TEDxDubai - Loy Machedo - Stone of judgement

  • 0:15 - 0:16
    How many kids are there
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    in this room?
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    Could I see your hands?
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    I would dedicate this presentation
  • 0:26 - 0:28
to every child in this room,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    including the child in you,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
and the children around the world.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
So I want you to pay attention
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    to this person standing here
  • 0:40 - 0:44
What does it mean to be different?
  • 0:44 - 0:46
To find the answer to this really profound question,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
I decided to ask the guru
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    of all gurus,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    Google.com
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    I googled the question
  • 0:55 - 0:57
and voila! I got the answer.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    However, there was a problem
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    because I got somewhere around
  • 1:00 - 1:06
    410,786,434 pages only.
  • 1:06 - 1:07
So, since we have less time
  • 1:07 - 1:11
I will compress it into one single sentence
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    like my figure.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
And this is what I got.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    When you have CBL:
  • 1:20 - 1:23
two or more cultures, beliefs, lifestyles,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    or when you have VOP:
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    views, opinions, perceptions,
  • 1:28 - 1:31
that is when you have difference.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
Now, if you look at me
  • 1:32 - 1:36
I have a few tatoos on my body,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
just one extended, one really large.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
Now, you might think I'm different from you,
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    but I'm just like you.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    I eat, I sleep, I laugh, I cry.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
How many of you do that?
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    Mashallah, we are the same.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
I also have this hobby of reading books,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
writing articles and being on Facebook.
  • 1:56 - 1:57
How many of you do that?
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    Mashallah, we are the same.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
And guess what, I have a few dreams.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
I would like to have long hair,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
although it doesn't seem to be working.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
I'd like to touch the lives of many people.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
And when I die, I want to die fast.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
How many of you would like that?
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    Okay, a few less hands.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
But when people look at me,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
this is the expression they give.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    (Laughter)
  • 2:25 - 2:27
It's like, I'm walking to the grocery
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    and totally --
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    I mean, I'm like,
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    "Whoa, relax, chill dude."
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    And people have baptized me
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    with those wonderful names.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
Let me give you a few:
  • 2:42 - 2:46
smoker, drinker, even a drug adict,
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    guy who drives a Harley,
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    gangster, a wrestler,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
undertaker's brother and a heavy metal freak.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    Yeah.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
And the latest one to top the chart,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    I've got this one:
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    (Roars)
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    You should see people
  • 3:03 - 3:06
when they come into the lift and see me.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    Oh, my!
  • 3:08 - 3:12
    Now, to your bad news,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    I don't smoke, I don't drink,
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    I don't drive a Harley,
  • 3:15 - 3:18
instead I love playing with kids.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
I love children and children love to play with me.
  • 3:21 - 3:22
But you should see the parents
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    when they see me
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    with their kids.
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    They go like,
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    "Uh, let's take him."
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    Hey, what's the difference?
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    What is the difference?
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    I'm a speaker, writer,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
I'm a person who loves to read books.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    I'm just like you.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    Forget me.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
How many other people do we judge,
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    even before we know them?
  • 3:49 - 3:52
Have you ever thought about it?
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    The funny thing is
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    because all this experiences
  • 3:56 - 3:58
I've come up with this new theory
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    that it hurts.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
It hurts when you judge other people.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
It hurts when you deprive someone
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    of their dreams,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    of their goals,
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    of even a promotion,
  • 4:12 - 4:16
because you categorize them into different boxes.
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    And it hurts
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    when you teach your children
  • 4:19 - 4:23
    something that is not true.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
Because of the experiences in my life
  • 4:25 - 4:28
I came up with this new theory
  • 4:28 - 4:30
and by the way, it's copyright.
  • 4:30 - 4:34
I call it The Loy's Theory of Eggs.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    As for this profound theory,
  • 4:36 - 4:38
we human beings are like eggs.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    Different shapes, sizes and colors.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
Some of them are really very big,
  • 4:42 - 4:44
some medium, some really very small.
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    But my theory states:
  • 4:46 - 4:48
All of us eggs are equal.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    Give a round of applause.
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    (Applause)
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    Thank you.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
No, my presentation is not over.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
One of them just got up, relax.
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    So as I was saying,
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    we all eggs are equal.
  • 5:04 - 5:08
If you want proof, do this.
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    Break an egg.
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    What do you get?
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    The same stuff inside.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
But you get some people here
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    who categorize human beings
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    like they categorize eggs,
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    region or country.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
You get them dividing people like
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    good quality, bad quality.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    By one, get two free.
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    What's wrong with people?
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    But try doing this.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
Give this small child a dozen eggs,
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    different colors.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
For that child an egg is just an egg.
  • 5:42 - 5:44
And nothing was made more evident to me
  • 5:44 - 5:47
than the time when I was at the airport
  • 5:47 - 5:50
    waiting for my flight, daydreaming,
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    thinking of those romantic thoughts.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
    And then it happened.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    Someting started scratcing my hand.
  • 5:58 - 6:01
I looked down and I saw this.
  • 6:01 - 6:04
A small baby girl apparently thought
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    I was a walking-coloring book
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    (Laughter)
  • 6:08 - 6:13
    (Applause)
  • 6:14 - 6:19
and she actually started coloring me up.
  • 6:19 - 6:22
Now, I decided to show her the angry look.
  • 6:22 - 6:26
    And I showed her --
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    She gave me her look.
  • 6:30 - 6:32
And then I was like, I have to tell her.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    "Oh, it's okay, relax.
  • 6:34 - 6:37
    How about coloring this?"
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    And she was very happy.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
She started going higher and higher.
  • 6:41 - 6:42
    And before I knew it
  • 6:42 - 6:43
two of her friends came running by
  • 6:43 - 6:46
and all three started coloring me up.
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    Now picture this,
  • 6:48 - 6:51
a big tatooed guy and three babies
  • 6:51 - 6:54
    coloring him up.
  • 6:54 - 6:55
In fact, a lot of people got
  • 6:55 - 6:58
a lot of photographs of it for free.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
    But they didn't judge me.
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    The thing about children is
  • 7:06 - 7:08
    for them, everything is like
  • 7:08 - 7:11
a sense of curiosity and wonder.
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    They never, ever judge anyone.
  • 7:14 - 7:16
Have you ever tried giving a child a book?
  • 7:16 - 7:18
The child will open the pages,
  • 7:18 - 7:19
    try to read the book.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    If not possible, eat it.
  • 7:22 - 7:27
But a child never judges a book by its cover.
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    I really wonder:
  • 7:28 - 7:32
Why do we grown-ups lose that sense of mischief?
  • 7:32 - 7:33
In fact during the break --
  • 7:33 - 7:36
Is Ali in the house? Ali, where are you?
  • 7:36 - 7:39
    Is Ali somewhere here?
  • 7:41 - 7:44
Okay, there are a couple of Alis.
  • 7:44 - 7:47
Ali asked me this beautiful question.
  • 7:47 - 7:49
And I admire his courage for it.
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    He said, "Hey dude,
  • 7:50 - 7:52
when you start looking like this,
  • 7:52 - 7:56
how would you not expect someone to judge you?"
  • 7:56 - 7:58
I mean how much of media does it take
  • 7:58 - 7:59
    for us to change opinions
  • 7:59 - 8:02
or form opinions about other people?
  • 8:02 - 8:03
    Try doing this.
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    Take a group of children,
  • 8:05 - 8:06
    put them here.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    From different cultures, communities, religions.
  • 8:08 - 8:09
    Put them here.
  • 8:09 - 8:13
And do the same with adults.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    You'd see a difference here,
  • 8:15 - 8:16
and you'd see a difference here.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    The reason is
  • 8:18 - 8:24
because someone out there is giving you information
  • 8:24 - 8:25
    which is not true.
  • 8:25 - 8:27
And for us, we are comfortable
  • 8:27 - 8:30
to hide within our comfort zone
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    and judge others.
  • 8:32 - 8:35
I believe that every human being here
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    is equal.
  • 8:37 - 8:38
    I believe that
  • 8:38 - 8:41
when you categorize people through their CBL,
  • 8:41 - 8:45
    cultures, beliefs, lifestyles,
  • 8:45 - 8:48
    or even VOPs,
  • 8:48 - 8:51
    views, opinions or perceptions
  • 8:51 - 8:54
    you are comitting a sin.
  • 8:54 - 8:57
Including when you judge someone with tatoos.
  • 8:57 - 9:01
My dear friends, this is just color.
  • 9:01 - 9:05
When I die, I'm going six feet underground
  • 9:05 - 9:09
and most of you are gonna join me.
  • 9:09 - 9:11
    So why the differentiation
  • 9:11 - 9:15
    between me or anyone else.
  • 9:15 - 9:19
So that is where I would conclude.
  • 9:19 - 9:24
As I conclude, this is the message I give to all of you:
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    We are all born different,
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    to different fathers and mothers
  • 9:28 - 9:29
but we are all the same.
  • 9:29 - 9:32
We are all sisters, we are brothers.
  • 9:32 - 9:34
We all have a pair of limbs,
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    We all look the same.
  • 9:37 - 9:41
Be from far East, the West, North or South.
  • 9:41 - 9:43
When we are all the same,
  • 9:43 - 9:46
why do we hate, fight and cry.
  • 9:46 - 9:48
Instead, let's pray for one another
  • 9:48 - 9:51
under this vast beautiful blue sky.
  • 9:51 - 9:55
Every waking day, bless each and everyone,
  • 9:55 - 9:59
by the cool summer breeze or the warmth of the sun.
  • 9:59 - 10:02
    Look at each and everyone
  • 10:02 - 10:04
through the eyes of a child.
  • 10:04 - 10:06
    Hold each other close
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    through prayers, powerful, yet mild.
  • 10:09 - 10:13
Take those baby steps like walking.
  • 10:13 - 10:15
And do this one small thing.
  • 10:15 - 10:17
No more wars will be fought.
  • 10:17 - 10:19
Songs of victory we will sing.
  • 10:19 - 10:22
    Let's become like little children,
  • 10:22 - 10:25
this is the message that I bring.
  • 10:25 - 10:28
For this child here, you all,
  • 10:28 - 10:31
    every person here,
  • 10:31 - 10:33
    every child in the world
  • 10:33 - 10:34
    is truly
  • 10:34 - 10:37
    the beauty of small things.
  • 10:37 - 10:41
    (Applause)
