0:00:00.000,0:00:05.010 [music playing] 0:00:28.594,0:00:32.890 Hi, I'm Tisha. Welcome to the Northwood InTouch Demonstration suite. 0:00:32.906,0:00:38.523 We're here today to talk about dementia, and the impact that it can have on caregivers. 0:00:39.359,0:00:45.461 Worry, fear of wandering, concern for safety - loss of sleep and burnout. 0:00:45.461,0:00:50.323 They're all things that we hear from families who are contacting us to look for our service. 0:00:50.523,0:00:55.154 Sometimes families are trying their best in order to look after someone at home, 0:00:55.154,0:00:57.457 because that's where someone wants to stay, 0:00:57.457,0:01:03.412 And in other cases, it's trying to make do until a nursing home bed becomes available. 0:01:03.673,0:01:05.899 Today we're going to talk about different solutions 0:01:05.899,0:01:13.118 that are easy to use, easy to install, and can change as people's needs change. 0:01:13.148,0:01:16.029 We've set up this demonstration suite here at Northwood 0:01:16.029,0:01:19.356 because the technology is new and not many people have seen it. 0:01:19.386,0:01:24.075 This space allows people to come in and check it out for themselves. 0:01:24.075,0:01:28.866 So we use it to educate clients, healthcare professionals, 0:01:28.866,0:01:32.100 and to test all of our equipment before it goes out in the field. 0:01:32.100,0:01:37.078 So, come with me, I'll show you what some of the latest technology we have to offer can do. 0:01:40.047,0:01:42.761 As we look at the various technologies in the demo suite, 0:01:42.761,0:01:47.243 I'd like you to keep in mind that each of the sensors can be used in a number of different ways, 0:01:47.243,0:01:49.742 based on someone's individual needs. 0:01:49.742,0:01:54.828 Starting here in the kitchen, we're at the stove, and we have a stove sensor. 0:01:54.828,0:01:58.961 This sensor helps to prevent unintended cooking fires. 0:01:58.961,0:02:02.986 And it can be used in one of three different ways, depending on someone's needs. 0:02:02.986,0:02:08.133 Basically, it acts as a sensor that looks for motion, 0:02:08.133,0:02:11.794 has a timer, and if someone were to leave the stove area, 0:02:11.794,0:02:13.907 it shuts the stove off. 0:02:13.907,0:02:15.700 So that's the first way it can be used. 0:02:15.700,0:02:19.829 The second way is that if someone's unsuitable to be around the stove 0:02:19.829,0:02:23.960 at a certain time of day, then we can lock the stove down 0:02:23.960,0:02:26.324 for that period of time. 0:02:26.324,0:02:30.490 An example might be if the person is exhibiting "sundowning" symptoms, 0:02:30.490,0:02:34.656 they're getting up in the middle of the night, and they're posing a risk getting around the stove 0:02:34.656,0:02:36.577 when no one is around. 0:02:36.577,0:02:41.190 Then we can have it so that the stove will not turn on during the overnight hours. 0:02:41.190,0:02:45.859 The third way that the sensor can be used is to lock down the stove completely. 0:02:45.859,0:02:51.412 So for someone who's not safe to be around the stove, this is probably the most appropriate setting. 0:02:51.412,0:02:57.357 And the way that it can be used is only when a key is inserted into the device 0:02:57.357,0:03:02.027 by a family member, caregiver, or by a home support worker. 0:03:03.674,0:03:08.689 Now we're in the bedroom, and the next sensor I'd like to show you is the bed sensor. 0:03:08.689,0:03:13.201 It's this long white pad, that gets slipped underneath the mattress of the bed. 0:03:13.201,0:03:18.791 It gets connected into this box, which gets then tucked underneath the bed itself. 0:03:19.529,0:03:23.293 This device is great to give caregivers more peace of mind. 0:03:23.293,0:03:28.080 If they're worried about someone wandering, getting up, maybe getting around the stove, 0:03:28.080,0:03:32.756 or, perhaps, injuring themselves by having a fall getting out of bed, 0:03:32.756,0:03:36.827 This is really going to allow families to have a better night's sleep, 0:03:36.827,0:03:41.794 knowing that as soon as someone gets out of bed, an alarm is going to be generated. 0:03:41.794,0:03:47.659 So, just like the other sensors we're talking about, it can be programmed in a couple of different ways. 0:03:47.659,0:03:53.395 One is that as soon as someone gets out of bed, it sends a call immediately to a caregiver 0:03:53.395,0:03:55.910 to notify them that someone is out of bed. 0:03:55.910,0:04:02.123 The second way is to program a slight delay, that allows someone time to get to the bathroom, 0:04:02.123,0:04:06.260 and then back to bed again. If they don't return within that amount of time, 0:04:06.260,0:04:08.526 then the call is placed. 0:04:08.526,0:04:15.524 That call can be placed to a caregiver, or maybe the call can be placed to our emergency response center, 0:04:15.524,0:04:18.966 depending on what that person would like to have happen. 0:04:20.150,0:04:25.242 The final sensor I'd like to share with you today is our automatic pill dispenser. 0:04:25.242,0:04:30.761 This device means peace of mind for family members who are concerned about someone 0:04:30.761,0:04:33.976 and how they may or may not be taking their pills. 0:04:34.145,0:04:40.290 The device can hold up to 28 doses of medication, that goes in this tray, 0:04:40.290,0:04:45.405 and up to four alarms can be programmed to go off at various times each day. 0:04:45.405,0:04:51.963 Once the pills are loaded, and the alarm times are chosen, the cover goes on the device, 0:04:51.963,0:04:54.076 and the device gets locked. 0:04:54.076,0:04:56.355 The caregiver can take this key with them, 0:04:56.355,0:05:01.427 and then they can be assured that there is no risk of accidental overdosing, 0:05:01.427,0:05:04.956 or confusion around which pill to take at what time. 0:05:04.956,0:05:13.261 With each alarm, the tray inside turns, providing only the dose that corresponds with that time. 0:05:14.384,0:05:19.910 If the person doesn't take their medications at that time for some reason, misses the alarm, 0:05:19.910,0:05:24.742 the caregiver is going to get a call by phone notifying them that a dose has been missed. 0:05:24.742,0:05:28.361 And then they can follow up with the person as needed. 0:05:30.222,0:05:33.992 On our tour today, we've looked at three different technologies 0:05:33.992,0:05:38.393 that can help to keep people with dementia safe at home. 0:05:38.393,0:05:45.227 I hope you've also seen that the technology can provide a huge sense of comfort, security, 0:05:45.227,0:05:48.434 and peace of mind to the caregivers as well. 0:05:48.434,0:05:53.159 If you want to learn more about the different sensors and technology that we offer here at Northwood, 0:05:53.159,0:05:55.691 you're welcome to book your own tour, 0:05:55.691,0:06:02.857 or you can visiti us online at www.northwoodintouch.ca. 0:06:02.857,0:06:15.153 Or you can give us a call at 1-800-461-3346, or in the Halifax area at 492-3346. 0:06:15.153,0:06:17.057 Thanks for visiting. 0:06:17.057,0:06:21.065 [music playing]
