How to "sketch" with electronics
-
0:01 - 0:05Today, I'm going to talk to you about sketching electronics.
-
0:05 - 0:11I'm, among several other things, an electrical engineer,
-
0:11 - 0:14and that means that I spend a good amount of time
-
0:14 - 0:19designing and building new pieces of technology,
-
0:19 - 0:23and more specifically designing and building electronics.
-
0:23 - 0:28And what I've found is that the process of designing
-
0:28 - 0:33and building electronics is problematic in all sorts of ways.
-
0:33 - 0:38So it's a really slow process, it's really expensive,
-
0:38 - 0:40and the outcome of that process,
-
0:40 - 0:43namely electronic circuit boards,
-
0:43 - 0:46are limited in all sorts of kind of interesting ways.
-
0:46 - 0:49So they're really small, generally, they're square
-
0:49 - 0:54and flat and hard, and frankly, most of them
-
0:54 - 0:58just aren't very attractive, and so my team and I
-
0:58 - 1:02have been thinking of ways to really change and mix up
-
1:02 - 1:07the process and the outcome of designing electronics.
-
1:07 - 1:11And so what if you could design and build electronics
-
1:11 - 1:15like this? So what if you could do it extremely quickly,
-
1:15 - 1:21extremely inexpensively, and maybe more interestingly,
-
1:21 - 1:26really fluidly and expressively and even improvisationally?
-
1:26 - 1:29Wouldn't that be so cool, and that wouldn't that open up
-
1:29 - 1:32all sorts of new possibilities?
-
1:32 - 1:35I'm going to share with you two projects that are
-
1:35 - 1:40investigations along these lines, and we'll start with this one.
-
1:40 - 1:45(Video) Magnetic electronic pieces and ferrous paper.
-
1:45 - 1:49A conductive pen from the Lewis lab at UIUC.
-
1:49 - 1:52Sticker templates.
-
1:52 - 1:55Speed x 4.
-
2:10 - 2:14Making a switch.
-
2:22 - 2:25Music: DJ Shadow.
-
2:40 - 2:43Adding some intelligence with a microcontroller.
-
2:57 - 3:00Sketching an interface.
-
3:04 - 3:12(Music)
-
3:14 - 3:18(Laughter)
-
3:18 - 3:24(Applause)
-
3:24 - 3:27Pretty cool, huh? We think so.
-
3:27 - 3:30So now that we developed these tools
-
3:30 - 3:34and found these materials that let us do these things,
-
3:34 - 3:38we started to realize that, essentially, anything
-
3:38 - 3:41that we can do with paper, anything that we can do
-
3:41 - 3:43with a piece of paper and a pen
-
3:43 - 3:45we can now do with electronics.
-
3:45 - 3:48So the next project that I want to show you is kind of a
-
3:48 - 3:51deeper exploration of that possibility.
-
3:51 - 3:55And I'll kind of let it speak for itself.
-
3:55 - 5:26(Music)
-
5:26 - 5:31(Applause)
-
5:31 - 5:36So the next step for us in this process
-
5:36 - 5:40is now to find a way to let all of you
-
5:40 - 5:42build things like this,
-
5:42 - 5:46and so the way that we're approaching that is by
-
5:46 - 5:48teaching workshops to people where we explain
-
5:48 - 5:51how they can use these kinds of tools, and then also
-
5:51 - 5:55working to get the tools and the materials and techniques
-
5:55 - 5:59out into the real world in a variety of ways.
-
5:59 - 6:02And so sometime soon, you'll be able to play and build
-
6:02 - 6:06and sketch with electronics in this fundamentally new way.
-
6:06 - 6:10So thank you very much. (Applause)

- How to "sketch" with electronics
- Speaker:
- Leah Buechley
- Description:
-
Designing electronics is generally cumbersome and expensive -- or was, until Leah Buechley and her team at MIT developed tools to treat electronics just like paper and pen. In this talk from TEDYouth 2011, Buechley shows some of her charming designs, like a paper piano you can sketch and then play.
