WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When Senator Harkin was retiring, and I was in the House and running for 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Senate, he called me over and he said, "Tammy, I'm handing the reins over to you." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughing) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ♪ (music) ♪ 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It has just sort of fallen to me to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 champion ADA issues, being a wheelchair user. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then, Senator Harkin was retiring and I was in the House 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and running for the Senate, he called me over 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he said, "Tammy, I'm handing the reins over to you." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) "I'm handing the torch to you. You need to be the torch bearer 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you need to really represent the entire disability community 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because you, frankly, would't be here had the disability community 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not been there before you even became disabled." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And he was absolutely right. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I find myself being the go-to person on a lot of the ADA issues 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as they come up in Congress. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ♪ (music) ♪ 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I said, yes, I was honored. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I mean, to be able to be handed the mantle from 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Tome Harkin is quite the honor. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And you know, I don't know that I can fill his shoes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I try everyday to make sure I do my best to represent the community, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but also to just fight for basic common-- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and this is what I did in the Army, I fought for freedoms, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I fought for people's rights. And this is just a basic human right, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to be able to access the life that you want to access, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and live the life that you want to live 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and to be not be confronted by barriers at every turn. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ♪ (music) ♪ 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have been working on burn pit issues for a very long time, and it started 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from just my own experience being exposed to the burn pits in Iraq. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We used to fly into Baghdad. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (cough) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We were stationed in Balad and we would fly into Baghdad 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 into the the Green Zone. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And if you were on the ground looking up, it always, just the sky, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 always just looked a little overcast. It didn't look anything, you know, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ominous, but flying through about a 50 foot, 100 foot layer of basically 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 brown skies, in the sky. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We used to burn the air crew's lungs and you would go through there like, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Oh man, my eyes are watering, my lungs are burning, and I always said 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there was gonna be some respiratory illnesses. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then I started working on Agent Orange issues within the VA, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it was under President Obama and Secretary Shinseki 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that we finally 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 granted benefits to veterans based on presumptive benefits. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, if you develop (inudible) heart disease, if you develop leukemia B, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you were in Vietnam, we're going to presume that it's 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because of your Vietnam service. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We no longer force veterans to, you know, prove that their illness 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was caused by Agent Orange, which is presumed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then, so that really started me working on burn pits 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after we were successful with the Agent Orange campaign. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And so it's pretty much been continuous ever since, and I'm really glad 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we got the contract passed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's more work to do, but it's a great, great, great, great, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 first start. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ♪ (music) ♪
