A contributor to the betterment of Sudan: Hisham Elzubair -- at TEDxKhartoum

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    Hi.
  • 0:02 - 0:05
    My name is Hisham Elzubair.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
I'll give you a brief about myself.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
I lived in various countries like I said,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    and I moved to Sudan
    about two years ago.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
After about one year of being in Sudan
  • 0:12 - 0:15
I felt very frustrated seeing this country
so rich with so many things,
  • 0:15 - 0:17
yet, things used to be standing still.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
So I thought, let me put my talents
    and the talents of others,
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    and let's do something positive
    for the country.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
Keep your mind that finding people
    is relatively easy.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    We began the hunt looking
    for media specialists,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
and creators in the various fields.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
The process first began by a portion
    of people I knew personally.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    And they knew people,
    who were also talented,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    and utilizing social networks,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    we were able to locate
    a lot more people,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    and those people knew people
    in their circles
  • 0:44 - 0:46
were able to reffer them to us.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    About 80% of those people
    who we approached,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
joined the project on voluntary basis.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
They didn't join for the money,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
they joined for what the spirit
of the project is all about:
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    for the betterment of Sudan.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    That's the actual glue
that bonds all of us together.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
Now, in terms of: Why does it work?
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    Or, how does it work?
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    There are number of systems
we impelment to help us to ensure this.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
First, each with their own setup.
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    We don't have capital,
    we don't have money,
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    we don't have an office.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
So, everyone uses their own equipment
at home to produce the work.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    We also utilize communication.
    Communication is key:
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    phones, SMS, chats, e-mails,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    every form of communication
    available as possible is used.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    We also host specialized meetings,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    meetings for scenario guys,
    meetings for the website guys,
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    meetings for the marketing guys
    to get the work coordinated.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
Most of the work is done in solitude,
  • 1:38 - 1:41
at one's home, and then they email
    the other members
  • 1:41 - 1:44
or relevant members of the project
    that work has been done.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
We also have a virtual office,
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    we have shared calendars,
    shared to-do lists,
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    shared files, shared contact sheets,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
so we are able to integrate
    the work together.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    We operate on total transparency,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    and we believe
that transparency itself is a vehicle
  • 1:57 - 2:00
that enables this work to proceed further.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
We also operate on a shared goal
    driven coordination system.
  • 2:03 - 2:08
It's the goal of the whole project
that actually makes us work together.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    Now, why [does] it work?
  • 2:12 - 2:13
A lot of people ask me this question.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
Well, like I said, the overall goal
    the betterment of Sudan,
  • 2:16 - 2:20
    to improve Sudan's image,
is a goal that we share together.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    So, it's something that moves
    and drives us together.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    It also provides an opportunity
to create a very high quality
  • 2:25 - 2:26
in something we all aspire to.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    Sudan is very --
  • 2:28 - 2:31
you don't see this very often in Sudan,
so it's something that moves us.
  • 2:31 - 2:32
It's an addition to one's CV.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
We believe the work we do
    in Almawja is so valuable
  • 2:35 - 2:37
that it can be a good addition
    to one's CV.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
It also provides opportunity for one
    to work with complementary talents,
  • 2:42 - 2:47
    to produce a more complete
    media product or unit.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
It provides the opportunity for one
    to start his own project,
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    or her own project,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
and we lend a hand and share
    to make sure
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    that the project is realized,
    supervised for project ownership.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    Finally, revenue generation.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
Money is the least of the priorities,
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    for money [goes] for marketing
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    [and] exceptional costs before
    we actually enjoy the fruits.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
Now, we do suffer a lot of setbacks.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    This is natural, I guess.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
One of the setbacks we suffer
  • 3:12 - 3:14
is the priorities given to the actual jobs,
  • 3:14 - 3:18
so the amount of time allocated to Almawja
    is significantly reduced.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    That's something [that]
has a quite impact on us.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    Also social obligations,
    specially in Sudan,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
I'm sure you guys are familiar,
  • 3:25 - 3:29
takes a quite a toll also on the time
    allocate to Almawja.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    Anther issue is general laziness,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
and time culture issues in Sudan,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
so the time allocated to Almawja
    again is reduced further.
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    There are other issues
    we experience, such as
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    lack of equipment.
  • 3:40 - 3:41
Again, we don't have a capital,
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    so the equipment we have
    is rather minimal.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
We hope this will change in the future.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    Also hardware issues,
  • 3:48 - 3:51
for the hardware issue we can't solve it
    as easy as corporation can.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    So this is an issue
that sets us back quite a bit.
  • 3:54 - 3:55
Finally, we learn as we go.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    So, sometimes we make mistakes,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
and we have to go back
    and fix the mistakes.
  • 3:59 - 4:00
This sets us back, but as well
  • 4:00 - 4:04
    it gives us the strength
to move forward in a better fashion.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
In terms of what we do as a group,
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    we work on documentaries.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
One of them is the ancient
    history of Sudan,
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    which we're very proud of,
    just completed.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
We're also working on 3D cartoon series,
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    such as:
    (Arabic) Yawmiyat Balad,
  • 4:18 - 4:20
it's a cartoon that's in progress right now,
  • 4:20 - 4:23
should be released in about a year.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
We're also engaged in photo campaigns,
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    where we collect various
    artistic photos of Sudan,
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    by various photographers,
so we can show the world.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    We're hoping to start
    in training enthusiasts
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    in different various specialties
    very soon
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    to provide more recruits.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    Other parts we're working on
    include music video clips.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
We're working on a video clip right now,
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    for a Sudanese band,
a song that is really beautiful.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    We're working on TV series,
    that should be coming soon.
  • 4:50 - 4:53
And we're also working on short films.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
We're soon to expand to creating movies,
  • 4:56 - 4:58
but we want to start slow and surely,
  • 4:58 - 5:00
we'll make sure that we do the right way,
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    we don't move too fast.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
The shared principles that we have,
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    are the cohesive glue
    that binds us altogether.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
One of the things is shifting perception,
  • 5:09 - 5:12
we want to shift the perception of Sudan
to a more positive and more real image
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    than what is out there
    in the media right now.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
We want to be a vehicle
of overall promotion of art and culture,
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    by promoting all talents
    and creativity in the country
  • 5:20 - 5:23
as something we all believe in.
  • 5:23 - 5:26
We want to create a platform for ourselves
and others to showcase our talents.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    Sudan is full of talents.
I believe they need to be showcased.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    We believe entertainment brings relief,
  • 5:35 - 5:37
and relief is an important component
    for change to take place,
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    which we're really after.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    We are also [in] education,
particularly in terms of raising awareness,
  • 5:42 - 5:45
    we want to raise awareness
of what is negative around and about us,
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    as well as of what
    we should be proud of
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    through our documentaries for instance.
  • 5:48 - 5:50
We would like to create a market.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    We believe that Sudan
    has a lot of talents
  • 5:52 - 5:53
that can provide all the country's
    media needs,
  • 5:53 - 5:58
at comparative pricing and a better quality
    that worths outsource to.
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    We would like to expand,
we a have open board philosophy,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    the more the merrier.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
And finally, we'd like to be an inspiration.
  • 6:04 - 6:07
We let this model to be used by others,
  • 6:07 - 6:10
where you can create something great,
    out of absolutely nothing.
  • 6:10 - 6:11
    Thank you.
  • 6:11 - 6:12
    (Applause)
