A contributor to the betterment of Sudan: Hisham Elzubair -- at TEDxKhartoum
-
0:01 - 0:02Hi.
-
0:02 - 0:05My name is Hisham Elzubair.
-
0:05 - 0:07I'll give you a brief about myself.
-
0:07 - 0:08I lived in various countries like I said,
-
0:08 - 0:10and I moved to Sudan
about two years ago. -
0:10 - 0:12After about one year of being in Sudan
-
0:12 - 0:15I felt very frustrated seeing this country
so rich with so many things, -
0:15 - 0:17yet, things used to be standing still.
-
0:17 - 0:20So I thought, let me put my talents
and the talents of others, -
0:20 - 0:22and let's do something positive
for the country. -
0:22 - 0:26Keep your mind that finding people
is relatively easy. -
0:26 - 0:29We began the hunt looking
for media specialists, -
0:29 - 0:32and creators in the various fields.
-
0:33 - 0:36The process first began by a portion
of people I knew personally. -
0:36 - 0:38And they knew people,
who were also talented, -
0:38 - 0:40and utilizing social networks,
-
0:40 - 0:42we were able to locate
a lot more people, -
0:42 - 0:44and those people knew people
in their circles -
0:44 - 0:46were able to reffer them to us.
-
0:46 - 0:49About 80% of those people
who we approached, -
0:49 - 0:51joined the project on voluntary basis.
-
0:51 - 0:52They didn't join for the money,
-
0:52 - 0:55they joined for what the spirit
of the project is all about: -
0:55 - 0:56for the betterment of Sudan.
-
0:56 - 1:00That's the actual glue
that bonds all of us together. -
1:00 - 1:03Now, in terms of: Why does it work?
-
1:05 - 1:07Or, how does it work?
-
1:07 - 1:10There are number of systems
we impelment to help us to ensure this. -
1:10 - 1:12First, each with their own setup.
-
1:12 - 1:13We don't have capital,
we don't have money, -
1:13 - 1:14we don't have an office.
-
1:14 - 1:18So, everyone uses their own equipment
at home to produce the work. -
1:18 - 1:21We also utilize communication.
Communication is key: -
1:21 - 1:24phones, SMS, chats, e-mails,
-
1:24 - 1:27every form of communication
available as possible is used. -
1:27 - 1:30We also host specialized meetings,
-
1:30 - 1:32meetings for scenario guys,
meetings for the website guys, -
1:32 - 1:35meetings for the marketing guys
to get the work coordinated. -
1:36 - 1:38Most of the work is done in solitude,
-
1:38 - 1:41at one's home, and then they email
the other members -
1:41 - 1:44or relevant members of the project
that work has been done. -
1:44 - 1:46We also have a virtual office,
-
1:46 - 1:48we have shared calendars,
shared to-do lists, -
1:48 - 1:51shared files, shared contact sheets,
-
1:51 - 1:53so we are able to integrate
the work together. -
1:53 - 1:55We operate on total transparency,
-
1:55 - 1:57and we believe
that transparency itself is a vehicle -
1:57 - 2:00that enables this work to proceed further.
-
2:00 - 2:03We also operate on a shared goal
driven coordination system. -
2:03 - 2:08It's the goal of the whole project
that actually makes us work together. -
2:09 - 2:11Now, why [does] it work?
-
2:12 - 2:13A lot of people ask me this question.
-
2:13 - 2:16Well, like I said, the overall goal
the betterment of Sudan, -
2:16 - 2:20to improve Sudan's image,
is a goal that we share together. -
2:20 - 2:22So, it's something that moves
and drives us together. -
2:22 - 2:25It also provides an opportunity
to create a very high quality -
2:25 - 2:26in something we all aspire to.
-
2:26 - 2:28Sudan is very --
-
2:28 - 2:31you don't see this very often in Sudan,
so it's something that moves us. -
2:31 - 2:32It's an addition to one's CV.
-
2:32 - 2:35We believe the work we do
in Almawja is so valuable -
2:35 - 2:37that it can be a good addition
to one's CV. -
2:38 - 2:42It also provides opportunity for one
to work with complementary talents, -
2:42 - 2:47to produce a more complete
media product or unit. -
2:47 - 2:50It provides the opportunity for one
to start his own project, -
2:50 - 2:51or her own project,
-
2:51 - 2:53and we lend a hand and share
to make sure -
2:53 - 2:55that the project is realized,
supervised for project ownership. -
2:55 - 2:58Finally, revenue generation.
-
2:58 - 3:00Money is the least of the priorities,
-
3:00 - 3:02for money [goes] for marketing
-
3:02 - 3:04[and] exceptional costs before
we actually enjoy the fruits. -
3:04 - 3:07Now, we do suffer a lot of setbacks.
-
3:07 - 3:10This is natural, I guess.
-
3:10 - 3:12One of the setbacks we suffer
-
3:12 - 3:14is the priorities given to the actual jobs,
-
3:14 - 3:18so the amount of time allocated to Almawja
is significantly reduced. -
3:18 - 3:21That's something [that]
has a quite impact on us. -
3:21 - 3:23Also social obligations,
specially in Sudan, -
3:23 - 3:25I'm sure you guys are familiar,
-
3:25 - 3:29takes a quite a toll also on the time
allocate to Almawja. -
3:29 - 3:31Anther issue is general laziness,
-
3:31 - 3:34and time culture issues in Sudan,
-
3:34 - 3:37so the time allocated to Almawja
again is reduced further. -
3:37 - 3:38There are other issues
we experience, such as -
3:38 - 3:40lack of equipment.
-
3:40 - 3:41Again, we don't have a capital,
-
3:41 - 3:44so the equipment we have
is rather minimal. -
3:44 - 3:46We hope this will change in the future.
-
3:46 - 3:48Also hardware issues,
-
3:48 - 3:51for the hardware issue we can't solve it
as easy as corporation can. -
3:51 - 3:54So this is an issue
that sets us back quite a bit. -
3:54 - 3:55Finally, we learn as we go.
-
3:55 - 3:57So, sometimes we make mistakes,
-
3:57 - 3:59and we have to go back
and fix the mistakes. -
3:59 - 4:00This sets us back, but as well
-
4:00 - 4:04it gives us the strength
to move forward in a better fashion. -
4:04 - 4:07In terms of what we do as a group,
-
4:07 - 4:08we work on documentaries.
-
4:08 - 4:10One of them is the ancient
history of Sudan, -
4:10 - 4:13which we're very proud of,
just completed. -
4:13 - 4:16We're also working on 3D cartoon series,
-
4:16 - 4:18such as:
(Arabic) Yawmiyat Balad, -
4:18 - 4:20it's a cartoon that's in progress right now,
-
4:20 - 4:23should be released in about a year.
-
4:23 - 4:25We're also engaged in photo campaigns,
-
4:25 - 4:28where we collect various
artistic photos of Sudan, -
4:28 - 4:31by various photographers,
so we can show the world. -
4:31 - 4:34We're hoping to start
in training enthusiasts -
4:34 - 4:37in different various specialties
very soon -
4:37 - 4:40to provide more recruits.
-
4:41 - 4:43Other parts we're working on
include music video clips. -
4:43 - 4:44We're working on a video clip right now,
-
4:44 - 4:47for a Sudanese band,
a song that is really beautiful. -
4:47 - 4:50We're working on TV series,
that should be coming soon. -
4:50 - 4:53And we're also working on short films.
-
4:53 - 4:56We're soon to expand to creating movies,
-
4:56 - 4:58but we want to start slow and surely,
-
4:58 - 5:00we'll make sure that we do the right way,
-
5:00 - 5:02we don't move too fast.
-
5:02 - 5:04The shared principles that we have,
-
5:04 - 5:07are the cohesive glue
that binds us altogether. -
5:07 - 5:09One of the things is shifting perception,
-
5:09 - 5:12we want to shift the perception of Sudan
to a more positive and more real image -
5:12 - 5:14than what is out there
in the media right now. -
5:14 - 5:17We want to be a vehicle
of overall promotion of art and culture, -
5:17 - 5:20by promoting all talents
and creativity in the country -
5:20 - 5:23as something we all believe in.
-
5:23 - 5:26We want to create a platform for ourselves
and others to showcase our talents. -
5:28 - 5:31Sudan is full of talents.
I believe they need to be showcased. -
5:32 - 5:35We believe entertainment brings relief,
-
5:35 - 5:37and relief is an important component
for change to take place, -
5:37 - 5:39which we're really after.
-
5:39 - 5:42We are also [in] education,
particularly in terms of raising awareness, -
5:42 - 5:45we want to raise awareness
of what is negative around and about us, -
5:45 - 5:46as well as of what
we should be proud of -
5:46 - 5:48through our documentaries for instance.
-
5:48 - 5:50We would like to create a market.
-
5:50 - 5:52We believe that Sudan
has a lot of talents -
5:52 - 5:53that can provide all the country's
media needs, -
5:53 - 5:58at comparative pricing and a better quality
that worths outsource to. -
5:58 - 6:00We would like to expand,
we a have open board philosophy, -
6:00 - 6:02the more the merrier.
-
6:02 - 6:04And finally, we'd like to be an inspiration.
-
6:04 - 6:07We let this model to be used by others,
-
6:07 - 6:10where you can create something great,
out of absolutely nothing. -
6:10 - 6:11Thank you.
-
6:11 - 6:12(Applause)
