Should I Give Up the Scale? How Do I Give a Diagnosis?Tumblr Tuesday!! Q&A! with Kati Morton
-
0:01 - 0:04Hey everyone! Happy Tuesday!
-
0:04 - 0:07Now today, is Tumblr Tuesday!
-
0:07 - 0:09I feel like I should tumble when I say that.
-
0:09 - 0:11Like I'm in a gymnastics class or something.
-
Not SyncedOkay, so, before I get into Tumblr land
-
Not SyncedI wanted to let you all know - drumroll -
-
Not Syncedthat the website is up! The new website! Yay!
-
Not SyncedAnd I know that
-
Not Syncedmany of you have been asking for this,
-
Not Syncedand hoping for this. Thank you so much
-
Not Syncedfor being patient. The last website -
-
Not Syncedit's funny because I remember searching through
-
Not Syncedall the website types, and thinking, that will be perfect!
-
Not SyncedBecause we can share love, and give people
-
Not Syncedlittle extra hearts on their blog posts,
-
Not Syncedbut then it just got really difficult because
-
Not Syncedhow do we ask simple questions?
-
Not SyncedAnd what if one of us just has a little question?
-
Not SyncedAnd then, how quickly can we get back to one another?
-
Not SyncedAnd then [mumbles] , right?
-
Not SyncedAnd it was a lot for me to read through
-
Not Syncedand make sure there was nothing triggering,
-
Not Syncedand to approve all those blog posts,
-
Not Syncedand set pictures to them, and yada yada yada, right?
-
Not SyncedSo the new website is up, and there are forums.
-
Not SyncedAnd it's actually
-
Not Synced- I'm looking at my computer over here -
-
Not Syncedit's actually a social network site now,
-
Not Syncedwhere you can friend people, and follow people,
-
Not Syncedand you can update your profile and answer
-
Not Syncedthese funny questions I've put in, like
-
Not Syncedwhat are your favorite hobbies? And things like that.
-
Not SyncedFavorite colors? I don't even know what I put in there.
-
Not SyncedChocolate, vanilla, strawberry? What favorite flavor?
-
Not SyncedSo yeah, you kind of create your own profile!
-
Not SyncedAnd it will tell you like how much of that is done,
-
Not Syncedand it's really exciting! So,
-
Not Syncedif you haven't hopped on my website -
-
Not SyncedKatiMorton.com - you can check it out.
-
Not SyncedAnd I have opened up the forums.
-
Not SyncedI am not looking through all of it
-
Not Syncedand approving the forums, because
-
Not SyncedI want you to have the support 24/7.
-
Not SyncedAnd I am not awake 24/7, 'cause then I'd be like a zombie.
-
Not SyncedSo, I've opened it up. However, the same rules
-
Not Syncedstill apply. And I will check the forums very frequently
-
Not SyncedBut if you find any triggering information,
-
Not Syncedlet somebody know. Just say
-
Not Synced"Hey, we don't use numbers on here", or
-
Not Synced"Hey, you know we don't talk like that on this website"
-
Not Syncedblah, blah, blah, or if you want to leave it up to me,
-
Not Syncedyou can let me know. And I will be happy
-
Not Syncedto message them and let them know
-
Not Syncedthe rules of the website, because I want to keep it
-
Not Synceda safe and supportive environment like it's been
-
Not Syncedand no way will this ever become a pro-
-
Not Syncedunhealthy behavior website, okay?
-
Not SyncedSo even thought I've opened it up,
-
Not Syncedthe same rules apply. So don't, you know,
-
Not Synceddon't break the rules, okay? And, let me see
-
Not Syncedif there is anything else. So yeah,
-
Not SyncedI think that's really it. Give me your feedback,
-
Not Syncedlet me know if somethings not quite working,
-
Not Syncedor if you like the way that this is,
-
Not Syncedor, you know I'm always looking for feedback
-
Not Syncedbecause I'm just getting into this website
-
Not Syncedin the back end, and trying different things out.
-
Not SyncedSo, I'm always welcoming the feedback. Okay?
-
Not SyncedAnd, on to Tumblr-land.
-
Not SyncedOh, and I got my nails painted today, you see?
-
Not SyncedI was real excited - I was like - I love purple. Yay!
-
Not SyncedSo, okay - and before I forget actually -
-
Not Syncedon the website, you can still blog. I know many of you
-
Not Syncedhave been like, "Katie, where'd the blog option go?"
-
Not SyncedAnd in the forums, you'll find my explaination
-
Not Syncedfor how you can still blog.
-
Not SyncedSo if you still want to do that, there's a forum about it
-
Not Syncedso you can read. And if you have any
-
Not Syncedquestions about it, or sturuggles, you can
-
Not Syncedhit me up on Twitter, okay?
-
Not SyncedNow the questions, the first question is,
-
Not Synced"What's the difference between a setback,
-
Not Syncedand a relapse?".
-
Not SyncedNow, I'm assuming this would differ
-
Not Syncedfrom person to person, because it's really just
-
Not Synced
-
Not Synceda definition thing. But a setback would be like
-
Not Synced"Ugh, it was my birthday, and I had two parties to go
-
Not Syncedto. So I felt like I binged, and then I purged...
-
Not Syncedso I'm feeling really guilty".
-
Not SyncedBut then we get back up the next day,
-
Not Syncedand we get back on track.
-
Not SyncedThat would be like a setback or a slip-up, or
-
Not Syncedhow ever many kinds of words we could use
-
Not Syncedto describe that, right?
-
Not SyncedAnd then a relapse would be,
-
Not Syncedwhen we go back to the way it used to be.
-
Not SyncedLike, which we all have felt this -
-
Not Syncedif you look up the definition - I think it says something
-
Not Syncedlike back-sliding, or getting back -
-
Not Syncedthey talk about it medically, so when the symptoms
-
Not Syncedcome back full-force, and I think that applies for
-
Not Syncedeating disorders, self-harm, depression, anxiety,
-
Not Syncedif we go back to the way it was, before we got help.
-
Not SyncedSo, if we are binging and pruging X-amount of times a day again,
-
Not Syncedor we are exercising X-amount, or we're
-
Not Syncedsitting in bed all day, and not getting out.
-
Not SyncedOr, we're finding ourselves overly anxious in public,
-
Not Syncedso we're not meeting up with our friends... etc.
-
Not SyncedDoes that make sense? So it's kind of all going back.
-
Not SyncedAnd then, then the next part - so that was one
-
Not Syncedpersons question on Tumblr.
-
Not SyncedAnd the next question was
-
Not Synced"how do we get through a relapse?"
-
Not SyncedSo that was another one, but I decided to
-
Not Syncedmush it together. And, just like what I said
-
Not Synceda relapse is going back to the way it use to be.
-
Not SyncedWe have to go back to when we first started
-
Not Syncedto recover, and use those same tools.
-
Not SyncedBecause all the work we have done - [apologizes] -
-
Not Syncedall the work we have done, is a loss.
-
Not SyncedIt's not lost - it's still there - we just have to
-
Not Syncedget back on track, use our tools,
-
Not Syncedmaybe start on my workbook again
-
Not Syncedtask one - which I know you all hate - but,
-
Not Syncedget back on there, okay? And start doing that again
-
Not Syncedbecause the same things that helped us before
-
Not Syncedcan help us now. And I know it's annoying,
-
Not Syncedand we're like, "I've already done it". It's like
-
Not Syncedkindergarten or something, and we're like,
-
Not Synced"We've already learned this", but we have to
-
Not Syncedgo back, okay?
-
Not SyncedQuestion number two. This person
-
Not Synced- I'm not going to share anybody's name 'cause
-
Not Syncedon Tumblr it's usually anonymous,
-
Not Syncedor they really want to to keep their privacy,
-
Not Syncedbut this persons therapist was wanting them
-
Not Syncedto give up their scale, and to give it to a friend.
-
Not SyncedThey are feeling really anxious about it obviously,
-
Not Syncedbecause a lot of us folks on the numbers and weight,
-
Not Syncedand all this calorie in and out, and -
-
Not SyncedRight? Our eating disorder loves that stuff.
-
Not SyncedAnd, she's feeling really anxious,
-
Not Syncedso she wondered about my thoughts on that.
-
Not SyncedI think giving it to a friend is a great idea
-
Not Synceda lot of times I'll take it from my client for a week,
-
Not Syncedand give it back. Or give them the option
-
Not Syncedto take it back. So, I think that it's a great idea.
-
Not SyncedI know that it's really anxiety provoking and,
-
Not SyncedI would encourage you to journal about it a little bit
-
Not Syncedand see why you're feeling so anxious, and
-
Not Syncedwhat does it mean to not be weighed?
-
Not SyncedWhat are you afraid is going to happen?
-
Not SyncedI can pretty much guess what it is, but sometimes
-
Not Syncedit helps for us to write it out, and then to say,
-
Not Synced"Well, what if we can get it back any time?"
-
Not SyncedLike, what it you gave it to your therapist,
-
Not Syncedand they just said "let me know if you want it back,
-
Not Syncedand I'll put it in a bag in the waiting room,
-
Not Syncedand you can come get it.", then how would it feel?
-
Not SyncedAnd maybe you should, before giving it to a friend,
-
Not Syncedmaybe we should just try not weighing ourselves
-
Not Syncedfor one day, or one afternoon. It depends on
-
Not Syncedhow often you weight yourself, and we'll start
-
Not Syncedweaning off, you know?
-
Not SyncedSo, those are my thoughts on that. Your therapist
-
Not Syncedis doing a great job, 'cause that's something I
-
Not Syncedalways encourage, you know,
-
Not Syncedsome kind of version of that, okay?
-
Not SyncedNumber three, someone wanted to know the process
-
Not Syncedof getting a diagnosis. Now, this probably differs
-
Not Syncedfrom Therapist to Therapist, but I'll just tell you mine.
-
Not SyncedI'm going to see you the first time, and I'm going to
-
Not Syncedask you a lot of questions - about your history,
-
Not Syncedand where you've been before, and if there is
-
Not Syncedanother Therapist I should talk to, and,
-
Not SyncedI'd get you to sign a release if that's the case.
-
Not SyncedI'd ask you about medical conditions, and things
-
Not Syncedyou struggled with physically that you had to go to
-
Not Syncedthe hospital for. I'd ask about medications, and
-
Not Syncedthe list goes on, and on, and on.
-
Not SyncedAnd through the course of spending time with you
-
Not Syncedand having other sessions, I'll ask you about
-
Not Syncedyour behaviors, like how many times
-
Not Synceddo you feel depressed? Or how many times do you
-
Not Syncedbinge and purge? Or how many times do you
-
Not Syncedcut yourself in a day, or week, or month?
-
Not SyncedAnd I'll just start asking questions about that.
-
Not SyncedAnd, I probably see my clients four times - I'm just
-
Not Syncedgiving you a rough estimate - unless there's some
-
Not Syncedreason we have to make a diagnosis quicker,
-
Not SyncedI usually see them for about a month,
-
Not Syncedbefore I feel confident enough to give them
-
Not Synceda diagnosis. And then, I usually will jot in my notes
-
Not Syncedwhat I'm ruling out. Like, to rule out major depressive
-
Not Synceddisorder, or bulimia, or binging disorder
-
Not Synced- whatever it is I'm looking at -
-
Not Syncedborderline personality disorder. And then I'll start
-
Not Syncedweeding them out, so that it doesn't quite meet
-
Not Syncedcriteria for this, it's more apt to meet that.
-
Not SyncedAnd so that's how I do it. So think of it
-
Not Syncedas a funnel - I'm taking all of this information
-
Not Syncedand I'm getting it down to what I think is actually
-
Not Syncedthe struggle and the issue. But in the meantime,
-
Not SyncedI'm also creating a treatment plan based on
-
Not Syncedall those possibilities, so I like doing that
-
Not Syncedbecause it gives a more well rounded treatment plan,
-
Not Syncedso it's not just one thing that we're focusing on
-
Not Synced- even if it is one diagnosis, we have
-
Not Synceda lot of stuff going on, you know?
-
Not SyncedSo, that's just a little snippet about how that works.
-
Not SyncedOkay, on to number four.
-
Not Synced"What do you do, if someone threatens
-
Not Syncedto kill themselves, if you tell their parents?"
-
Not SyncedAnd I know that this comes from someone on Twitter,
