0:00:00.486,0:00:03.069 When I was a child growing up in Maine, 0:00:03.069,0:00:04.974 one of my favorite things to do 0:00:04.974,0:00:08.170 was to look for sand dollars on the seashores of Maine, 0:00:08.170,0:00:10.717 because my parents told me it would bring me luck. 0:00:10.717,0:00:13.670 But you know, these shells, they're hard to find. 0:00:13.670,0:00:16.192 They're covered in sand. They're difficult to see. 0:00:16.192,0:00:20.115 However, overtime, I got used to looking for them. 0:00:20.115,0:00:21.824 I started seeing shapes 0:00:21.824,0:00:25.330 and patterns that helped me to collect them. 0:00:25.330,0:00:28.941 This grew into a passion for finding things, 0:00:28.941,0:00:31.586 a love for the past and archaeology. 0:00:31.586,0:00:34.758 And eventually when I started studying Egyptology, 0:00:34.758,0:00:39.207 I realized that seeing with my naked eyes alone wasn't enough. 0:00:39.207,0:00:42.093 Because all of the sudden in Egypt 0:00:42.093,0:00:45.792 my beach had grown from a tiny beach in Maine 0:00:45.792,0:00:47.774 to one eight hundred miles long 0:00:47.774,0:00:49.858 next to the Nile, 0:00:49.858,0:00:51.641 and my sand dollars had grown 0:00:51.641,0:00:53.955 to the size of cities. 0:00:53.955,0:00:57.134 This is really what brought me to using satellite imagery. 0:00:57.134,0:01:01.427 For trying to map the past, I knew that I had to see differently. 0:01:01.427,0:01:05.095 So I want to show you an example of how we see differently 0:01:05.095,0:01:06.846 using the infrared. 0:01:06.846,0:01:10.151 This is a site located in the eastern Egyptian delta 0:01:10.151,0:01:11.432 called Bendix. 0:01:11.432,0:01:13.964 And the site visibly appears brown, 0:01:13.964,0:01:15.997 but when we use the infrared 0:01:15.997,0:01:20.314 and we process it, all of the sudden, using false color, 0:01:20.314,0:01:22.654 the site appears as bright pink. 0:01:22.654,0:01:24.211 What you are seeing 0:01:24.211,0:01:27.360 are the actual chemical changes to the landscape 0:01:27.360,0:01:30.559 caused by the building materials and activities 0:01:30.559,0:01:32.811 of the ancient Egyptians. 0:01:32.811,0:01:35.429 What I want to share with you today 0:01:35.429,0:01:38.259 is how we've used satellite data 0:01:38.259,0:01:40.774 to find an ancient Egyptian city, 0:01:40.774,0:01:42.466 called Itjtawy, 0:01:42.466,0:01:44.669 missing for thousands of years. 0:01:44.669,0:01:47.657 Itjtawy was ancient Egypt's capital 0:01:47.657,0:01:49.575 for over four hundred years, 0:01:49.575,0:01:51.756 at a period of time called the Middle Kingdom 0:01:51.756,0:01:53.524 about four thousand years ago. 0:01:53.524,0:01:56.459 The site is located in the Faiyum of Egypt 0:01:56.459,0:01:58.707 and site is really important because in the Middle Kingdom 0:01:58.707,0:02:01.994 there was this great renaissance for ancient Egyptian art, 0:02:01.994,0:02:04.307 architecture and religion. 0:02:04.307,0:02:07.398 Egyptologists have always known the site of Itjtawy 0:02:07.398,0:02:10.498 was located somewhere near the pyramids 0:02:10.498,0:02:14.322 of the two kings who built it, indicated within the red circles here, 0:02:14.322,0:02:16.718 but somewhere within this massive flood plane. 0:02:16.718,0:02:18.179 This area is huge -- 0:02:18.179,0:02:20.773 it's four miles by three miles in size. 0:02:20.773,0:02:24.008 The Nile used to flow right next to the city of Itjtawy, 0:02:24.008,0:02:27.609 and as it shifted and changed and moved over time to the east, 0:02:27.609,0:02:29.641 it covered over the city. 0:02:29.641,0:02:33.073 So, how do you find a buried city 0:02:33.073,0:02:35.375 in a vast landscape? 0:02:35.375,0:02:37.549 Finding it randomly would be the equivalent 0:02:37.549,0:02:39.576 of locating a needle in a haystack, 0:02:39.576,0:02:42.433 blindfolded wearing baseball mitts. 0:02:42.433,0:02:46.100 So what we did is we used NASA topography data 0:02:46.100,0:02:49.024 to map out the landscape, very subtle changes. 0:02:49.024,0:02:52.441 We started to be able to see where the Nile used to flow. 0:02:52.441,0:02:55.506 But you can see in more detail -- and even more interesting -- 0:02:55.506,0:02:58.193 this very slight raised area 0:02:58.193,0:03:00.571 seen within the circle up here, which we thought could possibly be 0:03:00.571,0:03:03.008 the location of the city of Itjtawy. 0:03:03.008,0:03:05.531 So we collaborated with the Egyptian scientists 0:03:05.531,0:03:08.370 to do coring work, which you see here. 0:03:08.370,0:03:11.024 When I say coring, it's like ice coring, but instead of 0:03:11.024,0:03:14.640 layers of climate change you're looking for layers of human occupation. 0:03:14.640,0:03:16.441 And five meters down, 0:03:16.441,0:03:18.607 underneath a thick layer of mud, 0:03:18.607,0:03:21.933 we found a dense layer of pottery. 0:03:21.933,0:03:24.631 What this shows is that at this possible location 0:03:24.631,0:03:26.434 of Itjtawy, five meters down, 0:03:26.434,0:03:29.491 we have of layer of occupation for several hundred years 0:03:29.491,0:03:31.990 dating to the Middle Kingdom, dating to the exact period of time 0:03:31.990,0:03:33.764 we think Itjtawy is. 0:03:33.764,0:03:36.998 We also found work stone -- 0:03:36.998,0:03:39.331 carnelian, quartz and agate that shows 0:03:39.331,0:03:41.365 that there was a jewelers workshop here. 0:03:41.365,0:03:42.714 These might not look like much, 0:03:42.714,0:03:45.266 but when you think about the most common stones 0:03:45.266,0:03:48.034 used in jewelry from the Middle Kingdom, 0:03:48.034,0:03:50.360 these are the stones that were used. 0:03:50.360,0:03:52.832 So, we have a dense layer of occupation 0:03:52.832,0:03:54.568 dating to the Middle Kingdom at this site. 0:03:54.568,0:03:57.689 We also have evidence of an elite jewelers workshop, 0:03:57.689,0:04:01.297 showing that whatever was there was a very important city. 0:04:01.297,0:04:03.061 No Itjtawy was here yet, 0:04:03.061,0:04:05.061 but we're going to be returning to the site 0:04:05.061,0:04:07.191 in the near future to map it out. 0:04:07.191,0:04:09.414 And even more importantly, 0:04:09.414,0:04:11.714 we have funding to train young Egyptians 0:04:11.714,0:04:13.798 in the use of satellite technology 0:04:13.798,0:04:17.524 so they can be the ones making great discoveries as well. 0:04:17.524,0:04:20.644 So I wanted to end with my favorite quote 0:04:20.644,0:04:22.330 from the Middle Kingdom -- 0:04:22.330,0:04:26.623 it was probably written at the city of Itjtawy four thousand years ago. 0:04:26.623,0:04:29.891 "Sharing knowledge is the greatest of all callings. 0:04:29.891,0:04:31.742 There's nothing like it in the land." 0:04:31.742,0:04:37.745 So as it turns out, TED was not founded in 1984 AD. 0:04:37.745,0:04:39.860 (Laughter) 0:04:39.860,0:04:45.559 Making ideas actually started in 1984 BC 0:04:45.559,0:04:48.821 at a not-lost-for-long city, found from above. 0:04:48.821,0:04:53.011 It certainly puts finding seashells by the seashore in perspective. 0:04:53.011,0:04:54.797 Thank you very much. 0:04:54.797,0:04:56.653 (Applause) 0:04:56.653,0:04:57.993 Thank you. 0:04:57.993,0:04:59.493 (Applause)
