A thousand times no
-
0:00 - 0:03Two years ago, I was invited as an artist
-
0:03 - 0:06to participate in an exhibition commemorating
-
0:06 - 0:09100 years of Islamic art in Europe.
-
0:09 - 0:11The curator had only one condition:
-
0:11 - 0:15I had to use the Arabic script for my artwork.
-
0:15 - 0:18Now, as an artist, a woman, an Arab,
-
0:18 - 0:22or a human being living in the world in 2010,
-
0:22 - 0:25I only had one thing to say:
-
0:25 - 0:27I wanted to say no.
-
0:27 - 0:30And in Arabic, to say "no," we say "no,
-
0:30 - 0:32and a thousand times no."
-
0:32 - 0:36So I decided to look for a thousand different noes.
-
0:36 - 0:38on everything ever produced
-
0:38 - 0:42under Islamic or Arab patronage in the past 1,400 years,
-
0:42 - 0:46from Spain to the borders of China.
-
0:46 - 0:48I collected my findings in a book,
-
0:48 - 0:52placed them chronologically, stating the name,
-
0:52 - 0:55the patron, the medium and the date.
-
0:55 - 0:58Now, the book sat on a small shelf next to the installation,
-
0:58 - 1:02which stood three by seven meters, in Munich, Germany,
-
1:02 - 1:05in September of 2010.
-
1:05 - 1:11Now, in January, 2011, the revolution started,
-
1:11 - 1:14and life stopped for 18 days,
-
1:14 - 1:16and on the 12th of February,
-
1:16 - 1:19we naively celebrated on the streets of Cairo,
-
1:19 - 1:23believing that the revolution had succeeded.
-
1:23 - 1:26Nine months later I found myself spraying messages
-
1:26 - 1:30in Tahrir Square. The reason for this act
-
1:30 - 1:34was this image that I saw in my newsfeed.
-
1:34 - 1:37I did not feel that I could live in a city
-
1:37 - 1:39where people were being killed
-
1:39 - 1:42and thrown like garbage on the street.
-
1:42 - 1:44So I took one "no" off a tombstone from
-
1:44 - 1:48the Islamic Museum in Cairo, and I added a message to it:
-
1:48 - 1:50"no to military rule."
-
1:50 - 1:53And I started spraying that on the streets in Cairo.
-
1:53 - 1:56But that led to a series of no, coming out of the book
-
1:56 - 1:59like ammunition, and adding messages to them,
-
1:59 - 2:01and I started spraying them on the walls.
-
2:01 - 2:04So I'll be sharing some of these noes with you.
-
2:04 - 2:06No to a new Pharaoh, because whoever comes next
-
2:06 - 2:10should understand that we will never be ruled by another dictator.
-
2:10 - 2:14No to violence: Ramy Essam came to Tahrir
-
2:14 - 2:16on the second day of the revolution,
-
2:16 - 2:20and he sat there with this guitar, singing.
-
2:20 - 2:24One month after Mubarak stepped down, this was his reward.
-
2:24 - 2:29No to blinding heroes. Ahmed Harara lost his right eye
-
2:29 - 2:31on the 28th of January,
-
2:31 - 2:34and he lost his left eye on the 19th of November,
-
2:34 - 2:38by two different snipers.
-
2:38 - 2:41No to killing, in this case no to killing men of religion,
-
2:41 - 2:44because Sheikh Ahmed Adina Refaat was shot
-
2:44 - 2:48on December 16th, during a demonstration,
-
2:48 - 2:51leaving behind three orphans and a widow.
-
2:51 - 2:55No to burning books. The Institute of Egypt was burned
-
2:55 - 2:59on December 17th, a huge cultural loss.
-
2:59 - 3:01No to stripping the people,
-
3:01 - 3:05and the blue bra is to remind us of our shame
-
3:05 - 3:09as a nation when we allow a veiled woman to be stripped
-
3:09 - 3:13and beaten on the street, and the footprint reads,
-
3:13 - 3:15"Long live a peaceful revolution,"
-
3:15 - 3:18because we will never retaliate with violence.
-
3:18 - 3:22No to barrier walls. On February 5th,
-
3:22 - 3:26concrete roadblocks were set up in Cairo
-
3:26 - 3:32to protect the Ministry of Defense from protesters.
-
3:32 - 3:34Now, speaking of walls, I want to share with you the story
-
3:34 - 3:37of one wall in Cairo.
-
3:37 - 3:41A group of artists decided to paint a life-size tank
-
3:41 - 3:43on a wall. It's one to one.
-
3:43 - 3:47In front of this tank there's a man on a bicycle
-
3:47 - 3:50with a breadbasket on his head. To any passerby,
-
3:50 - 3:53there's no problem with this visual.
-
3:53 - 3:57After acts of violence, another artist came,
-
3:57 - 4:01painted blood, protesters being run over by the tank,
-
4:01 - 4:04demonstrators, and a message that read,
-
4:04 - 4:08"Starting tomorrow, I wear the new face,
-
4:08 - 4:11the face of every martyr. I exist."
-
4:11 - 4:14Authority comes, paints the wall white,
-
4:14 - 4:17leaves the tank and adds a message:
-
4:17 - 4:22"Army and people, one hand. Egypt for Egyptians."
-
4:22 - 4:26Another artist comes, paints the head of the military
-
4:26 - 4:29as a monster eating a maiden in a river of blood
-
4:29 - 4:32in front of the tank.
-
4:32 - 4:36Authority comes, paints the wall white, leaves the tank,
-
4:36 - 4:38leaves the suit, and throws a bucket of black paint
-
4:38 - 4:40just to hide the face of the monster.
-
4:40 - 4:44So I come with my stencils, and I spray them on the suit,
-
4:44 - 4:46on the tank, and on the whole wall,
-
4:46 - 4:48and this is how it stands today
-
4:48 - 4:50until further notice. (Laughter)
-
4:50 - 4:54Now, I want to leave you with a final no.
-
4:54 - 4:58I found Neruda scribbled on a piece of paper
-
4:58 - 5:03in a field hospital in Tahrir, and I decided to take a no of
-
5:03 - 5:06Mamluk Mausoleum in Cairo.
-
5:06 - 5:07The message reads,
-
5:07 - 5:14[Arabic]
-
5:14 - 5:17"You can crush the flowers, but you can't delay spring."
-
5:17 - 5:21Thank you. (Applause)
-
5:21 - 5:30(Applause)
-
5:30 - 5:36Thank you. Shukran. (Applause)
