-
0:10 - 0:11Yankee,
-
0:11 - 0:13a New England resident
-
0:13 - 0:15or, more generally, a person who lives in
-
0:15 - 0:18or is from the United States.
-
0:18 - 0:21Though the origin of Yankee is uncertain,
-
0:21 - 0:24this all-American word most likely descended
-
0:24 - 0:27from the Dutch moniker Janke,
-
0:27 - 0:30a diminutive meaning little Jan,
-
0:30 - 0:32or little John.
-
0:32 - 0:34In the 17th century,
-
0:34 - 0:37Janke was the common nickname of Dutch sailors,
-
0:37 - 0:39pirates in particular.
-
0:39 - 0:42A Dutch pirate ship operating in the West Indies
-
0:42 - 0:45was even called the Yankee.
-
0:45 - 0:47Over the years, Yankee transformed
-
0:47 - 0:49from a pirate's nickname
-
0:49 - 0:52into a general term of contempt.
-
0:52 - 0:56In 1758, British general James Wolfe
-
0:56 - 0:59used Yankee as a pejorative term
-
0:59 - 1:01for the colonists under his supervision.
-
1:01 - 1:05But the insult wasn't limited to soldiers.
-
1:05 - 1:08Yankee quickly came to mean New Englander,
-
1:08 - 1:10and by the 1780s,
-
1:10 - 1:12it was used to look down
-
1:12 - 1:14upon any American.
-
1:14 - 1:16During the Revolution,
-
1:16 - 1:18colonists co-opted Yankee
-
1:18 - 1:22and transformed it into a mark of national honor.
-
1:22 - 1:24The Civil War, however,
-
1:24 - 1:27intensified the derisive definition
-
1:27 - 1:28when it was used by Southerners
-
1:28 - 1:31to mock members of the Union.
-
1:31 - 1:34Today, it carries much less emotion,
-
1:34 - 1:35unless, of course,
-
1:35 - 1:38we're talking about baseball.
