WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So recently, we heard a lot about how social media empowers protest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that's true, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but after more than a decade 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of studying and participating in multiple social movements, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I've come to realize 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that the way technology empowers social movements 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 can also paradoxically help weaken them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is not inevitable, but overcoming it requires diving deep 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 into what makes success possible 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 over the long term. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the lessons apply in multiple domains. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, take Turkey's Gezi Park protests, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 July 2013, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which I went back to study in the field. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Twitter was key to its organizing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was everywhere in the park, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 well, along with a lot of tear gas. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It wasn't all high tech. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But the people in Turkey had already gotten used to the power of Twitter 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because of an unfortunate incident 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about a year before 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when military jets had bombed and killed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 34 Kurdish smugglers near the border region, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and Turkish media completely censored this news. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Editors sat in their newsrooms 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and waited for the government to tell them what to do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One frustrated journalist could not take this anymore. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He purchased his own plane ticket, and went to the village 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where this had occurred, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he was confronted by this scene: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a line of coffins coming down a hill, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 relatives wailing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He later he told me how overwhelmed he felt, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and didn't know what to do, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so he took out his phone, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like any one of us might, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and snapped that picture and Tweeted it out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And voila, that picture went viral 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and broke the censorship and forced mass media to cover it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when, a year later, Turkey's Gezi protests happened, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it started as a protest about a park being raised, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but became an anti-authoritarian protest. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It wasn't surprising that media also censored it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it got a little ridiculous at times. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When things were so intense, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when CNN International was broadcasting live from Istanbul, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 CNN Turkey instead was broadcasting 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a documentary on penguins. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, I love penguin documentaries, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but that wasn't the news of the day. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 An angry viewer put his two screens together 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and snapped that picture, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that one too went viral, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and since then, people call Turkish media 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the penguin media. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But this time, people knew what to do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They just took out their phones and looked for actual news. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Better, they knew to go to the park 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and take pictures and participate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and share it more on social media. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Digital connectivity, that was used for everything from food to donations. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Everything was organized partially with the help of these new technologies. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And using Internet to mobilize and publicize protests 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 actually goes back a long way. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Remember the Zapatistas, the peasant uprising 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the southern Chiapas region of Mexico 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 led by the masked, pipe-smoking, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 charismatic Subcomandante Marcos? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That was probably the first movement 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that got global attention thanks to the Internet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or consider Seattle '99, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when a multinational grassroots effort 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 brought global attention 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to what was then an obscure organization, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the World Trade Organization, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by also utilizing these digital technologies to help them organize. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And more recently, movement after movement 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 has shaken country after country: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Arab uprisings from Bahrain to Tunisia to Egypt and more; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 indignados in Spain, Italy, Greece: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Gezi Park protests; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Taiwan; Euro Maidan in Ukraine; Hong Kong. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And think of more recent initiatives, like the "Bring Back Our Girls" hashtags. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Nowadays, a network of tweets 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 can unleash a global awareness campaign. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A Facebook page can become the hub of a massive mobilization. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Amazing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But think of the moments I just mentioned. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The achievements they were able to have, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 their outcomes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are not really proportional to the size and energy they inspired. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The hopes they rightfully raised are not really matched 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by what they were able to have as a result in the end. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And this raises a question: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as digital technology makes things easier for movements, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 why haven't successful outcomes become more likely as well? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In embracing digital platforms for activism and politics, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are we overlooking some of the benefits 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of doing things the hard way? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, I believe so. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I believe that the rule of thumb is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 easier to mobilize does not always mean easier to achieve gains. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, to be clear, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 technology does empower in multiple ways. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's very powerful. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Turkey, I watched four young college students 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 organize a countrywide citizen journalist network called "140 Journals" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that became the central hub for uncensored news in the country. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Egypt, I saw another four young people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 use digital connectivity to organize the supplies and logistics 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for 10 field hospitals, very large operations, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 during massive clashes near Tahrir Square 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in 2011, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I asked the founder of this effort, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 called "Tahrir Supplies," how long it took him 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to go from when he had the idea to when he got started. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Five minutes," he said. Five minutes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And he had no training or background in logistics. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or think of the Occupy movement which rocked the world in 2011. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It started with a single email 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from a magazine, Adbusters, to 90,000 subscribers in its list. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 About two months after that first email, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there were in the United States 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 600 ongoing occupations and protests. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Less than one month, less than one month 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after the first physical occupation in Zuccotti Park, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a global protest was held in about 82 countries, 950 cities. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was one of the largest global protests 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ever organized. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, compare that to what the Civil Rights Movement had to do 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in 1955 Alabama to protest 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the racially segregated bus system 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which they wanted to boycott. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They'd been preparing for many years 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and decided it was time to swing into action 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after Rosa Parks was arrested. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But how do you get the word out 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 -- You know, tomorrow we're going to start to boycott -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when you don't have Facebook, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 texting, Twitter, none of that? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So they had to mimeograph 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 52,000 leaflets 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by sneaking into a university duplicating room 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and working all night, secretly. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They then used the 68 African-American organizations 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that criss-crossed the city to distribute those leaflets by hand. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the logistical tasks were daunting, because these were poor people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They had to get to work, boycott or no, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so a massive carpool was organized, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 again by meeting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No texting, no Twitter, no Facebook. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They had to meet almost all the time 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to keep this carpool going. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Today, it would be so much easier. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We could create a database, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 available rides and what rides you need, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have the database coordinate, and use texting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We wouldn't have to need all that much. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But again, consider this: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Civil Rights Movement in the United States 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 navigated a minefield of political dangers, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 faced repression, and overcame, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 won major policy concessions, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 navigated and innovated through risks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In contrast, three years after Occupy sparked 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that global conversation about inequality, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the policies that fuel it are still in place. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Europe was also rocked by anti-austerity protests, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the continent didn't shift its direction. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In embracing these technologies, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are we overlooking some of the benefits 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of slow and sustained? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To understand this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I went back to Turkey about a year after the Gezi protests 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I interviewed a range of people, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from activists to politicians, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from both the ruling party and the opposition party and movements. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I found that the Gezi protesters were despairing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They were frustrated, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they had achieved much less than what they had hoped for. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This echoed what I'd been hearing around the world 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from many of the protesters that I'm in touch with, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I've come to realize that part of the problem 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is that today's protests 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have become a bit like climbing Mt. Everest 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with the help of 60 sherpas, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the Internet is our sherpa. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What we're doing is taking the fast routes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and not replacing the benefits of the slower work, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because you see, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the kind of work that went into organizing all those daunting, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 tedious logistical tasks 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 did not just take care of those tasks, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they also created the kind of organization 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that could think together collectively 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and make hard decisions together, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 create consensus and innovate, and maybe even more crucially, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 keep going together through differences. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when you see this March on Washington in 1963, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when you look at that picture, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where this is the march where Martin Luther King 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 gave his famous "I have a dream" speech, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 1963, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you don't just see a march 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you don't just hear a powerful speech, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you also see the painstaking, long-term work that can put on that march, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and if you're on power, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you realize you have to take the capacity signaled by that march, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not just the march, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the capacity signaled by that march, seriously. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In contrast, when you look at the Occupy's global marches 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that were organized in two weeks, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you see a lot of discontent, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but you don't necessarily see teeth that can bite 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 over the long term. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And crucially, the Civil Rights Movement 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 innovated tactically 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from boycotts to lunch counter sit-ins 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to pickets to marches to freedom rides. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Today's movements scale up very quickly without the organizational base 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that can see them through the challenges. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They feel a little like start-ups that got very big 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 without knowing what to do next, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they rarely manage to shift tactically 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because they don't have the depth of capacity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to weather such transitions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, I want to be clear: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the magic is not in the mimeograph. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's in that capacity to work together, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 think together collectively, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which can only be built over time with a lot of work. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To understand all this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I interviewed a top official from the ruling party in Turkey, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I ask him, "How do you do it?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They too use digital technology extensively, so that's not it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So what's the secret? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, he told me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He said the keys is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he never took sugar with his tea. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I said, what does that got to do with anything? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, he said, his party starts getting ready for the next election 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the day after the last one, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he spends all day every day meeting with voters in their homes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in their wedding parties, circumcision ceremonies, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then he meets with his colleagues 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to compare notes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 With that many meetings every day, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with tea offered at every one of them which he could not refuse, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because that would be rude, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he could not take even one cube of sugar 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 per cup of tea, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because that would be many kilos of sugar, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he couldn't calculate exactly how many kilos, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that point I realized why he was speaking so fast. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He had met in the afternoon, and he was already way over-caffeinated. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But his party won two major elections 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 within a year of the Gezi protests with comfortable margins. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, to be sure, governments have different resources to bring to the table. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's not the same game. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But the differences are instructive, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and like all such stories, this is not a story just of technology. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's what technology allows us to do 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 converging with what we want to do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Today's social movements want to operate informally. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They do not want institutional leadership. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They want to stay out of politics, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because they fear corruption and cooptation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They have a point: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 modern representative democracies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are being strangled in many countries by powerful interests. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But operating this way makes it hard for them 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to sustain over the long term 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and exert leverage over the system, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which leads to frustrated protesters dropping out, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and even more corrupt politics. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And politics and democracy without an effective challenge hobbles, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because the causes that have inspired the modern recent movements 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are crucial. Right? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Climate change is barreling towards us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Inequality is stifling human growth and potential and economies. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Authoritarianism is choking many countries. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We need movements to be more effective. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now some people have argued that the problem is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 today's movements are not formed of people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who take as many risks as before, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that is not true. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 From Gezi to Tahrir to elsewhere, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I've seen people put their lives and livelihoods on the line. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's also not true, as Malcolm Gladwell claimed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that today's protesters form weaker virtual ties. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No, they come to these protests just like before with their friends, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 existing networks, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and sometimes they do make friends for life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I still see the friends that I made 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in those Zapatista-convened global protests more than a decade ago, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the bonds between strangers are not worthless. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I got tear-gassed in Gezi, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people I didn't know helped me and one another instead of running away. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Tahrir, I saw people, protesters, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 working really hard to keep each other safe and protected. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And digital awareness-raising is great, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because changing minds is the bedrock of changing politics. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But movements today 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have to move beyond participation at great scale very fast 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and figure out how to think together collectively, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 develop strong policy proposals, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 create consensus, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 figure out the political steps and relate them to leverage, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because all these good intentions and bravery and sacrifice by itself 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are not going to be enough. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And there are many efforts. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In New Zealand, a group of young people are developing a platform called Lumio 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for participatory decision-making at scale. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Turkey, 140 Journals are holding hack-a-thons 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so that they support communities 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as well as citizen journalism. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In Argentina, an open-source platform called Democracy OS 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is bringing participation to parliaments and political parties. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These are all great, and we need more, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the answer won't just be better online decision-making, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because, to update 21st-century, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we are going to need to innovate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at every level, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 from the organizational to the political to the social. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because to succeed over the long term, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sometimes you do need tea without sugar 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 along with your Twitter. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause)
