Should I Give Up the Scale? How Do I Give a Diagnosis?Tumblr Tuesday!! Q&A! with Kati Morton

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    Hey everyone! Happy Tuesday!
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    Now today, is Tumblr Tuesday!
  • 0:07 - 0:09
I feel like I should tumble when I say that.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
Like I'm in a gymnastics class or something.
  • Not Synced
Okay, so, before I get into Tumblr land
  • Not Synced
I wanted to let you all know - drumroll -
  • Not Synced
that the website is up! The new website! Yay!
  • Not Synced
    And I know that
  • Not Synced
many of you have been asking for this,
  • Not Synced
and hoping for this. Thank you so much
  • Not Synced
for being patient. The last website -
  • Not Synced
it's funny because I remember searching through
  • Not Synced
all the website types, and thinking, that will be perfect!
  • Not Synced
Because we can share love, and give people
  • Not Synced
little extra hearts on their blog posts,
  • Not Synced
but then it just got really difficult because
  • Not Synced
how do we ask simple questions?
  • Not Synced
And what if one of us just has a little question?
  • Not Synced
And then, how quickly can we get back to one another?
  • Not Synced
    And then [mumbles] , right?
  • Not Synced
And it was a lot for me to read through
  • Not Synced
and make sure there was nothing triggering,
  • Not Synced
and to approve all those blog posts,
  • Not Synced
and set pictures to them, and yada yada yada, right?
  • Not Synced
So the new website is up, and there are forums.
  • Not Synced
    And it's actually
  • Not Synced
    - I'm looking at my computer over here -
  • Not Synced
it's actually a social network site now,
  • Not Synced
where you can friend people, and follow people,
  • Not Synced
and you can update your profile and answer
  • Not Synced
these funny questions I've put in, like
  • Not Synced
what are your favorite hobbies? And things like that.
  • Not Synced
Favorite colors? I don't even know what I put in there.
  • Not Synced
Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry? What favorite flavor?
  • Not Synced
So yeah, you kind of create your own profile!
  • Not Synced
And it will tell you like how much of that is done,
  • Not Synced
    and it's really exciting! So,
  • Not Synced
if you haven't hopped on my website -
  • Not Synced
KatiMorton.com - you can check it out.
  • Not Synced
And I have opened up the forums.
  • Not Synced
I am not looking through all of it
  • Not Synced
    and approving the forums, because
  • Not Synced
I want you to have the support 24/7.
  • Not Synced
And I am not awake 24/7, 'cause then I'd be like a zombie.
  • Not Synced
So, I've opened it up. However, the same rules
  • Not Synced
still apply. And I will check the forums very frequently
  • Not Synced
But if you find any triggering information,
  • Not Synced
    let somebody know. Just say
  • Not Synced
"Hey, we don't use numbers on here", or
  • Not Synced
"Hey, you know we don't talk like that on this website"
  • Not Synced
blah, blah, blah, or if you want to leave it up to me,
  • Not Synced
you can let me know. And I will be happy
  • Not Synced
to message them and let them know
  • Not Synced
the rules of the website, because I want to keep it
  • Not Synced
a safe and supportive environment like it's been
  • Not Synced
and no way will this ever become a pro-
  • Not Synced
    unhealthy behavior website, okay?
  • Not Synced
So even thought I've opened it up,
  • Not Synced
the same rules apply. So don't, you know,
  • Not Synced
don't break the rules, okay? And, let me see
  • Not Synced
if there is anything else. So yeah,
  • Not Synced
I think that's really it. Give me your feedback,
  • Not Synced
let me know if somethings not quite working,
  • Not Synced
or if you like the way that this is,
  • Not Synced
or, you know I'm always looking for feedback
  • Not Synced
because I'm just getting into this website
  • Not Synced
in the back end, and trying different things out.
  • Not Synced
So, I'm always welcoming the feedback. Okay?
  • Not Synced
    And, on to Tumblr-land.
  • Not Synced
Oh, and I got my nails painted today, you see?
  • Not Synced
I was real excited - I was like - I love purple. Yay!
  • Not Synced
So, okay - and before I forget actually -
  • Not Synced
on the website, you can still blog. I know many of you
  • Not Synced
have been like, "Katie, where'd the blog option go?"
  • Not Synced
And in the forums, you'll find my explaination
  • Not Synced
for how you can still blog.
  • Not Synced
So if you still want to do that, there's a forum about it
  • Not Synced
so you can read. And if you have any
  • Not Synced
questions about it, or sturuggles, you can
  • Not Synced
hit me up on Twitter, okay?
  • Not Synced
Now the questions, the first question is,
  • Not Synced
"What's the difference between a setback,
  • Not Synced
    and a relapse?".
  • Not Synced
Now, I'm assuming this would differ
  • Not Synced
from person to person, because it's really just
  • Not Synced
  • Not Synced
a definition thing. But a setback would be like
  • Not Synced
"Ugh, it was my birthday, and I had two parties to go
  • Not Synced
to. So I felt like I binged, and then I purged...
  • Not Synced
    so I'm feeling really guilty".
  • Not Synced
But then we get back up the next day,
  • Not Synced
and we get back on track.
  • Not Synced
That would be like a setback or a slip-up, or
  • Not Synced
how ever many kinds of words we could use
  • Not Synced
    to describe that, right?
  • Not Synced
And then a relapse would be,
  • Not Synced
when we go back to the way it used to be.
  • Not Synced
Like, which we all have felt this -
  • Not Synced
if you look up the definition - I think it says something
  • Not Synced
like back-sliding, or getting back -
  • Not Synced
they talk about it medically, so when the symptoms
  • Not Synced
come back full-force, and I think that applies for
  • Not Synced
    eating disorders, self-harm, depression, anxiety,
  • Not Synced
if we go back to the way it was, before we got help.
  • Not Synced
So, if we are binging and pruging X-amount of times a day again,
  • Not Synced
or we are exercising X-amount, or we're
  • Not Synced
sitting in bed all day, and not getting out.
  • Not Synced
Or, we're finding ourselves overly anxious in public,
  • Not Synced
so we're not meeting up with our friends... etc.
  • Not Synced
Does that make sense? So it's kind of all going back.
  • Not Synced
And then, then the next part - so that was one
  • Not Synced
    persons question on Tumblr.
  • Not Synced
    And the next question was
  • Not Synced
"how do we get through a relapse?"
  • Not Synced
So that was another one, but I decided to
  • Not Synced
mush it together. And, just like what I said
  • Not Synced
a relapse is going back to the way it use to be.
  • Not Synced
We have to go back to when we first started
  • Not Synced
to recover, and use those same tools.
  • Not Synced
Because all the work we have done - [apologizes] -
  • Not Synced
all the work we have done, is a loss.
  • Not Synced
It's not lost - it's still there - we just have to
  • Not Synced
get back on track, use our tools,
  • Not Synced
maybe start on my workbook again
  • Not Synced
task one - which I know you all hate - but,
  • Not Synced
get back on there, okay? And start doing that again
  • Not Synced
because the same things that helped us before
  • Not Synced
can help us now. And I know it's annoying,
  • Not Synced
and we're like, "I've already done it". It's like
  • Not Synced
kindergarten or something, and we're like,
  • Not Synced
"We've already learned this", but we have to
  • Not Synced
    go back, okay?
  • Not Synced
    Question number two. This person
  • Not Synced
    - I'm not going to share anybody's name 'cause
  • Not Synced
    on Tumblr it's usually anonymous,
  • Not Synced
or they really want to to keep their privacy,
  • Not Synced
but this persons therapist was wanting them
  • Not Synced
to give up their scale, and to give it to a friend.
  • Not Synced
They are feeling really anxious about it obviously,
  • Not Synced
because a lot of us folks on the numbers and weight,
  • Not Synced
and all this calorie in and out, and -
  • Not Synced
Right? Our eating disorder loves that stuff.
  • Not Synced
    And, she's feeling really anxious,
  • Not Synced
so she wondered about my thoughts on that.
  • Not Synced
I think giving it to a friend is a great idea
  • Not Synced
a lot of times I'll take it from my client for a week,
  • Not Synced
and give it back. Or give them the option
  • Not Synced
to take it back. So, I think that it's a great idea.
  • Not Synced
I know that it's really anxiety provoking and,
  • Not Synced
I would encourage you to journal about it a little bit
  • Not Synced
and see why you're feeling so anxious, and
  • Not Synced
what does it mean to not be weighed?
  • Not Synced
What are you afraid is going to happen?
  • Not Synced
I can pretty much guess what it is, but sometimes
  • Not Synced
it helps for us to write it out, and then to say,
  • Not Synced
"Well, what if we can get it back any time?"
  • Not Synced
Like, what it you gave it to your therapist,
  • Not Synced
and they just said "let me know if you want it back,
  • Not Synced
and I'll put it in a bag in the waiting room,
  • Not Synced
and you can come get it.", then how would it feel?
  • Not Synced
And maybe you should, before giving it to a friend,
  • Not Synced
maybe we should just try not weighing ourselves
  • Not Synced
for one day, or one afternoon. It depends on
  • Not Synced
how often you weight yourself, and we'll start
  • Not Synced
    weaning off, you know?
  • Not Synced
So, those are my thoughts on that. Your therapist
  • Not Synced
is doing a great job, 'cause that's something I
  • Not Synced
    always encourage, you know,
  • Not Synced
some kind of version of that, okay?
  • Not Synced
Number three, someone wanted to know the process
  • Not Synced
of getting a diagnosis. Now, this probably differs
  • Not Synced
from Therapist to Therapist, but I'll just tell you mine.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to see you the first time, and I'm going to
  • Not Synced
ask you a lot of questions - about your history,
  • Not Synced
and where you've been before, and if there is
  • Not Synced
another Therapist I should talk to, and,
  • Not Synced
I'd get you to sign a release if that's the case.
  • Not Synced
I'd ask you about medical conditions, and things
  • Not Synced
you struggled with physically that you had to go to
  • Not Synced
the hospital for. I'd ask about medications, and
  • Not Synced
the list goes on, and on, and on.
  • Not Synced
And through the course of spending time with you
  • Not Synced
and having other sessions, I'll ask you about
  • Not Synced
your behaviors, like how many times
  • Not Synced
do you feel depressed? Or how many times do you
  • Not Synced
binge and purge? Or how many times do you
  • Not Synced
cut yourself in a day, or week, or month?
  • Not Synced
And I'll just start asking questions about that.
  • Not Synced
And, I probably see my clients four times - I'm just
  • Not Synced
giving you a rough estimate - unless there's some
  • Not Synced
reason we have to make a diagnosis quicker,
  • Not Synced
I usually see them for about a month,
  • Not Synced
before I feel confident enough to give them
  • Not Synced
a diagnosis. And then, I usually will jot in my notes
  • Not Synced
what I'm ruling out. Like, to rule out major depressive
  • Not Synced
disorder, or bulimia, or binging disorder
  • Not Synced
    - whatever it is I'm looking at -
  • Not Synced
borderline personality disorder. And then I'll start
  • Not Synced
weeding them out, so that it doesn't quite meet
  • Not Synced
criteria for this, it's more apt to meet that.
  • Not Synced
And so that's how I do it. So think of it
  • Not Synced
as a funnel - I'm taking all of this information
  • Not Synced
and I'm getting it down to what I think is actually
  • Not Synced
the struggle and the issue. But in the meantime,
  • Not Synced
I'm also creating a treatment plan based on
  • Not Synced
all those possibilities, so I like doing that
  • Not Synced
because it gives a more well rounded treatment plan,
  • Not Synced
so it's not just one thing that we're focusing on
  • Not Synced
    - even if it is one diagnosis, we have
  • Not Synced
a lot of stuff going on, you know?
  • Not Synced
So, that's just a little snippet about how that works.
  • Not Synced
    Okay, on to number four.
  • Not Synced
"What do you do, if someone threatens
  • Not Synced
to kill themselves, if you tell their parents?"
  • Not Synced
And I know that this comes from someone on Twitter,
