    I felt like I'd been living two different lives.

    There's the life that everyone sees,

    and then there's the life that only I see.

    And in the life that everyone sees,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    who I am is a friend,
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    a son, a brother,
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    a stand-up comedian and a teenager.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    That's the life everyone sees.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    If you were to ask my friends and family to describe me,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    that's what they would tell you.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    And that's a huge part of me. That is who I am.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    And if you were to ask me to describe myself,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    I'd probably say some of those same things.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    And I wouldn't be lying,
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    but I wouldn't totally be telling you the truth, either,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    because the truth is,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    that's just the life everyone else sees.

    In the life that only I see, who I am,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    who I really am,
  • 0:56 - 1:01
    is someone who struggles intensely with depression.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    I have for the last six years of my life,
  • 1:04 - 1:09
    and I continue to every day.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    Now, for someone who has never experienced depression
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    or doesn't really know what that means,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    that might surprise them to hear,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    because there's this pretty popular misconception
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    that depression is just being sad
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    when something in your life goes wrong,
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    when you break up with your girlfriend,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    when you lose a loved one,
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    when you don't get the job you wanted.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    But that's sadness. That's a natural thing.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    That's a natural human emotion.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    Real depression isn't being sad
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    when something in your life goes wrong.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    Real depression is being sad
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    when everything in your life is going right.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    That's real depression, and that's what I suffer from.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    And to be totally honest,
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    that's hard for me to stand up here and say.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    It's hard for me to talk about,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    and it seems to be hard for everyone to talk about,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    so much so that no one's talking about it.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    And no one's talking about depression, but we need to be,
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    because right now it's a massive problem.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    It's a massive problem.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    But we don't see it on social media, right?
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    We don't see it on Facebook. We don't see it on Twitter.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    We don't see it on the news, because it's not happy,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    it's not fun, it's not light.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    And so because we don't see it, we don't see the severity of it.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    But the severity of it and the seriousness of it is this:
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    every 30 seconds,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    every 30 seconds, somewhere,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    someone in the world takes their own life
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    because of depression,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    and it might be two blocks away, it might be two countries away,
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    it might be two continents away, but it's happening,
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    and it's happening every single day.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    And we have a tendency, as a society,
  • 2:35 - 2:40
    to look at that and go, "So what?"
  • 2:40 - 2:45
    So what? We look at that, and we go, "That's your problem.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    That's their problem."
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    We say we're sad and we say we're sorry,
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    but we also say, "So what?"
  • 2:50 - 2:55
    Well, two years ago it was my problem,
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    because I sat on the edge of my bed
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    where I'd sat a million times before
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    and I was suicidal.
  • 3:05 - 3:09
    I was suicidal, and if you were to look at my life on the surface,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    you wouldn't see a kid who was suicidal.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    You'd see a kid who was the captain of his basketball team,
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    the drama and theater student of the year,
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    the English student of the year,
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    someone who was consistently on the honor roll
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    and consistently at every party.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    So you would say I wasn't depressed, you would say
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    I wasn't suicidal, but you would be wrong.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    You would be wrong. So I sat there that night
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    beside a bottle of pills with a pen and paper in my hand
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    and I thought about taking my own life
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    and I came this close to doing it.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    I came this close to doing it.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    And I didn't, so that makes me one of the lucky ones,
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    one of the people who gets to step out on the ledge
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    and look down but not jump,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    one of the lucky ones who survives.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    Well, I survived, and that just leaves me with my story,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    and my story is this:
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    In four simple words, I suffer from depression.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    I suffer from depression,
  • 3:59 - 4:06
    and for a long time, I think,
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    I was living two totally different lives,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    where one person was always afraid of the other.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    I was afraid that people would see me for who I really was,
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    that I wasn't the perfect, popular kid in high school everyone thought I was,
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    that beneath my smile, there was struggle,
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    and beneath my light, there was dark,
  • 4:20 - 4:25
    and beneath my big personality just hid even bigger pain.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    See, some people might fear girls not liking them back.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    Some people might fear sharks. Some people might fear death.
  • 4:30 - 4:34
    But for me, for a large part of my life, I feared myself.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    I feared my truth, I feared my honesty, I feared my vulnerability,
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    and that fear made me feel
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    like I was forced into a corner,
  • 4:41 - 4:45
    like I was forced into a corner and there was only one way out,
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    and so I thought about that way every single day.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    I thought about it every single day,
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    and if I'm being totally honest, standing here
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    I've thought about it again since, because that's the sickness,
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    that's the struggle, that's depression,
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    and depression isn't chicken pox.
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    You don't beat it once and it's gone forever.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    It's something you live with. It's something you live in.
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    It's the roommate you can't kick out. It's the voice you can't ignore.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    It's the feelings you can't seem to escape,
  • 5:08 - 5:13
    the scariest part is that after a while,
  • 5:13 - 5:16
    you become numb to it. It becomes normal for you,
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    and what you really fear the most
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    isn't the suffering inside of you.
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    It's the stigma inside of others,
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    it's the shame, it's the embarrassment,
  • 5:25 - 5:28
    it's the disapproving look on a friend's face,
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    it's the whispers in the hallway that you're weak,
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    it's the comments that you're crazy.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    That's what keeps you from getting help.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    That's what makes you hold it in and hide it.
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    It's the stigma. So you hold it in and you hide it,
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    and you hold it in and you hide it,
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    and even though it's keeping you in bed every day
  • 5:43 - 5:46
    and it's making your life feel empty no matter how much you try and fill it,
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    you hide it, because the stigma in our society
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    around depression is very real.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
    It's very real, and if you think that it isn't, ask yourself this:
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    Would you rather make your next Facebook status
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    say you're having a tough time getting out of bed
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    because you hurt your back
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    or you're having a tough time getting out of bed every morning
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    because you're depressed?
  • 6:04 - 6:07
    That's the stigma, because unfortunately,
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    we live in a world where if you break your arm,
  • 6:09 - 6:12
    everyone runs over to sign your cast,
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    but if you tell people you're depressed, everyone runs the other way.
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    That's the stigma.
  • 6:17 - 6:22
    We are so, so, so accepting of any body part breaking down
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    other than our brains. And that's ignorance.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    That's pure ignorance, and that ignorance has created
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    a world that doesn't understand depression,
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    that doesn't understand mental health.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    And that's ironic to me, because depression
  • 6:33 - 6:36
    is one of the best documented problems we have in the world,
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    yet it's one of the least discussed.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    We just push it aside and put it in a corner
  • 6:40 - 6:44
    and pretend it's not there and hope it'll fix itself.
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    Well, it won't. It hasn't, and it's not going to,
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    because that's wishful thinking,
  • 6:49 - 6:52
    and wishful thinking isn't a game plan, it's procrastination,
  • 6:52 - 6:57
    and we can't procrastinate on something this important.
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    The first step in solving any problem
  • 7:00 - 7:02
    is recognizing there is one.
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    Well, we haven't done that, so we can't really expect
  • 7:04 - 7:08
    to find an answer when we're still afraid of the question.
  • 7:08 - 7:11
    And I don't know what the solution is.
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    I wish I did, but I don't -- but I think,
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    I think it has to start here.
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    It has to start with me, it has to start with you,
  • 7:18 - 7:22
    it has to start with the people who are suffering,
  • 7:22 - 7:23
    the ones who are hidden in the shadows.
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    We need to speak up and shatter the silence.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    We need to be the ones who are brave for what we believe in,
  • 7:27 - 7:31
    because if there's one thing that I've come to realize,
  • 7:31 - 7:34
    if there's one thing that I see as the biggest problem,
  • 7:34 - 7:37
    it's not in building a world
  • 7:37 - 7:41
    where we eliminate the ignorance of others.
  • 7:41 - 7:44
    It's in building a world where we teach the acceptance of ourselves,
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    where we're okay with who we are,
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    because when we get honest,
  • 7:47 - 7:50
    we see that we all struggle and we all suffer.
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    Whether it's with this, whether it's with something else,
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    we all know what it is to hurt.
  • 7:55 - 7:56
    We all know what it is to have pain in our heart,
  • 7:56 - 7:59
    and we all know how important it is to heal.
  • 7:59 - 8:02
    But right now, depression is society's deep cut
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    that we're content to put a Band-Aid over and pretend it's not there.
  • 8:05 - 8:10
    Well, it is there. It is there, and you know what? It's okay.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
    Depression is okay. If you're going through it, know that you're okay.
  • 8:13 - 8:16
    And know that you're sick, you're not weak,
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    and it's an issue, not an identity,
  • 8:18 - 8:21
    because when you get past the fear and the ridicule
  • 8:21 - 8:22
    and the judgment and the stigma of others,
  • 8:22 - 8:25
    you can see depression for what it really is,
  • 8:25 - 8:28
    and that's just a part of life,
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    just a part of life, and as much as I hate,
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    as much as I hate some of the places,
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    some of the parts of my life depression has dragged me down to,
  • 8:37 - 8:40
    in a lot of ways I'm grateful for it.
  • 8:40 - 8:41
    Because yeah, it's put me in the valleys,
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    but only to show me there's peaks,
  • 8:43 - 8:44
    and yeah it's dragged me through the dark
  • 8:44 - 8:47
    but only to remind me there is light.
  • 8:47 - 8:51
    My pain, more than anything in 19 years on this planet,
  • 8:51 - 8:53
    has given me perspective, and my hurt,
  • 8:53 - 8:55
    my hurt has forced me to have hope,
  • 8:55 - 8:58
    have hope and to have faith, faith in myself,
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    faith in others, faith that it can get better,
  • 9:01 - 9:03
    that we can change this, that we can speak up
  • 9:03 - 9:05
    and speak out and fight back against ignorance,
  • 9:05 - 9:08
    fight back against intolerance,
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    and more than anything,
  • 9:10 - 9:13
    learn to love ourselves,
  • 9:13 - 9:15
    learn to accept ourselves for who we are,
  • 9:15 - 9:19
    the people we are, not the people the world wants us to be.
  • 9:19 - 9:21
    Because the world I believe in is one
  • 9:21 - 9:25
    where embracing your light doesn't mean ignoring your dark.
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    The world I believe in is one where we're measured
  • 9:27 - 9:31
    by our ability to overcome adversities, not avoid them.
  • 9:31 - 9:36
    The world I believe in is one where I can look someone in the eye
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    and say, "I'm going through hell,"
  • 9:37 - 9:41
    and they can look back at me and go, "Me too," and that's okay,
  • 9:41 - 9:45
    and it's okay because depression is okay. We're people.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    We're people, and we struggle and we suffer
  • 9:47 - 9:50
    and we bleed and we cry, and if you think that true strength
  • 9:50 - 9:52
    means never showing any weakness, then I'm here
  • 9:52 - 9:55
    to tell you you're wrong.
  • 9:55 - 9:59
    You're wrong, because it's the opposite.
  • 9:59 - 10:02
    We're people, and we have problems.
  • 10:02 - 10:03
    We're not perfect, and that's okay.
  • 10:03 - 10:06
    So we need to stop the ignorance,
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    stop the intolerance, stop the stigma,
  • 10:09 - 10:13
    and stop the silence, and we need to take away the taboos,
  • 10:13 - 10:18
    take a look at the truth, and start talking,
  • 10:18 - 10:23
    because the only way we're going to beat a problem
  • 10:23 - 10:26
    that people are battling alone
  • 10:26 - 10:30
    is by standing strong together,
  • 10:30 - 10:33
    by standing strong together.
  • 10:33 - 10:36
    And I believe that we can.
