Does music have a color?: Steffin Johnson at TEDxDayton
-
0:13 - 0:15Hello everyone.
-
0:15 - 0:18As you may or may not have heard,
my name is Steffin Johnson -
0:18 - 0:20and I play piano.
-
0:20 - 0:22Now, an interesting thing happens
-
0:22 - 0:25when I say that to people sometimes.
-
0:25 - 0:27They immediately think: Art Tatum,
-
0:27 - 0:32or they think Oscar Peterson,
or maybe Herbie Hancock. -
0:32 - 0:34And that got me thinking:
-
0:34 - 0:36"Does music have a color?"
-
0:36 - 0:40Now I want to make sure
I get this out there: -
0:40 - 0:41I love the jazz greats!
-
0:41 - 0:45And Nat King Cole's performance
-
0:45 - 0:48of "Tea for Two" on YouTube
will change your life! -
0:48 - 0:50I'm probably responsible
for half the views -
0:50 - 0:52on that video myself. (Laughter)
-
0:52 - 0:56But I'm much more of a Mozart player,
which I owe to my mother. -
0:56 - 0:59She just got me introduced to
classical music at a young age. -
0:59 - 1:01So, I have a story for you guys.
-
1:01 - 1:04Currently, I study at
the Jacobs School of Music -
1:04 - 1:06in Indiana University.
-
1:06 - 1:07And on my very first day there,
-
1:07 - 1:10I heard someone playing
in the recital hall. -
1:10 - 1:13It was amazing!
I was like this was probably -
1:13 - 1:17this world famous professor
or performer or something. -
1:17 - 1:19So I was like
"I'm going to check it out." -
1:19 - 1:22I run over to the window
and I peek in, right? -
1:22 - 1:25Ah! It's a student!
-
1:25 - 1:27And the dude is a savage!
-
1:27 - 1:30He's all over the place!
He's got like 13 arms. -
1:30 - 1:33He's like an octopus!
He's just like -- -
1:33 - 1:36And my honest thought was
that's absolutely not cool at all! -
1:36 - 1:38Actually, I didn't want to hear that --
-
1:38 - 1:40to be my first person that I hear there.
-
1:40 - 1:41I'm in way over my head!
-
1:41 - 1:44So, now I'm going to fast forward
a couple days. -
1:44 - 1:46I'm in the practice building.
-
1:46 - 1:49What you've got to know about
the practice building is it's a circle. -
1:49 - 1:51and there's another circle inside.
-
1:51 - 1:53It's like a concrete doughnut.
-
1:53 - 1:57There's no windows,
no natural light gets in; -
1:57 - 1:59It's like a tomb of music. All right?
-
1:59 - 2:04So, I'm in there
and I'm practicing this piece -- -
2:05 - 2:09(Piano)
-
2:17 - 2:19And I'm getting kind of frustrated!
I'd been there for hours. -
2:19 - 2:22It's not working how I want it to work.
I need to take a break. -
2:22 - 2:25So, I open the door
and standing right there is the guy -
2:25 - 2:27that I saw playing on the first day.
-
2:27 - 2:29He's messing around on his phone.
-
2:29 - 2:30Now, he's never seen me before
-
2:30 - 2:33and he doesn't know
that I saw him playing earlier. -
2:33 - 2:37So, we meet eyes and we do
the guy thing -- ah, uh, oh, uh. -
2:38 - 2:42So we walk off and I'm coming back.
-
2:43 - 2:45Now, you don't actually need to know
this part of the story, -
2:45 - 2:47but it's a circle building,
there are no distinguishing marks. -
2:47 - 2:50I got lost! It took too long
to get back to the room. -
2:50 - 2:52I don't know what the problem was.
I finally get back -
2:52 - 2:54and he's still standing out there
messing around on his phone. -
2:54 - 2:58So, I'll go back in
and I start practicing again. -
2:58 - 3:01(Piano)
-
3:05 - 3:07Boom!
-
3:07 - 3:10The dude just busts in my door!
-
3:10 - 3:13And I'm like, "Hey, man,
I think there's some explanation -
3:13 - 3:15that's needed here,
you just gave me a mild coronary. -
3:15 - 3:17I need to understand
what's happening right now." -
3:17 - 3:20And he says, "I hope
you don't take offense to this, -
3:20 - 3:24but you are the first black person
I have ever heard -
3:24 - 3:25playing music like that."
-
3:25 - 3:28Now, I wasn't offended.
He just said how he felt. -
3:28 - 3:31And to be honest, we actually
became pretty good friends. -
3:31 - 3:34So. Now, I'm going to take you
back in time. -
3:35 - 3:391905.
-
3:39 - 3:43Maurice Ravel is
a French Impressionistic composer. -
3:43 - 3:46And actually that piece I was playing
is by Maurice Ravel. -
3:46 - 3:48And that kind of washes sound
as your traditional -
3:48 - 3:50impressionistic sound, right?
-
3:50 - 3:54So, in 1905 he writes a set of pieces
called "Miroirs". -
3:54 - 3:55There are five in the set.
-
3:55 - 3:57But the fourth one
is particularly interesting, -
3:57 - 4:00because it is a Spanish piece.
-
4:00 - 4:02This is a stark contrast
-
4:02 - 4:05to the calm watery-like sound
of Impressionism. -
4:05 - 4:09And it's much more of a clean kind of --
-
4:09 - 4:12He's evoking the Spanish idioms
-
4:12 - 4:14of the Flamenco guitar and all this stuff.
-
4:14 - 4:17So, without further ado,
-
4:17 - 4:19I, Steffin Johnson,
hopefully changing your perceptions -
4:19 - 4:22of what the classical musician
can look like, -
4:22 - 4:23will play a piece from a composer
-
4:23 - 4:25who changed perceptions with his music:
-
4:25 - 4:30Maurice Ravel's Alborada del Gracioso.
-
4:41 - 4:45(Piano)
-
11:16 - 11:20(Cheers) (Aplause)
