Click Your Fortune #2: Top interview question - Alessandro Centrone
-
0:01 - 0:05What's one interview question you ask every prospective employee?
-
0:05 - 0:09I like to see how people think.
-
0:09 - 0:11So, very often I ask questions
-
0:11 - 0:12that are inferential
-
0:12 - 0:15so they are not really looking into the knowledge
-
0:15 - 0:17because I know that someone may have done the research
-
0:17 - 0:19and someone may have not done the research.
-
0:19 - 0:22And although I can appreciate the enthusiasm
-
0:22 - 0:25and the desire that someone may show,
-
0:25 - 0:26so I evaluate that,
-
0:26 - 0:28I often ask questions that
-
0:28 - 0:30are questions like,
-
0:30 - 0:31"How many golf balls do you have
-
0:31 - 0:33in the United States?"
-
0:33 - 0:34And I am not looking for an answer
-
0:34 - 0:36that tells me the exact number,
-
0:36 - 0:38but I want to know how they think.
-
0:38 - 0:40And again, this goes to the idea
-
0:40 - 0:42that we are moving to a world
-
0:42 - 0:44where people don't care so much
-
0:44 - 0:45about the product in itself.
-
0:45 - 0:48Products are becoming more and more commodities.
-
0:48 - 0:50But people care about our ability
-
0:50 - 0:52to challenge their way of thinking.
-
0:52 - 0:55They enjoy the fact that we are bringing
-
0:55 - 0:57something to a conversation.
-
0:57 - 0:59So, you want at the end of a meeting
-
0:59 - 1:01with a C-level person
-
1:01 - 1:04who has given you a half an hour, one hour of their time,
-
1:04 - 1:06to make them feel like they didn't waste
-
1:06 - 1:07that hour with you,
-
1:07 - 1:10but I don't want to say that they learned something,
-
1:10 - 1:13but they saw things with a different perspective.
-
1:13 - 1:14So, I like young people
-
1:14 - 1:17who can really put these thoughts together
-
1:17 - 1:19and say, "Yes, I don't know the answer to that,
-
1:19 - 1:22but this is how I get to an answer."
-
1:22 - 1:24And I think very often that gives me a lot of ideas
-
1:24 - 1:27whether or not that person will be able to master
-
1:27 - 1:31some more sophisticated and complex thoughts and ideas
-
1:31 - 1:33that we will feed them,
-
1:33 - 1:35but they would be,
-
1:35 - 1:37they would need to be able to accept those ideas
-
1:37 - 1:40and then elaborate their own way of thinking
-
1:40 - 1:41around those ideas.
