Nature. Beauty. Gratitude.

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    When I graduated UCLA,
    I moved to Northern California,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
and I lived in a little town called Elk,
    on the Mendocino coast.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
And I didn't have a phone or TV,
    but I had US mail.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
And life was good back then --
    if you could remember it.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
I'd go to the general store
for a cup of coffee and a brownie,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
I'd ship my film to San Francisco,
  • 0:24 - 0:27
and lo and behold, two days later,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
it would end up on my front door,
  • 0:29 - 0:33
which was way better than having
to fight the traffic of Hollywood.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    I didn't have much money,
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    (Music)
  • 0:38 - 0:41
but I had time and a sense of wonder.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    So I started shooting
    time-lapse photography.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
It would take me a month to shoot
    a four-minute roll of film,
  • 0:48 - 0:50
because that's all I could afford.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    I've been shooting time-lapse
    flowers continuously, nonstop,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
24 hours a day, seven days a week,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    for over 30 years.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    And to see them move
is a dance I'll never get tired of.
  • 1:03 - 1:08
    Their beauty immerses us
    with color, taste, touch.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    It also provides a third
    of the food we eat.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    (Music)
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    Beauty and seduction
    are nature's tools for survival,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    because we protect
what we fall in love with.
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    It opens our hearts
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    and makes us realize
we are a part of nature,
  • 1:25 - 1:27
and we're not separate from it.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
When we see ourselves in nature,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
it also connects us to every one of us,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    because it's clear
that it's all connected in one.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    When people see my images,
a lot of times they'll say,
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    "Oh my God."
  • 1:43 - 1:45
Have you ever wondered what that meant?
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    The "oh" means it caught your attention;
  • 1:48 - 1:50
it makes you present, makes you mindful.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    The "my" means it connects
with something deep inside your soul.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
It creates a gateway for your inner voice
to rise up and be heard.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    And "God"?
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    God is that personal journey
we all want to be on,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    to be inspired,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    to feel like we're connected
to a universe that celebrates life.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
Did you know that 80 percent
    of the information we receive
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    comes through our eyes,
  • 2:19 - 2:23
and if you compare light energy
    to musical scales,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
it would only be one octave
that the naked eye could see,
  • 2:26 - 2:27
which is right in the middle?
  • 2:28 - 2:30
And aren't we grateful for our brains,
  • 2:30 - 2:34
that can take this electrical impulse
    that comes from light energy
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    to create images in order
for us to explore our world?
  • 2:39 - 2:43
And aren't we grateful that we have hearts
    that can feel these vibrations
  • 2:43 - 2:46
in order for us to allow ourselves
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    to feel the pleasure
    and the beauty of nature?
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    Nature's beauty is a gift
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    that cultivates
    appreciation and gratitude.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    So, I have a gift I want
    to share with you today,
  • 3:05 - 3:09
    a project I'm working on
    called "Happiness Revealed."
  • 3:09 - 3:12
And it'll give us a glimpse
    into that perspective --
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    from the point of view
of a child and an elderly man --
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    of that world.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
Little girl: When I watch TV,
  • 3:25 - 3:30
    it's just some shows
that you just -- that are pretend.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    And when you explore,
  • 3:33 - 3:38
    you get more imagination
    than you already had,
  • 3:38 - 3:41
and when you get more imagination,
  • 3:41 - 3:44
it makes you want to go deeper in
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    so you can get more
    and see beautifuller things,
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    like the path,
  • 3:49 - 3:54
if it's a path, it could lead you
    to a beach or something,
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    and it could be beautiful.
  • 3:59 - 4:04
    (Music)
  • 4:25 - 4:29
    (Narrator) Brother David Steindl-Rast:
Do you think this is just another day
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    in your life?
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    It's not just another day.
  • 4:34 - 4:38
It's the one day that is given to you:
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    today.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    (Music)
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    It's given to you.
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    It's a gift.
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    It's the only gift
    that you have right now.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    And the only appropriate response
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    is gratefulness.
  • 4:58 - 5:03
    (Music)
  • 5:06 - 5:12
    If you do nothing else
    but to cultivate that response
  • 5:12 - 5:16
to the great gift that this unique day is,
  • 5:17 - 5:24
    if you learn to respond
as if it were the first day in your life
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    and the very last day,
  • 5:27 - 5:32
    then you will have spent
    this day very well.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    (Music)
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    Begin by opening your eyes
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    and be surprised
that you have eyes you can open,
  • 5:42 - 5:47
    that incredible array of colors
that is constantly offered to us
  • 5:47 - 5:50
    for our pure enjoyment.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    Look at the sky.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
We so rarely look at the sky.
  • 5:59 - 6:05
We so rarely note how different it is
    from moment to moment,
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    with clouds coming and going.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
We just think of the weather,
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    and even with the weather,
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    we don't think of all
    the many nuances of weather.
  • 6:16 - 6:20
We just think of "good weather"
    and "bad weather."
  • 6:21 - 6:24
This day, right now, has unique weather,
  • 6:25 - 6:31
maybe a kind that will never exactly,
    in that form, come again.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
    The formation of clouds
in the sky will never be the same
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    as it is right now.
  • 6:38 - 6:41
Open your eyes. Look at that.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    (Music)
  • 6:44 - 6:47
Look at the faces of people whom you meet.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
Each one has an incredible story
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    behind their face,
  • 6:56 - 7:01
a story that you could never fully fathom,
  • 7:02 - 7:07
    not only their own story,
but the story of their ancestors.
  • 7:09 - 7:11
We all go back so far,
  • 7:13 - 7:17
and in this present moment, on this day,
  • 7:17 - 7:22
    all the people you meet,
    all that life from generations
  • 7:22 - 7:25
and from so many places all over the world
  • 7:26 - 7:29
flows together and meets you here,
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    like a life-giving water,
  • 7:32 - 7:35
if you only open your heart and drink.
  • 7:36 - 7:43
    (Music)
  • 7:43 - 7:47
Open your heart to the incredible gifts
  • 7:47 - 7:50
    that civilization gives to us.
  • 7:50 - 7:54
    You flip a switch,
    and there is electric light.
  • 7:54 - 8:00
You turn a faucet, and there
is warm water and cold water,
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    and drinkable water.
  • 8:02 - 8:07
    It's a gift that millions
    and millions in the world
  • 8:07 - 8:09
    will never experience.
  • 8:10 - 8:15
So these are just a few
of an enormous number of gifts
  • 8:15 - 8:17
to which we can open your heart.
  • 8:19 - 8:22
    And so I wish you
that you will open your heart
  • 8:22 - 8:25
    to all these blessings,
  • 8:25 - 8:27
and let them flow through you,
  • 8:28 - 8:32
    that everyone whom you
    will meet on this day
  • 8:32 - 8:34
    will be blessed by you,
  • 8:36 - 8:37
    just by your eyes,
  • 8:39 - 8:41
    by your smile,
  • 8:43 - 8:44
    by your touch,
  • 8:46 - 8:48
    just by your presence.
  • 8:51 - 8:54
    Let the gratefulness overflow
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    into blessing all around you.
  • 8:57 - 8:59
    (Music)
  • 9:00 - 9:04
And then, it will really be
  • 9:04 - 9:06
    a good day.
  • 9:16 - 9:17
    (Applause)
  • 9:17 - 9:18
    Louie Schwartzberg: Thank you.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    (Applause)
  • 9:20 - 9:21
    Thank you very much.
  • 9:21 - 9:27
    (Applause)
