Social Bookmarking: Making the Web Work for You

  • Not Synced
    What is this talking about?
  • Not Synced
How social can a bookmark be?
  • Not Synced
Well, we all know what bookmarks are
  • Not Synced
so let's think about them first
  • Not Synced
and go back to the social part later
  • Not Synced
bookmarks are things you stick in books to mark your place
  • Not Synced
sometimes they are designed for that purpose
  • Not Synced
    sometimes they aren't
  • Not Synced
but how do you mark your place
  • Not Synced
when you are reading on line?
  • Not Synced
the easiest way to bookmark a website
  • Not Synced
is to save it to your favourites folder
  • Not Synced
    in your internet browser,
  • Not Synced
but how many sites can you keep track of
  • Not Synced
    that way
  • Not Synced
if you start getting folders to organise your favourites
  • Not Synced
you may still loose track of things
  • Not Synced
    when they get too full
  • Not Synced
or you can't remember where you put them
  • Not Synced
pretty soon you still have an endless list
  • Not Synced
    piling up, overwhelming your structure
  • Not Synced
so let's take a step back from websites
  • Not Synced
    and think about reading books
  • Not Synced
    do you have a strategy
  • Not Synced
that helps you focus and remember
  • Not Synced
    as you read a book
  • Not Synced
    do you use a highlighter,
  • Not Synced
    a post-it?
  • Not Synced
do you write notes in the margins?
  • Not Synced
    or make flashcards?
  • Not Synced
    for many people, it's easier
  • Not Synced
    to read and remember things
  • Not Synced
if you can interact with the text in some way
  • Not Synced
Using Diigo, you can actually use these techniques
  • Not Synced
    as you read the web
  • Not Synced
Diigo is a social bookmarking tool
  • Not Synced
    that works on most websites,
  • Not Synced
but it doesn't require that you change the programs
  • Not Synced
that you use to access the Internet
  • Not Synced
all you need to do is install a toolbar into the browser you're already using.
  • Not Synced
The toolbar will add buttons at the top of your screen
  • Not Synced
that make it easier to read, organize
  • Not Synced
and share the websites you look at.
  • Not Synced
    Let me show you how.
  • Not Synced
How does Diigo make it easier to read the internet?
  • Not Synced
Well, when you have the Diigo toolbar installed,
  • Not Synced
you can use tools like a highlighter or post-it comments on top of the web.
  • Not Synced
It's easy to send notes to yourself (?1:36)
  • Not Synced
So when you come back again, you can see exactly what you were looking at before.
  • Not Synced
How does it make it easier to organize?
  • Not Synced
Instead of saving a link to a folder, you can save it to a list,
  • Not Synced
then add some search words called tags.
  • Not Synced
They will help you find it later.
  • Not Synced
Saving our bookmarks with Diigo saves it to your favorites and to your account online.
  • Not Synced
So you can find your bookmarks any time you're on the internet.
  • Not Synced
How does Diigo help you share information?
  • Not Synced
Well, if you take a moment to upload your contacts to Diigo,
  • Not Synced
you'll automatically be able to e-mail anyone
  • Not Synced
    without opening any other programs.
  • Not Synced
All you do is click on "Send", type in their name,
  • Not Synced
adjust the e-mail as you want, and off it goes.
  • Not Synced
You can even attach the comments and quotes that you've highlighted.
  • Not Synced
    "OK, this looks simple enough.
  • Not Synced
"I'd like to start organizing, sharing and reading information this way.
  • Not Synced
"What do I have to do to get started?"
  • Not Synced
To start using Diigo, you need to go to their website www.diigo.com to create a login.
  • Not Synced
If you like the idea of sharing your bookmarks on the web,
  • Not Synced
using your real name will make it easier for people to find your bookmarks.
  • Not Synced
If you aren't sure how much information you want to share,
  • Not Synced
using a pseudonym will make it easier for you to stay anonymous.
  • Not Synced
We'll explain about the privacy settings in just a moment.
  • Not Synced
When your login is added, they will send you an e-mail back
  • Not Synced
to confirm that they have the right information.
  • Not Synced
Then you can click on that link and come back to install the toolbar.
  • Not Synced
If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox or Flock as your internet browser,
  • Not Synced
you can install the full Diigo toolbar.
  • Not Synced
If you aren't allowed to install toolbars on your computer,
  • Not Synced
    or using a different browser,
  • Not Synced
they have an alternative: a mini-toolbar gadget you can use instead, called Diigolet.
  • Not Synced
If you want to find these again later,
  • Not Synced
after you sign into the website using the login you've just created,
  • Not Synced
you can find the Tools menu under your name on the top right of the Diigo website. (3:21)
  • Not Synced
I would encourage you to take your time at this last step of the set up
  • Not Synced
    adding profile
  • Not Synced
Some social websites require that everyone sign (3.28)
