Ubuntu Edge: introducing the hardware

  • 0:00 - 0:03
Convergence is the future of computing.
  • 0:03 - 0:10
So we've reshaped Ubuntu to combine the mobility of a smartphone and the power of a desktop on a single device.
  • 0:10 - 0:14
We unveiled "Ubuntu for Phones" at Mobile World Congress in February
  • 0:14 - 0:17
and CNET declared it the BEST OF SHOW.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    Operators love the design
  • 0:20 - 0:23
and some of the world's largest have now joined our advisory group.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
We have also gained the support of key silicon vendors to the mobile industry,
  • 0:27 - 0:33
so now, finally, we are talking to the companies who actually make phones,
  • 0:33 - 0:39
with the goal that Ubuntu will arrive on mid an high end devices in 2014, right on schedule.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
Along the way we learned something really interesting.
  • 0:42 - 0:48
We learned that new mobile technologies get proven in the lab but then hit a production road block,
  • 0:48 - 0:55
because manufacurers don't want to select a new technology for device that are supposed to sell ten or fifty million units,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
until they know it can ben produced at that scale.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
I mean, in the motorcar industry we have the Formula 1 to test new technology,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
but the mobile industry has nothing like that.
  • 1:04 - 1:11
There is no premium segment for expert driver, is like everyone is driving mass produced sedans.
  • 1:11 - 1:20
We don't have a consumer testbed for cutting edge technologies, but we do have a new mechanism for driving innovation: crowdfunding!
  • 1:20 - 1:28
Since the Ubuntu vision of convergence for the phone and the PC will push the limit of mobile computing and since we are working with industry already,
  • 1:28 - 1:34
and since millions of you are passionate about the latest and greatest phone technologies software and hardware
  • 1:34 - 1:40
we are in a perfect position toghether, to change the way innovation comes to the mobile industry.
  • 1:40 - 1:46
So, we have explored every aspect of the phone, spoken to companies that have interest in next generation technologies
  • 1:46 - 1:56
and drawned up the blueprint for a concept device that brings together the most exciting innovations that are real, but still on the horizon.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
We called it the "Ubuntu Edge".
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    Beautifull, inside and out.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
The body will be crafted from a single piece of textured metal,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
making it really solid in your hand.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
It will have precisely chamfered edges for the optimal grip,
  • 2:13 - 2:19
and perfect control of the edge gestures that are central to the Ubuntu mobile experience.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
The display is the window into your content.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
The phone industry today is a bit like the camera industry five years ago:
  • 2:26 - 2:31
stucked in the megapixel race, chasing wasted resolution.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
What's much more interesting is color accuracy and brightness,
  • 2:35 - 2:44
so we'll select the panel with the best combination of: resolution, dynamic range and color accuracy.
  • 2:44 - 2:50
The size of Edge screen has to be just right for Edge gestures to give you total control in one hand.
  • 2:50 - 2:55
Based on our testing with prototypes, a 4.5 inches screen is the perfect size,
  • 2:55 - 3:01
and to protect the display we will replace glass with sapphire crystal,
  • 3:01 - 3:05
a material so hard you'll need diamonds in your pocket to leave a scratch.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
The same goes for the camera,
  • 3:08 - 3:12
because phone cameras are used for personal shots, without stage lighting,
  • 3:12 - 3:19
so we'd like to optimize for low light, fast response and upclose pictures, rather than just megapixels.
  • 3:19 - 3:23
If you are like us, you travel a lot and you love bandwith.
  • 3:23 - 3:28
Today's phones fall back to slower older protocols when they roam,
  • 3:28 - 3:32
but future phones will have access to LTE everywhere.
  • 3:32 - 3:40
So we'll raise the bar with dual LTE antennas, for full speed 4G in both Europe and the USA.
  • 3:40 - 3:47
Convergence is the key idea we are exploring,
  • 3:47 - 3:48
so this phone needs to be a potent little PC when docked.
  • 3:48 - 3:53
We'll select the very latest, fastest multicore processor as we finalize the design
  • 3:53 - 3:59
along with at least 4 GB of RAM and a massive 128 GB of storage.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
It is going to redefine PC portability.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
Finally, one of the key areas of innovation today is the battery.
  • 4:06 - 4:13
We selected silicon-anode technology as the most promising candidate for extended life and power density.
  • 4:13 - 4:19
This project is all about cutting edge hardware, but being Ubuntu, we can push the limits of software too.
  • 4:19 - 4:23
As well as Ubuntu you will be able to boot Android,
  • 4:23 - 4:30
so you can keep using your existing app collection and experience full convergence, right away with Ubuntu for Android.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
Now, we are not trying to get into the phone business,
  • 4:33 - 4:37
we are working with phone companies for normal, mid and high-end phones.
  • 4:37 - 4:41
This project is just for us, the real enthusiasts.
  • 4:41 - 4:49
That's why a crowdfunding approach is perfect, if there are enough of use interested in pushing the limits of the phone, then it will happen.
  • 4:49 - 4:54
The "Ubuntu Edge" will be a limited edition production run available only to supporters of this campaign.
  • 4:54 - 5:00
If it works well, we might even do it anually, just to keep the head of the curve.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
If you are like us, you are a little impatient to experience the future.
  • 5:04 - 5:08
You like to try every new device, just to see how they are improving.
  • 5:08 - 5:15
And with this project, for the first time, you'll have the ability to try the most exciting technologies long before everyone else.
  • 5:15 - 5:19
To make it happen, we'll have to smash every record in crowdfunding history,
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    it's a crazy, beautifull idea.
  • 5:22 - 5:26
But if there are enough of us out there, enough enthusiast who want
  • 5:26 - 5:30
the ultimate in performace, storage, screen and bandwidth,
  • 5:30 - 5:40
than the "Ubuntu Edge" will be the catalyst for awesome innovation, and a taste of the future of the phone.
