Patti Smith: Andy Warhol would have known how to depict 9/11
-
0:00 - 0:03I noticed that you wrote about Andy Warhol,
-
0:03 - 0:08saying you felt little for the can and didn't like the soup.
-
0:08 - 0:09(Laughter)
-
0:09 - 0:16That you preferred an artist not mirroring the world, but transforming it.
-
0:16 - 0:22Yes. Well, when I was young, I truthfully didn't have an affection for Andy Warhol.
-
0:22 - 0:29As a human being I thought that he was not a very generous or kind person,
-
0:29 - 0:33his work really didn't speak to me.
-
0:33 - 0:38Robert loved Andy Warhol though, and Robert believed he was a genius,
-
0:38 - 0:43and so I didn't dismiss him because I knew Robert knew things,
-
0:43 - 0:46you know I trusted in Robert's instinct.
-
0:46 - 0:52And, when I was young, his work didn't speak to me.
-
0:52 - 1:00At this time of my life, I've really gotten to appreciate what a genius he was.
-
1:00 - 1:07And, I find, if I'm in a museum, and looking at contemporary art,
-
1:07 - 1:13I'm not so drawn to contemporary art, and I suddenly see something across the room,
-
1:13 - 1:16and I think "That's strong", and I go over and it's Andy's.
-
1:16 - 1:22And the last works he did, or some of the last works he did before he died,
-
1:22 - 1:31his last supper, body of work, I thought was genius, was quite moving.
-
1:31 - 1:40But what I think is important in the quotation about an artist, either mirroring or transforming,
-
1:40 - 1:47I think what you do is transforming, instead of mirroring what you see,
-
1:47 - 1:50it's two different conceptions of how to be an artist.
-
1:50 - 1:57Well, I feel more drawn to the transformative in art itself.
-
1:57 - 2:06I'm not so drawn to non-fiction, but you know I also appreciate more and more
-
2:06 - 2:10someone that has the ability to mirror our times.
-
2:10 - 2:18I think that it's important that people do that, it's just I'm not really that style of person.
-
2:18 - 2:23I learned this lesson when 9/11 happened.
-
2:23 - 2:30Where I live in New-York City, I could see the towers from my stoop,
-
2:30 - 2:37and I watched them come down, and I didn't live far from there
-
2:37 - 2:43so I went and looked at the remains of one of the towers, the South Tower.
-
2:43 - 2:46And it was an extraordinary...
-
2:46 - 2:50it was like a piece of sculpture, it looked like the Tower of Babel.
-
2:50 - 2:55And I started thinking a lot about Andy, then.
-
2:55 - 3:02I really missed Andy as an artist then, because he would have known what to do
-
3:02 - 3:10as an artist, not to transform, but to document this extraordinary thing that happened.
-
3:10 - 3:14So, even though I'm not that style of artist,
-
3:14 - 3:19I recognized the importance of that type of artist.
-
3:19 - 3:23But when I was young, I was really judgmental.
-
3:23 - 3:25(Laughter)
-
3:25 - 3:27(Applause)
