0:00:18.130,0:00:19.640 So, good afternoon. 0:00:19.640,0:00:23.731 I have the most comfortable[br]TED Talk for this afternoon, 0:00:23.731,0:00:29.520 and I would like to thank you[br]first of all for being here this afternoon 0:00:29.520,0:00:34.491 and for inviting me to open[br]this wonderful event. 0:00:34.871,0:00:37.891 My mission, for those of you[br]that don't know who I am 0:00:37.891,0:00:39.600 or what Shaolin is about, 0:00:39.600,0:00:43.944 is to share some very ancient ideas 0:00:43.944,0:00:46.958 and apply them [to] the modern times. 0:00:47.648,0:00:50.820 And so when I was invited[br]to speak about ideas 0:00:50.820,0:00:55.029 and idea development[br]and idea multiplication, 0:00:55.029,0:00:58.620 I thought about which idea[br]I could share with you. 0:00:59.230,0:01:02.749 And then I reflected that, perhaps,[br]instead of sharing an idea with you, 0:01:02.749,0:01:07.801 we should talk a little bit about[br]what makes ideas become something 0:01:07.801,0:01:09.940 and why ideas often remain as ideas 0:01:09.940,0:01:13.421 and don't get developed[br]and don't get multiplied. 0:01:13.851,0:01:17.819 In Shaolin culture, there are a series[br]of, let's call them, rules 0:01:17.819,0:01:19.669 that can help us develop ideas 0:01:19.669,0:01:21.550 and can help us share ideas with others 0:01:21.550,0:01:23.980 and turn ideas into something. 0:01:23.980,0:01:27.092 And so I would like to start[br]this time together 0:01:27.092,0:01:31.203 by sharing some of these tools[br]and some of these methods. 0:01:31.633,0:01:36.632 So the first one is to take small steps. 0:01:36.632,0:01:37.951 So when you have an idea, 0:01:37.951,0:01:43.121 when you want to multiply[br]and develop this idea, 0:01:43.121,0:01:45.180 according to Shaolin culture, 0:01:45.180,0:01:48.841 to make a big change,[br]to make a big revolution, 0:01:48.841,0:01:51.711 to start with this idea[br]to make a big revolution 0:01:51.711,0:01:52.971 is a big challenge. 0:01:52.971,0:01:56.021 And it's a challenge so big[br]and so overwhelming 0:01:56.021,0:01:58.970 that often leaves the idea undeveloped. 0:01:58.970,0:02:02.180 So the Shaolin approach[br]is to take small steps, 0:02:02.180,0:02:03.770 but take that step. 0:02:03.770,0:02:05.580 Don't let the idea be forgotten. 0:02:05.580,0:02:08.231 Don't let the idea[br]disappear and dissipate. 0:02:08.231,0:02:10.032 Take a small step today, 0:02:10.032,0:02:11.571 and take a small step tomorrow, 0:02:11.571,0:02:13.450 and take a small step the next day - 0:02:13.450,0:02:15.611 and through a whole series[br]of small steps, 0:02:15.611,0:02:19.191 through an evolutionary[br]rather than a revolutionary process 0:02:19.191,0:02:20.552 the idea can take place, 0:02:20.552,0:02:24.141 and the idea can dissipate and propagate 0:02:24.141,0:02:26.651 much, much further[br]than with a big approach, 0:02:26.651,0:02:30.661 which often just simply[br]is too big to undertake. 0:02:31.501,0:02:35.430 The second rule of the Shaolin[br]idea of development 0:02:35.430,0:02:38.580 is to accept mistakes, 0:02:38.580,0:02:41.042 and in fact, to welcome mistakes 0:02:41.042,0:02:47.732 as a necessary, indispensable part[br]of developing and spreading ideas. 0:02:48.142,0:02:52.180 So, if you make no mistakes,[br]you're actually not doing anything new. 0:02:52.180,0:02:53.571 You're not trying anything. 0:02:53.571,0:02:55.280 You really don't have an idea. 0:02:55.280,0:02:59.419 If you have ideas, and if the ideas[br]are new and stimulating and challenging, 0:02:59.419,0:03:02.542 they will invariably lead to mistakes. 0:03:02.542,0:03:05.120 And, you know, this morning[br]when I arrived here, 0:03:05.120,0:03:10.420 I was shown this amazing institute[br]and educational facilities. 0:03:10.420,0:03:14.831 And school is a great learning process, 0:03:14.831,0:03:15.921 but at the same time, 0:03:15.921,0:03:20.422 in Shaolin, we tend to say that school[br]is a little bit the opposite of life. 0:03:20.812,0:03:22.881 And the reason why[br]it's the opposite of life 0:03:22.881,0:03:28.259 is because in school you learn a lesson,[br]and then you have an exam. 0:03:28.259,0:03:32.401 And in life, you have an exam,[br]and then you learn the lesson. 0:03:32.401,0:03:36.380 And so there are going to be[br]a lot of exams that you don't pass, 0:03:36.380,0:03:39.461 and the process of developing ideas[br]and trying new things 0:03:39.461,0:03:41.311 means making all these mistakes, 0:03:41.311,0:03:45.030 means having lots of exams[br]that we don't pass. 0:03:45.030,0:03:47.321 But with every exam, we learn a new lesson 0:03:47.321,0:03:51.631 and we develop our ideas further[br]and we propagate them further. 0:03:52.911,0:03:57.713 And the third Shaolin rule[br]about idea development 0:03:57.713,0:04:00.322 is to apply discipline. 0:04:00.662,0:04:04.230 So discipline is a very, very important[br]concept in Shaolin culture 0:04:04.230,0:04:06.010 because discipline is, in a way, 0:04:06.010,0:04:11.050 the tool that allows us to develop[br]whatever it is that we want to develop. 0:04:11.050,0:04:15.832 Without discipline, we cannot reach[br]the targets we want to reach; 0:04:15.832,0:04:19.039 we cannot develop the ideas[br]we want to develop, and so on. 0:04:19.039,0:04:23.390 So discipline in Shaolin is not seen[br]as a kind of burden and a heavy task, 0:04:23.390,0:04:25.240 but it's seen as like the enabler. 0:04:25.240,0:04:29.410 It's the empowering tool that I need[br]to develop what I need to develop 0:04:29.410,0:04:32.540 or to propagate the idea[br]that I wish to propagate. 0:04:32.540,0:04:37.520 The next rule about Shaolin[br]idea-development processes 0:04:37.520,0:04:43.200 is to focus more on the journey[br]and less on the destination. 0:04:43.200,0:04:45.222 You know, ideas are a journey. 0:04:45.222,0:04:48.350 The process of turning an idea[br]from the first thought 0:04:48.350,0:04:53.445 to some kind of great project[br]or great result - 0:04:54.199,0:04:55.260 it's a process. 0:04:55.260,0:05:00.171 And this process is a journey,[br]and in that journey is the real process. 0:05:00.171,0:05:04.489 Not in some kind of utopic destination,[br]which I might reach or I might not, 0:05:04.489,0:05:07.519 because how many ideas[br]have started in one direction, 0:05:07.519,0:05:09.809 and then as you were traveling[br]towards that idea, 0:05:09.809,0:05:12.959 you realize it was something else there[br]that you should go towards, 0:05:12.959,0:05:14.630 and then something else, and so on? 0:05:14.630,0:05:16.859 So the journey is the very process 0:05:16.859,0:05:20.129 of developing and of spreading[br]and of growing of an idea. 0:05:20.129,0:05:23.050 But too often, we just focus[br]on the destination. 0:05:23.050,0:05:25.980 We have some result in mind[br]or some objective in mind, 0:05:25.980,0:05:30.000 and everything is focused on that,[br]and we lose perspective. 0:05:30.000,0:05:32.931 So in Shaolin culture,[br]the destination is important 0:05:32.931,0:05:36.373 because it gives us a bearing[br]on where to take our idea, 0:05:36.373,0:05:39.880 but the journey is the far,[br]far more important moment 0:05:39.880,0:05:42.431 and more important process. 0:05:42.431,0:05:48.001 And the next rule[br]is to focus on the present moment 0:05:48.001,0:05:51.840 because the present moment[br]is where the journey takes place. 0:05:51.840,0:05:56.079 So the only real moment[br]is this time in this room right now. 0:05:56.079,0:05:58.260 The past is just a memory in our minds, 0:05:58.260,0:06:02.430 and the future is just[br]a collective thought in our mind. 0:06:02.430,0:06:03.819 So to focus on the present 0:06:03.819,0:06:09.050 and to apply yourself in that present[br]to develop the idea 0:06:09.050,0:06:10.870 by taking, perhaps, small steps. 0:06:10.870,0:06:13.511 Maybe today you are very busy[br]and have many other things 0:06:13.511,0:06:16.051 and don't have the time[br]or the resources or whatever, 0:06:16.051,0:06:20.000 but you can take a small step[br]to make sure that that idea doesn't stop, 0:06:20.000,0:06:24.829 that idea continues to evolve[br]and to propagate and to develop. 0:06:25.429,0:06:28.080 And when you are doing this[br]in the present, 0:06:28.080,0:06:29.199 there is the next rule, 0:06:29.199,0:06:31.750 which is to do it with as much passion, 0:06:31.750,0:06:33.320 with as much heart, 0:06:33.320,0:06:36.550 with as much determination[br]as you can muster. 0:06:36.550,0:06:39.750 You know, a famous master once said 0:06:39.750,0:06:45.450 that somewhere there is[br]a museum of procrastination. 0:06:45.450,0:06:47.290 And in this museum of procrastination, 0:06:47.290,0:06:50.400 there are the greatest books[br]never written, 0:06:50.400,0:06:53.261 the greatest inventions never produced, 0:06:53.261,0:06:55.280 and so on and so forth. 0:06:55.280,0:07:00.819 So don't allow your idea to end up[br]in that museum of procrastination, 0:07:00.819,0:07:02.670 by applying yourself with discipline, 0:07:02.670,0:07:06.072 and by applying yourself[br]with passion and with care 0:07:06.442,0:07:07.820 in the small step - 0:07:07.820,0:07:12.031 not in the big step but in the small step[br]in the present moment. 0:07:12.791,0:07:16.180 And the next and second last rule 0:07:16.180,0:07:21.660 of this Shaolin idea-development[br]and idea-propagation process 0:07:22.310,0:07:26.340 is to do everything you do with values. 0:07:26.340,0:07:28.791 So values are a kind of platform 0:07:28.791,0:07:32.250 that supports and gives[br]meaning to your ideas. 0:07:32.250,0:07:33.700 And when I speak about values, 0:07:33.700,0:07:38.850 I mean things like respect,[br]trust, passion, 0:07:38.850,0:07:44.520 discipline, compassion,[br]courage, and so on and so forth. 0:07:44.520,0:07:49.330 And these values are the fundamental tool,[br]the fundamental building block, 0:07:49.330,0:07:53.091 on which any kind of idea[br]development and idea propagation 0:07:53.091,0:07:54.972 should be developed from. 0:07:55.362,0:07:56.760 Without the values, 0:07:56.760,0:07:59.809 any idea-development process[br]will lose meaning 0:07:59.809,0:08:03.089 and any idea-propagation process[br]will lose meaning. 0:08:03.089,0:08:04.559 Because what will give meaning 0:08:04.559,0:08:08.631 to that interaction between two people[br]and five people and a hundred people 0:08:08.631,0:08:10.371 is the values that they share. 0:08:10.371,0:08:12.201 And what will make the idea strong, 0:08:12.201,0:08:16.341 and what will make the performance of[br]the people that develop this idea strong 0:08:16.341,0:08:19.358 will be the values they share,[br]not the competencies. 0:08:19.358,0:08:21.759 The competencies you can get. 0:08:21.759,0:08:23.029 You probably already have; 0:08:23.029,0:08:25.499 that's why you're involved[br]in that process. 0:08:25.499,0:08:27.660 But the values that you share[br]with each other 0:08:27.660,0:08:29.690 will give it meaning[br]and will give it power 0:08:29.690,0:08:32.300 and will make the idea go very far. 0:08:33.200,0:08:35.900 The last one of these Shaolin rules 0:08:35.900,0:08:39.270 is actually, possibly,[br]the most fundamental one, 0:08:39.270,0:08:42.531 the one from which all[br]of this process should start from. 0:08:42.991,0:08:45.139 And it's the idea of being free, 0:08:45.139,0:08:46.630 of letting go of your fears, 0:08:46.630,0:08:48.591 of embracing change. 0:08:48.591,0:08:50.429 Ideas need change. 0:08:50.429,0:08:53.310 Ideas themselves are a process of change. 0:08:53.310,0:08:56.051 And so without the courage[br]to let go of your fears, 0:08:56.051,0:08:57.520 to let go of your barriers, 0:08:57.520,0:08:59.722 to get out of your comfort zone, 0:08:59.722,0:09:01.691 it's going to be very, very difficult - 0:09:01.691,0:09:04.251 possibly not simply possible - 0:09:04.251,0:09:06.571 to develop any ideas. 0:09:06.571,0:09:12.222 And so what I would like to do today[br]to conclude this very short time together 0:09:12.222,0:09:15.061 is to get you out[br]of your comfort zone a little bit, 0:09:15.061,0:09:18.750 to make you do something that -[br]it's a new idea for most of you 0:09:18.750,0:09:21.771 because it's something[br]you have no familiarity with, 0:09:21.771,0:09:24.300 and it hopefully will get[br]a little bit of that energy, 0:09:24.300,0:09:26.692 a little bit of that passion, out of you 0:09:27.044,0:09:30.180 so that you can then apply[br]that passion and that energy 0:09:30.180,0:09:33.691 and that free-spiritedness[br]of being out of your comfort zone 0:09:33.691,0:09:35.911 to the whole rest[br]of the afternoon together 0:09:35.911,0:09:38.621 with the wonderful speeches[br]and the wonderful ideas 0:09:38.621,0:09:40.351 that will be presented after me. 0:09:40.351,0:09:44.400 And to do this,[br]I ask you to please stand up. 0:09:51.101,0:09:54.291 So, we will do a little exercise together, 0:09:54.291,0:09:58.701 and to do this exercise,[br]the first step is to learn the exercise. 0:09:58.701,0:10:01.181 So, before we can use something,[br]we have to learn it, 0:10:01.181,0:10:03.301 and then when we learn it, we can use it. 0:10:03.301,0:10:06.441 So we will learn it very quickly[br]together - it's very, very simple. 0:10:06.441,0:10:08.459 It will take maybe one minute to learn it. 0:10:08.459,0:10:10.601 And I will turn the same way like you 0:10:10.601,0:10:13.921 so that you don't get confused[br]left, right and so on. 0:10:13.921,0:10:16.938 So what we do is we stand[br]in a very natural way, 0:10:16.938,0:10:19.552 and we breathe in, 0:10:20.062,0:10:24.360 and we breathe out, very deeply. 0:10:24.360,0:10:26.949 And then after we've finished[br]with the breathing, 0:10:26.949,0:10:28.751 we breathe in again, 0:10:28.751,0:10:32.360 and we bring our fists to our sides. 0:10:32.360,0:10:36.171 And from this position,[br]we will do three things, three movements. 0:10:36.171,0:10:39.990 The first one is we'll step[br]with the left leg forward, 0:10:39.990,0:10:43.001 and we push with our left hand forward, 0:10:43.001,0:10:44.862 and we breathe out. 0:10:45.622,0:10:47.790 Then we step back, 0:10:48.130,0:10:53.081 and we hit our right fist[br]on our left hand, 0:10:53.481,0:10:55.810 and then we step again to the left, 0:10:55.810,0:11:00.259 but this time, we punch[br]with our right hand forward. 0:11:01.039,0:11:02.861 And then we go back. 0:11:03.291,0:11:05.441 So, the more I hear laughter, 0:11:05.441,0:11:07.770 the more it means[br]you're out of your comfort zone, 0:11:07.770,0:11:11.770 and that's how you're dealing with[br]the uncomfortableness -
