your brain triggers this as a threat. 0:12:37.930,0:12:38.796 Something's wrong. 0:12:38.796,0:12:41.568 If you feel lonely or pessimistic,[br]things are bad at work, 0:12:41.568,0:12:45.099 you are in a toxic relationship,[br]the amygdala says, "Τhreat! Τhreat!" 0:12:45.099,0:12:49.213 and it turns on the hypothalamus,[br]that talks to the pituitary gland, 0:12:49.213,0:12:53.142 that communicates with the adrenal gland[br]and the adrenal gland start spitting out 0:12:53.142,0:12:57.081 stress hormones like cortisol,[br]norepinephrine, epinephrine. 0:12:57.081,0:13:00.788 Ιt turns on what Walter Cannon[br]at Harvard called the stress response, 0:13:00.788,0:13:04.512 that triggers the sympathetic[br]nervous system, 0:13:04.512,0:13:07.914 and puts you into that[br]fight or flight mode, which is adaptive, 0:13:07.914,0:13:11.318 it's protective if you are running away[br]from a mountain lion, 0:13:11.318,0:13:14.961 but in every day life, you're supposed[br]to have that quick stress response 0:13:14.961,0:13:18.048 if there is a threat and then[br]it's supposed to switch right off. 0:13:18.048,0:13:21.066 This isn't what happens[br]in our regular lives these days. 0:13:21.066,0:13:24.387 But fortunately there is[br]a counter balancing relaxation response 0:13:24.387,0:13:26.702 that Herbert Benson at Harvard described. 0:13:26.702,0:13:30.786 And when this comes about,[br]the stress response turns off, 0:13:30.786,0:13:32.983 the parasympathetic nervous system[br]turns on, 0:13:32.983,0:13:38.535 and healing hormones like oxytocin,[br]dopamine, nitric oxide, endorphins 0:13:38.535,0:13:41.757 fill the body and bathe[br]every cell in the body. 0:13:41.757,0:13:43.805 What I found the most amazing about this 0:13:43.805,0:13:47.032 is that those natural self-repair[br]mechanisms that we all have, 0:13:47.032,0:13:52.054 they only flip on when[br]the nervous system is relaxed. 0:13:52.054,0:13:54.678 So when you're having stress responses, 0:13:54.678,0:13:58.318 all those natural self-repair[br]mechanisms get flipped off. 0:13:58.318,0:14:03.127 The body is too busy trying to fight[br]or flee, in order to heal itself. 0:14:03.127,0:14:07.875 So, when you think about this,[br]you have to start to wonder like, 0:14:07.875,0:14:12.317 How can I possibly start to change[br]the balance in my own body? 0:14:12.317,0:14:14.835 So one study showed[br]that on average we have 0:14:14.835,0:14:17.788 more than 50 stress responses per day. 0:14:17.788,0:14:21.481 And if you're lonely, or depressed[br]or pessimistic or unhappy at work 0:14:21.481,0:14:25.636 or in a miserable relationship that number[br]is going to be more than twice as many. 0:14:25.636,0:14:28.883 Now this relaxation response[br]is what researchers think 0:14:28.883,0:14:30.822 explains the placebo effect. 0:14:30.822,0:14:34.569 So when you're going to get supposedly[br]maybe a new wonder drug - 0:14:34.569,0:14:37.350 you don't know whether you're getting[br]the placebo or not - 0:14:37.350,0:14:39.283 it triggers that relaxation response, 0:14:39.283,0:14:41.473 that combination of the mind's[br]positive belief 0:14:41.473,0:14:44.460 and the nurturing care[br]of a healthcare provider 0:14:44.046,0:14:45.526 relaxes the nervous system. 0:14:45.526,0:14:49.594 And then all those natural self repair[br]mechanisms can come into play. 0:14:49.594,0:14:52.464 Fortunately though you don't have[br]to be in a clinical trial 0:14:52.464,0:14:54.280 to turn on your relaxation responses. 0:14:54.280,0:14:56.882 There are lots of simple[br]pleasurable activities 0:14:56.882,0:14:58.772 that turn on the relaxation responses 0:14:58.772,0:15:01.371 and these have been proven[br]in the medical literature. 0:15:01.371,0:15:05.786 So you can meditate,[br]you can express yourself creatively, 0:15:05.786,0:15:09.293 you can get a massage,[br]do yoga or tai chi, 0:15:09.293,0:15:12.743 you can go out with your friends,[br]you can do work that you love, 0:15:12.743,0:15:18.840 you can have sex, you can laugh,[br]exercise, you can play with animals. 0:15:18.840,0:15:22.154 So I ask you to consider[br]the Whole Health Cairn in your own life. 0:15:22.154,0:15:25.813 Which stones in your Whole Health Cairn[br]might be out of balance? 0:15:25.813,0:15:28.495 Each of these stones can be a factor 0:15:28.495,0:15:32.224 for creating stress responses[br]or relaxation responses. 0:15:32.224,0:15:36.553 How might you turn on more[br]relaxation responses in your body? 0:15:36.553,0:15:38.144 And most importantly, 0:15:38.144,0:15:40.782 what does your body[br]need in order to heal? 0:15:40.782,0:15:43.503 What prescription do you need[br]to write for yourself? 0:15:43.503,0:15:45.502 And are you going to be brave enough 0:15:45.502,0:15:50.021 to take action on the truth of what[br]your inner pilot light already knows? 0:15:50.021,0:15:53.532 I believe our healthcare system[br]is badly broken, 0:15:53.532,0:15:55.684 and it's largely because[br]we've lost respect 0:15:55.684,0:15:58.104 for the body's ability to heal itself. 0:15:58.104,0:16:00.554 The medical establishment[br]has gotten arrogant. 0:16:00.554,0:16:03.416 We've come to think[br]that with all of our modern technology, 0:16:03.416,0:16:05.655 and all that we've learned[br]in the past century, 0:16:05.655,0:16:10.167 that we've mastered nature,[br]and we find it repelling 0:16:10.167,0:16:14.256 to think that maybe nature could[br]be better than we are sometimes. 0:16:14.256,0:16:19.177 And yet, spontaneous remissions[br]from incurable diseases are proof 0:16:19.177,0:16:22.200 that sometimes nature[br]is just better than we are. 0:16:22.020,0:16:23.963 It's a narcisitic wound for physicians. 0:16:23.963,0:16:25.819 We don't know what to do with that. 0:16:25.819,0:16:28.397 It makes us feel helpless[br]and hopeless and useless. 0:16:28.397,0:16:30.968 But fortunately, we're needed. 0:16:30.968,0:16:33.781 The physician and all the other[br]healthcare providers 0:16:33.781,0:16:36.297 are absolutely essential to this process. 0:16:36.297,0:16:38.030 We need to embrace this. 0:16:38.030,0:16:41.010 And patients need to change[br]their outlooks on this as well. 0:16:41.010,0:16:42.475 It is not just doctors. 0:16:42.475,0:16:45.909 We need patients to stop thinking[br]that your body is not your business, 0:16:45.909,0:16:49.237 taking your power and handing it[br]over to other healthcare providers. 0:16:49.237,0:16:53.749 Your body is your business,[br]and your mind has tremendous power 0:16:53.749,0:16:59.354 to communicate with your body,[br]such that your body can heal itself. 0:16:59.354,0:17:03.405 So I once had a dream,[br]and in my dream I was standing there, 0:17:03.405,0:17:06.532 looking at these mountainsides,[br]full of millions of people 0:17:06.532,0:17:08.585 that were standing shoulder to shoulder, 0:17:08.585,0:17:11.868 and they were all facing due north,[br]dressed in all these tribal garbs, 0:17:11.868,0:17:14.915 beautiful colors covering[br]the mountainsides like a quilt. 0:17:14.915,0:17:18.238 And there was a bright[br]streaming light on their face 0:17:18.238,0:17:21.517 and everyone was facing this light, 0:17:21.517,0:17:24.174 and that's what I think of,[br]when I think of healthcare. 0:17:24.174,0:17:26.960 I think of all of us, standing up,[br]and facing the light. 0:17:26.960,0:17:29.569 So please stand with me for a moment. 0:17:29.569,0:17:31.692 It's going to take all of us. 0:17:31.692,0:17:36.368 Just because things have gotten bad[br]doesn't mean they can't get better. 0:17:36.368,0:17:40.369 I believe that just like there are[br]no incurable illnesses 0:17:40.369,0:17:42.113 there are no incurable systems. 0:17:42.113,0:17:46.226 But it's going to take all of us, needing[br]to open our heart and our minds, 0:17:46.226,0:17:48.567 and bring care back to healthcare. 0:17:48.567,0:17:50.891 So please hold hands[br]with your fellow neighbor 0:17:50.891,0:17:53.308 and let's just set[br]the intention right here, 0:17:53.308,0:17:56.706 that things are going to be[br]different from now on, 0:17:56.706,0:18:01.610 that we can start this grassroots effort[br]that it all starts with you. 0:18:01.610,0:18:05.086 Be the love that you want to[br]see in healthcare, 0:18:05.086,0:18:07.532 and I believe miracles can happen. 0:18:07.532,0:18:13.560 As we do this you're releasing oxytocin,[br]dopamine, you start to heal yourself 0:18:13.056,0:18:15.563 and as we do so we can heal healthcare. 0:18:15.563,0:18:17.398 Thank you. 0:18:17.398,0:18:22.295 (Applause)
