How to TEDx: Discover the TEDTalk in your speaker

  • 0:00 - 0:04
[How to discover the TEDx talk
    inside your speaker]
  • 0:06 - 0:08
I'm "Z" Holly, curator of TEDxUSC.
  • 0:08 - 0:12
    Hey, I have my theme,
    I have my speakers,
  • 0:12 - 0:15
how do I find the best talk
from within each of the speakers?
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    Well let's find out.
  • 0:16 - 0:21
    Everybody's got a story inside,
and the key is to find that story.
  • 0:21 - 0:26
They come to you with interesting ideas
and to them It's the ideas that they have,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    you know, they carry them
and they think "here you go".
  • 0:28 - 0:33
But, I think the main thing here is
    to find other interesting things
  • 0:33 - 0:35
that they are not aware of
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    and make them very comfortable
    to become storytellers.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    Why and how come...
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    Coach
  • 0:43 - 0:47
The key to coaching, I think,
is to get that story out.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
Best ever talk you have delivered before,
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    that's also different
than the TEDx or the TED talk.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
So please come and let's have
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    a short video TED talk
    watching session together
  • 1:02 - 1:05
and then we start from there.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    Focus.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
...That the old story from Buddhism.
  • 1:09 - 1:16
    So there's a story where
    there is an elephant
  • 1:16 - 1:21
and then blind people touch it
    and everyone tells different stories.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
The talk is like a journey
from the river to another one
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    and there are ten stones
    between the two rivers
  • 1:28 - 1:31
and you have to find those stones.
  • 1:31 - 1:36
    And those stones could be
like a tweet or a phrase or a title.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    And while the talk moves,
I try to get this attention
  • 1:40 - 1:43
and focus more and more on this talk.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    And how they do this
    "Ah! See how he says,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    see how he got
    response from the audience?"
  • 1:49 - 1:54
So I put him in a mindset
    to accept the curation.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    Reveal!
  • 1:56 - 2:00
Leave two things. First, a message,
    a clear message.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    And secondly, use emotions.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    The interesting part is
    to connect with the people,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
to make them feel you care,
    to make them feel
  • 2:09 - 2:14
    that it's actually taking them
    to a higher level.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    These people, this whole process
    is about making them
  • 2:17 - 2:20
the best of what they can.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    I'm looking for, you know,
    ideas that are worth sharing,
  • 2:23 - 2:29
worth spreading, and then a speaker
    who has the will
  • 2:29 - 2:32
to share this idea in our timeframe.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    Everything that a speaker
    brings to the stage
  • 2:34 - 2:37
should be kind of a bonus
    for the audience
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    a bonus for their talk.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    Without these great speakers,
    you don't have the event.
