very simple answer to that question; 00:01:22.313 --> 00:01:26.974 and what made it simple is that it's just a misunderstanding 00:01:26.975 --> 00:01:30.718 that we have culturally about how the mind works. 00:01:31.216 --> 00:01:33.793 And that's what I want to talk to you about today. 00:01:33.794 --> 00:01:36.439 The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein said: 00:01:36.440 --> 00:01:37.641 "A man will be imprisoned 00:01:37.642 --> 00:01:41.767 in a room with a door that is unlocked and opens inwards 00:01:41.768 --> 00:01:46.274 as long as it does not occur to him to pull rather than to push." 00:01:47.806 --> 00:01:52.226 It's that simple, but what is that door for us? 00:01:52.241 --> 00:01:57.614 Well, in order to take you there, I want to take you back, it's 1986. 00:01:57.615 --> 00:02:01.710 And I was not a happy kid, I was a depressed kid. 00:02:01.711 --> 00:02:06.093 It didn't feel particularly that it was because I wasn't useful; 00:02:06.094 --> 00:02:09.423 I was loved I was, you know, surrounded by friends. 00:02:09.424 --> 00:02:13.458 I had no external reasons for being so unhappy, 00:02:13.459 --> 00:02:19.001 but I was so unhappy that I had a thing I now know is called suicidal ideation, 00:02:19.005 --> 00:02:22.962 which meant that I thought about killing myself a lot, 00:02:22.963 --> 00:02:26.033 all day, every day, ongoing. 00:02:27.283 --> 00:02:31.176 This wasn't as much of a problem as you might think, most of the time, 00:02:31.177 --> 00:02:34.597 because I had stuff to do, I'd have classes to go to, I had friends. 00:02:34.597 --> 00:02:36.827 But it was always going on in the background, 00:02:36.828 --> 00:02:41.854 and when it would get quiet outside, it would get really noisy inside. 00:02:41.855 --> 00:02:45.865 And this all came to a head in October of that month 00:02:45.866 --> 00:02:50.327 when I had what I now know is called a psychotic break from reality. 00:02:50.857 --> 00:02:53.358 If you want to get a sense of what that was like, 00:02:53.359 --> 00:02:56.287 imagine being in my dorm room on the fourth floor, 00:02:56.288 --> 00:02:58.969 and a giant vacuum cleaner appearing in the sky 00:02:58.970 --> 00:03:02.786 and sucking your heart out of your body and out the window. 00:03:03.426 --> 00:03:05.081 This was actually terrifying to me 00:03:05.081 --> 00:03:07.263 because it really felt like it was happening. 00:03:07.264 --> 00:03:10.465 I hung onto the wall of my dorm room, and there was a phone there. 00:03:10.466 --> 00:03:15.495 I reached down, and I dialed the number for the suicide
