Mysteries of vernacular: Yankee - Jessica Oreck and Rachael Teel

  • 0:07 - 0:10
    Mysteries of vernacular:
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    Yankee,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    a New England resident
  • 0:13 - 0:15
or, more generally, a person who lives in
  • 0:15 - 0:18
or is from the United States.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
Though the origin of Yankee is uncertain,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
this all-American word most likely descended
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    from the Dutch moniker Janke,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    a diminutive meaning little Jan,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    or little John.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    In the 17th century,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
Janke was the common nickname of Dutch sailors,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    pirates in particular.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
A Dutch pirate ship operating in the West Indies
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    was even called the Yankee.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    Over the years, Yankee transformed
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    from a pirate's nickname
  • 0:49 - 0:52
into a general term of contempt.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
In 1758, British general James Wolfe
  • 0:56 - 0:59
used Yankee as a pejorative term
  • 0:59 - 1:01
for the colonists under his supervision.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
But the insult wasn't limited to soldiers.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
Yankee quickly came to mean New Englander,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    and by the 1780s,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
it was used to look down
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    upon any American.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    During the Revolution,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    colonists co-opted Yankee
  • 1:18 - 1:22
and transformed it into a mark of national honor.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    The Civil War, however,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    intensified the derisive definition
  • 1:27 - 1:28
when it was used by Southerners
  • 1:28 - 1:31
to mock members of the Union.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
Today, it carries much less emotion,
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    unless, of course,
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    we're talking about baseball.

Is it a doodle dandy? A baseball team? The origins of the word yankee are unclear, though its usage in America as a pejorative is well-documented. Jessica Oreck and Rachael Teel track the varying levels of contempt that the word yankee has elicited from the pre-Revolution era to today.
