children were born, 00:02:07.187 --> 00:02:13.352 this sense of joy and relief when I heard their first cry. 00:02:14.615 --> 00:02:16.721 Their lungs were filled with air. 00:02:17.343 --> 00:02:23.882 It's an instinctive thing in us parents to feel great when they cry 00:02:23.906 --> 00:02:26.682 and not good when we don't hear anything. 00:02:27.690 --> 00:02:31.002 The first minute of life is often called the golden minute, 00:02:31.026 --> 00:02:32.610 because it's so important. 00:02:32.634 --> 00:02:34.997 And the reason that it's called the golden minute, 00:02:35.021 --> 00:02:40.104 is that there is a huge difference between babies who get enough oxygen 00:02:40.128 --> 00:02:43.166 in that first minute after being born 00:02:43.190 --> 00:02:45.235 and those who don't get enough. 00:02:46.539 --> 00:02:50.483 In fact, the World Health Organization has estimated 00:02:50.507 --> 00:02:57.102 that 29% of all newborn deaths around the planet 00:02:57.126 --> 00:03:01.841 come from not getting enough oxygen at birth. 00:03:01.865 --> 00:03:03.686 We call it birth asphyxia. 00:03:04.054 --> 00:03:05.839 And that's just part of the problem. 00:03:05.863 --> 00:03:10.691 There is a million kids who die every year from not getting enough oxygen. 00:03:10.715 --> 00:03:16.294 There's another million or even more who get enough oxygen to survive, 00:03:16.318 --> 00:03:17.579 but not enough to thrive, 00:03:17.603 --> 00:03:19.658 and they're left with lifelong consequences 00:03:19.682 --> 00:03:23.095 like cerebral palsy or epilepsy or learning disabilities 00:03:23.119 --> 00:03:24.990 or a developmental delay. 00:03:25.014 --> 00:03:26.824 And even that's not the whole story. 00:03:26.848 --> 00:03:29.725 One in 10 newborns around the world - 00:03:29.749 --> 00:03:31.753 in some places one in seven - 00:03:31.777 --> 00:03:35.667 get suboptimal amounts of oxygen at birth. 00:03:36.959 --> 00:03:39.839 In public health, there is this concept that's really useful, 00:03:39.863 --> 00:03:44.206 called disability-adjusted life-years, or a related concept, 00:03:44.230 --> 00:03:46.181 quality-adjusted life-years, 00:03:46.205 --> 00:03:49.254 and very simply, it's a measure of health. 00:03:49.278 --> 00:03:52.962 It's the number of years of health that are lost 00:03:52.986 --> 00:03:55.746 because of disability or disease or death. 00:03:56.900 --> 00:04:03.026 And when you look around the planet at loss of health in childhood, 00:04:03.050 --> 00:04:07.510 far and away the number one cause of kids losing health 00:04:07.534 --> 00:04:11.716 is not getting enough oxygen in the first minutes of life. 00:04:11.740 --> 00:04:15.669 The stakes couldn't get any higher than this, for children's health. Another solution would be just to get a simple bag and mask 00:04:41.428 --> 00:04:43.487 into the rooms where babies are born. 00:04:43.511 --> 00:04:45.692 It's a lot cheaper than an oxygen widespread 00:05:35.516 --> 00:05:37.059 than not getting enough oxygen, 00:05:37.083 --> 00:05:40.343 and that's not getting enough iron. 00:05:41.661 --> 00:05:43.557 Iron is central to our lifeblood. 00:05:43.581 --> 00:05:47.613 It's what allows our blood to carry oxygen to our brains and the other organs. 00:05:47.637 --> 00:05:52.502 And when we don't have enough iron, we don't make enough red cells. 00:05:52.526 --> 00:05:54.376 It's called iron deficiency anemia 00:05:54.400 --> 00:05:57.806 and it's one of the world's biggest public health problems. 00:05:58.946 --> 00:06:02.810 Iron deficiency anemia can cause poor gross motor development, 00:06:02.834 --> 00:06:05.098 it can cause poor memory, it can cause fatigue, 00:06:05.122 --> 00:06:09.076 it can cause you are 0-5 years old, in the US, 00:07:13.223 --> 00:07:19.478 together have lost 9 million IQ points from not getting enough iron. 00:07:19.502 --> 00:07:21.076 That's in the US! 00:07:21.524 --> 00:07:23.469 At a staggering price tag 00:07:23.493 --> 00:07:28.152 of about a 100 billion dollars for those kids 00:07:28.176 --> 00:07:31.023 in lifetime lost earnings 00:07:31.047 --> 00:07:33.657 because of their decreased intelligence. 00:07:34.271 --> 00:07:36.994 So if we were to spend billions of dollars 00:07:37.018 --> 00:07:38.494 to fix iron deficiency, 00:07:38.518 --> 00:07:39.856 it'd be a good investment. 00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:44.438 And one way to deal with the problem would be to manufacture 00:07:44.462 --> 00:07:47.651 and package and distribute iron supplements all over the world. 00:07:47.675 --> 00:07:50.421 And there's people doing that, it's a great idea. 00:07:50.445 --> 00:07:55.279 Tens of millions of kids have been helped, but it hasn't solved the problem. breast milk, human milk is the perfect food for human babies. 00:08:59.501 --> 00:09:01.766 Why would those be the ones at risk? 00:09:01.790 --> 00:09:04.139 I mean, it's what's got the right
