Click Your Fortune #3: Advice for your 16-year-old self - Deena Gornick

  • 0:05 - 0:08
If I could meet me when I was 16,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
I think the first thing that I would say
  • 0:10 - 0:16
is that it is so tempting to do something
  • 0:16 - 0:18
for somebody to get them to like you.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Don't.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
Really be mindful that you are so wise right now
  • 0:24 - 0:27
because of all the things that you don't know.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    So just, really before somebody
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    asks you to do something,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
really take time to think about
  • 0:34 - 0:37
whether or not it's going to be good for you,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
that if, after you do it, you're going to go,
  • 0:39 - 0:40
"Oh, I'm so glad I did that!
  • 0:40 - 0:41
That was so good for me,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    that was so wonderful."
  • 0:43 - 0:46
You know, whether that's, whatever it is,
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    whether it's eating something,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    drinking something,
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    being with somebody,
  • 0:49 - 0:49
    taking a job,
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    whatever it is,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
just really check into the wisdom
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    that you already have
  • 0:55 - 0:58
to see how you're going to feel after you to do it.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    That's the first thing.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    And the second thing,
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    I think there's loads,
  • 1:02 - 1:06
but the second thing is jealousy.
  • 1:06 - 1:12
    Jealousy is a wonderful engine.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    When you have it,
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    really, really take it in
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    and ask yourself,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
"Ooh, I'm really jealous of so-and-so.
  • 1:22 - 1:23
What is it I'm jealous about?
  • 1:23 - 1:28
What is it that they have that I want?"
  • 1:28 - 1:31
And then trust that you already have it
  • 1:31 - 1:32
and act as if you do,
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    and if you don't,
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    if you really feel,
  • 1:34 - 1:38
"Ooh, I don't have that thing or that attribute,"
  • 1:38 - 1:43
then trust that somewhere you have some quality
  • 1:43 - 1:46
that resembles that and let it grow in you.
