0:00:00.000,0:00:04.470 Hello. Today I'm going to be talking a[br]little bit about the Task Manager. The 0:00:04.470,0:00:08.309 Task Manager lets you see what programs are running, what processes are running, and it 0:00:08.309,0:00:15.030 lets you stop programs or processes that[br]might be frozen and/or might be 0:00:15.030,0:00:20.220 consuming exhorbitant amounts of[br]resources. There are a number of 0:00:20.220,0:00:24.449 different ways that you can start the[br]Task Manager. You can right-click on the 0:00:24.449,0:00:30.060 Task Bar at the bottom of your screen[br]and choose "Start Task Manager." You can 0:00:30.060,0:00:34.050 hit Control/Alt/Delete and start[br]the Task Manager that way. My favorite 0:00:34.050,0:00:38.190 way of starting it is holding the control[br]key down, holding the shift key down, and 0:00:38.190,0:00:45.899 then hitting escape. Control/shift/escape[br]starts the Task Manager right up. And you 0:00:45.899,0:00:49.980 can see right now that I've got five[br]different applications going. You can see 0:00:49.980,0:00:56.309 what they are. In my browser I have -- I'm[br]open to a mail client. You can see I have 0:00:56.309,0:01:01.680 four messages I need to attend to. My[br]Outlook calendar. I have a Word document 0:01:01.680,0:01:06.380 open that's listing the topics that I[br]wish to discuss in Screencast-o-Matic 0:01:06.380,0:01:12.630 Screencast-o-Matic is actually the[br]program that I'm making use of. So here 0:01:12.630,0:01:17.490 I'm in Internet Explorer. I visited the[br]Screencast-o-Matic website and I'm in 0:01:17.490,0:01:23.520 the process of recording this video. All[br]of these applications are running; that's 0:01:23.520,0:01:29.310 a good thing. If you get "not responding,"[br]it might mean that the program is just 0:01:29.310,0:01:33.540 doing some work and it will respond if[br]you give it a second or two, or it might 0:01:33.540,0:01:39.299 mean that basically it's frozen it's not[br]going to work. If you have an application 0:01:39.299,0:01:45.689 that you wish to stop abruptly -- I'm going[br]to start Firefox right now just so I 0:01:45.689,0:01:52.380 have something that I can cancel. I can[br]end really quickly, and I'm not doing 0:01:52.380,0:01:58.259 anything in -- If you click on one of the[br]applications and then choose "end task" it 0:01:58.259,0:02:08.869 will end that application's running[br]immediately. So if I decided to end my -- um, 0:02:08.869,0:02:14.520 stop the Word application from running, [br]if I'd made changes to this discussing 0:02:14.520,0:02:20.340 screencast document those changes would not have been saved; it ends the process 0:02:20.340,0:02:25.080 abruptly, so you don't wish to use the[br]"end task" unless something seems to be 0:02:25.080,0:02:30.510 frozen, it's not responding, it's[br]consuming tons and tons of resources. 0:02:30.510,0:02:34.080 How do you know if a particular application[br]or process is consuming a lot of 0:02:34.080,0:02:39.780 resources.I can see right now I'm only[br]using three percent of the CPU down to 0%, 5%, 0%; 0:02:39.780,0:02:44.700 I'm not using very much at all. Physical[br]memory, also, I'm not used utilizing 0:02:44.700,0:02:48.690 very much: 20%. But suppose the[br]physical memory we're saying 80% 0:02:48.690,0:02:55.080 or 90%. Which of these,[br]if any of them, is the culprit? For that, I 0:02:55.080,0:03:01.620 could go to "Processes." Now you can take a look and see -- Wow at all those Chrome 0:03:01.620,0:03:06.810 processes! Do I actually have Chrome open[br]that many times on my computer? 0:03:06.810,0:03:13.200 No, I don't. I have opened up Chrome[br]process, but i have a few tabs open. Every 0:03:13.200,0:03:18.060 time you open up a new tab in Chrome[br]that starts a new process. I also have a 0:03:18.060,0:03:22.650 number of different extensions installed[br]in Chrome. Any time any of the extensions 0:03:22.650,0:03:26.580 are running, that's going to start up a[br]new process as well. So if you're 0:03:26.580,0:03:32.099 interested you can see these are the[br]different processes. These are the user 0:03:32.099,0:03:39.480 names of the owners of the process how[br]much CPU utilization it's using at the 0:03:39.480,0:03:45.959 moment, and at this point things are more[br]or less idle, how much memory is being 0:03:45.959,0:03:50.819 consumed and a description of what that[br]process is. If I'd like to see quickly 0:03:50.819,0:03:55.319 and easily which processes are using the[br]most memory, I can just click on "Memory" 0:03:55.319,0:04:03.950 to sort, so I can see that Chrome and[br]Internet Explorer seem to be the two 0:04:03.950,0:04:08.819 applications that are using the most[br]memory. Similarly, you could sort by any 0:04:08.819,0:04:14.310 of these different fields. There are[br]other tabs available that will give you 0:04:14.310,0:04:20.790 additional information; the contents of[br]those tabs, however, are beyond the scope 0:04:20.790,0:04:23.065 of this discussion. Thank you very much.
